Bookreport

It's finally time. I have gotten enough books read this season that I am able to share the best of them here.

Wild by Cheryl Strayed – this one I saw getting mentioned over and over on the blogs and IG (do you notice books tend to do that? Like Night Circus and Gone Girl? And of course Bossypants.). It took me awhile to get in to, but once I was in, I was so in. For me, it's hard to not draw the comparison between this book and Eat, Pray, Love (which I tremendously enjoyed my first year out of college). Both are told by women who experienced loss and heartbreak, decided to ambitiously travel and met crazy characters along the way. This was gritty at some times and sweet at others and honestly funny. I laughed at the author's ability to laugh at herself. And this book really, really, really made me want to go hiking.

Still Life by Louise Penny – an enjoyable fiction mystery. Sometimes, I forget that I really love mystery books. I think this got added to my queue because the author recently published another and it's on the bestseller list (therefore there is a long wait) and so I decided to read something else from her. The characters were fun and the story was well organized. I didn't know "whodunit" until it was revealed, and it made sense when it was. I'll probably read a few more of these from her (it seems they all feature the same detective).

Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver – sometimes you read the right book at the right time and everything clicks. This was that book for me. I loved it. It's on my top five chart of books, I think (though just thinking about having to pick a top five list makes me anxious). I'm a big Kingsolver fan (not from high school when we had to read Pigs in Heaven but from last year when I read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle). I like how she weaves her real life with her fiction (although presumably many authors do this, I just don't read their fiction and their memoirs). It's told from the point of view of three characters in the same small farm town and the way their stories were interwoven was creative and (for me) unexpected. I don't know, it took me a bit to get into it, but I just loved this book. I was sad when it ended.

I Feel Bad about My Neck by Nora Ephron – I've been hearing good things about this short (very short – I devoured it in an evening) memoir. Then I saw it on this list of laugh out loud books and had to add it to my library queue. It was so good. Easy to read (again – devoured in a night) and lighthearted, but also incredibly smart. I didn't actually emit laughter out loud. But my face broke into a grin at least six times. I made Paul listen to paragraphs at least twice. Every chapter was on point but her thoughts on parenting and reading really nailed it for me. My favorite quote relates to reading a great book… "Days pass as I savor every word. Each minute I spend away from the book pretending to be interested in everyday life is a misery."

I'm currently reading Pilgrims, short stories by Elizabeth Gilbert and then I think next for me is The Woman in White, recommended by Nora herself and a free download for the kindle or kindle app. For past book reports from me check here, here, and here.

What's on your nightstand? I would love to hear. (And be sure to check back on this post, the comments section is always full of outstanding book recommendations.)

*links throughout are affiliate, though I highly recommend checking these out at your local library. I am the biggest library convert there ever was.

Right now I am reading Inferno by Dan Brown, and I am liking it. Some other good ones I’ve read lately are: The Spymistress by Jennifer Chiaverini (historical fiction), Me Before You by Jojo Moyes, Defending Jacob by William Landy.

I’m in the midst of Elizabeth Gilbert’s newest work of fiction Signature of All Things. It’s a fantastic read, and I’ve only just begun. I also loved Where’d You Go Bernadette, Orange is the New Black, The Book Thief and Dad is Fat. The latter is a quick hilarious read about parenthood.

I am reading Elizabeth Gilbert’s new book, The Signature of All Things. It is a departure from her normal style. I am enjoying it! (Also checked it out from the library).
The last book I finished was WILD! I liked it a lot, too. Can’t wait to see the movie with Reese Witherspoon starring.

I second the recommendation for Jojo Moyes book Me Before You. I started it one evening & seriously couldn’t put it down. I was exhausted the next day but it was a great story.
I also just finished The Art of Hearing Heartbeats. It was a very enjoyable read.

Prodigal Summer is also on my top something list (I could never actually write this list down LOL).
I just finished devouring Dark Witch by Nora Roberts. They are such simple reads and very formulaic but I have to read every one she writes. And I cry every time 🙂
Next up, I’m not sure. Book 2 in the Mortal Instruments series? Finish Echo in the Bone (Diana Gabaldon)? Orange is the New Black? All of these and a dozen more are in the wings waiting.

I’m slowly making my way through reading Cold Tangerines by Shauna Niequist, along with a few pregnancy books. The last book I finished was Where’d You Go Bernadette and I LOVED it. I tried listening to Wild on audiobook last year, and just had such a hard time getting into it that I quit. I may try again. Or not.
I recently bought Invisible Girls and Love Does for my Kindle app, so if I get bored before this baby gets here (ha!), maybe I’ll start one of those. I’d like to buy Jesus Feminist, too- that sounds like an excelllent read.

A total guilty pleasure (I held out for long enough) and I am reading Fifty Shades of Grey. I tried not to read it but if it’s good enough to be made into a movie than I will read it.
Next up: Re-reading Night by Elie Wiesel-absolutely loved this heartbreaking book and I feel the need to re-read it now.
    On my list:
    1. Help, Thanks, Wow by Anne Lamott
    2. The Book Thief
    3. Blood Bones and Butter by Gabrielle Hamilton
    4. Salvage The Bones by J. Ward
    5. Coming Clean by Kimberly Rae Miller

I’ll give two thumbs up to these two that were already mentioned: My Life in France and Where’d You Go Bernadette (LOVED this one!).
If you like historical fiction, I’ve recently enjoyed The House I Loved by Tatiana de Rosnay and Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker by Jennifer Chiaverini.
I also just read Bitter is the New Black. It was my first Jen Lancaster book, and I loved it. Can’t wait to read more of hers!

