Feltedholidaygarland

I love it when a plan comes together.

Holidayfeltgarland

This project is totally inspired by the Anthropologie felted bows garland. I LOVE how simple and fun it is and decided to make my own in traditional red and green.

Garlandsupplies

I selected felt in five colors (I like the stuff with some wool content because the colors and texture is better) and bought 1/4 yard of each. Then I just cut my felt into strips that were about 3/4 inches wide (and 1/4 yard long). Freehanding is key here. No measuring allowed.

I used hemp rope for the base because I had it sitting in the garage. The finished garland is tied tight enough that you can't see what material is used, but something thicker than normal string might be easier to work with. And then I just knotted each piece of felt once until my garland was complete. (This is one of those projects that looks bad at first but comes together nicely.)

If you were going to hang this garland, you could totally leave an extra bit of string on the ends, but I want to use it as a centerpiece on my dining table, so I ran the felt all the way to the edge. To accomplish this, I tied one knot about four inches from the end and then folded the extra rope back and wrapped my knots around both pieces. It's secure and the left over string doesn't show.

Simple enough, but looks pretty cool right? I ended up using almost all of my felt and my garland is 82 inches long. Check back tomorrow for another (simple!) holiday project. I'm on a roll.

Cute! Looks great on your table-an alternative to candles and fake evergreens that I love. Thank you for the inspiration-I may give this a go myself! Quick question-did you use 100% polyester felt or a wool blend? Thanks!

this is cute! i’d imagine you could do this with fabric instead of felt? although it probably wouldn’t keep it’s shape very well.
i worked on some diy ornaments that reminded me of your five minute crafts. http://wp.me/p3H1z3-5m

Where did you purchase the wool blend felt? My local store only carries white, grey and beige with wool in it. Thanks for your help–the garland turned out great!

Now this is a craft I can handle! We do Christmas Craft week the week that my kids get out of school. We do a craft a day after school. This would be be perfect for my kids to work on and then we keep it as a decoration. Thanks for the inspiration!

Love it! It reminds me of your fabric autumn wreath. I made holiday versions of that for Christmas presents last year. 🙂

Wow…I decided this week to do a “felt” theme for Christmas. I don’t like glitzy decorations much so I’ve been searching for more natural feeling items to use as decorations. This is perfect! I’m coordinating a baby shower this weekend and will be using lots of felt cutouts as part of the decorations. Michaels actually had a lof of quality felt decor that I picked up for both the shower and my house. Thanks for the instructions!

Just made one, thanks for the directions! It looks great draped over the back of my gray couch. A little way to perk up the not-so-decorated TV room! Thanks!

I found your felt garland/ table runner so inspirational that I ended up making my own version of it, with some different colors. I blogged about it today (giving you full credit of course 🙂 I also posted my project on the Studio Calico blog (again giving you credit.) I hope that was okay. I am so glad you are on the SC team…so great to see you popping in there.
Here is the link to my runner if you are curious…