Hm… books I’ve read so far this year include… Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell (young adult, but very good); I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella (always a fun read!); The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman (rather strange, but very good); The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky; The Fault in Our Stars by John Green (prepare to cry…). I’m currently reading Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton and listening to And The Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini, both of which are very good.
    Happy reading! 🙂

Cold Tangerines or Bread and Wine by Shauna Niequest… I love her writing.
The Light Between Oceans was a very great story… one that makes you question what you would do if you were in that situation. Excellent Read.
The Shoemakers Wife is a great romantic story, but not a “romance novel.”
And the one book I always recommend, One Day by David Nicholls. The movie was horrrrrible but the book is so good. Much like Time Traveler’s Wife, I think about the characters to this day.

I read Wild over the summer and liked it but didn’t love it. If you haven’t read Strayed’s essay “The Love of My Life,” you should drop everything and do it now. It’s heartbreaking and gorgeous: http://thesunmagazine.org/archives/2192
I just finished The Round House by Louise Erdich and that was really great. Just moved on to We Are Water by Wally Lamb. I’ve loved him in the past, but this one’s not really doing much for me yet. I’m also reading Handling the Truth by Beth Kephart–it’s about writing memoir and I think you’d really enjoy it.

Prodigal Summer is one of my favorites, too. I love her book of essays called High Tide in Tuscan. Also, I just finished writing an annotation on Eprhon’s I Remember Nothing for grad school. I LOVED this book and thought it was better then I Feel Bad About My Neck (though, I liked that one a lot).
One book one creativity and motherhood that I read just about every year is Rumor of Water by L.L.Barkat. Lovely, lovely stuff. The spine of that book is so bend and creased that every time I open it I worry pages will fall out. 🙂 Just love your blog, Elise! I look forward to your posts everyday!

On my nightstand right now is Vampires in the Lemon Grove, a collection of short stories by Karen Russell. I’ve never read short stories before but I’m really enjoying these. Some of the stories are a bit creepy! Needless to say, I’ve whizzed through each story quickly and have been sad to see most of them end.
I’m also slowly working my way through Buddhism for Mothers by Sarah Napthali. It’s been a slow read for me, but thoughtfully so. It gives me a lot to think about as a mom to a toddler.

Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver is also REALLY good. Takes place on farm (presumably near/like her actual farm in Animal, Vegetable, Miracle). Highly recommended.
Also, just read Night Circus and loved it.
Also just loved Code Name Verity – about a female WWII pilot/spy. Kind of Young Adult-level prose, but really good.

I’ve just realised after reading this that I do have a top 5 list of books. It would be, The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber, Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts, Spies by Micheal Frayn, The whole of The Cousin’s War series by Philappa Gregory and Atonement by Ian McEwan. Oh maybe it’s a top 6 list because the one I’m reading now, Two Brothers by Ben Elton is certainly up there at the top.

I liked Wild too. As someone who works at a library, I am really happy to hear you giving some love to libraries! Some of my favorite books this year have been:
The Round House (Louise Erdrich), Fairyland (a memoir about a girl and her gay father growing up in San Francisco during the height of the AIDS crisis), A House in the Sky (memoir about a Canadian journalist who is abducted in Somalia), Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead (surprisingly interesting and quick/easy read by the CEO of Facebook), Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls (David Sedaris is always laugh out loud funny). I also enjoyed two books about French parenting styles by Americans: Bringing up Bebe and French Kids Eat Everything. Cheers!

‘Wild’ is already on my Amazon wishlist waiting for Christmas. 🙂
Books I’ve read recently that I loved:
‘The Orphan Masters Son’ – Too a while to get into, then I loved it. One of those rare books that you eventually put down and go “well, that was amazing”.
‘Mutiny On The Bounty’ by John Boyne, the same chap who wrote Schindler’s List. Written from the perspective of the captain’s 14 year old servant. I loved it.
One I read last summer, that has stuck with me, was ‘Memoir Of An Imaginary Friend’. Such a clever, sweetly funny book.
‘Hyperbole And A Half’ is on my wishlist also! I’ve followed her blog for years and love it. I’m sad she doesn’t update more often.

I have read Winter Solstice more than once and am on my 2nd time with Coming Home. She is very similar to Maeve Binchy. Winter Solstice especially is told from the POV of various characters that eventually all end up coming together in odd ways for the Winter Solstice. I LOVE that book! Coming Home follows one girl Judith, to womanhood, in England in the days leading up to, and then thru, WW2.

I recently saw David Sedaris live, and the way he read his essays made me want to listen to his books instead of regular-read them. So, I bought my first audiobook! I’ve been listening to it in the car, and since Let’s Explore Diabetes With Owls is a collection of nonfiction essays about his life that he reads himself, it’s easy to listen to one at a time, and not feel like I’m missing plot points. In fact, it’s a lot like listening to podcasts or NPR. He’s poignant, hilarious, and real. Can’t wait to read more of his stuff
