Bookreport

It's finally time. I have gotten enough books read this season that I am able to share the best of them here.

Wild by Cheryl Strayed – this one I saw getting mentioned over and over on the blogs and IG (do you notice books tend to do that? Like Night Circus and Gone Girl? And of course Bossypants.). It took me awhile to get in to, but once I was in, I was so in. For me, it's hard to not draw the comparison between this book and Eat, Pray, Love (which I tremendously enjoyed my first year out of college). Both are told by women who experienced loss and heartbreak, decided to ambitiously travel and met crazy characters along the way. This was gritty at some times and sweet at others and honestly funny. I laughed at the author's ability to laugh at herself. And this book really, really, really made me want to go hiking.

Still Life by Louise Penny – an enjoyable fiction mystery. Sometimes, I forget that I really love mystery books. I think this got added to my queue because the author recently published another and it's on the bestseller list (therefore there is a long wait) and so I decided to read something else from her. The characters were fun and the story was well organized. I didn't know "whodunit" until it was revealed, and it made sense when it was. I'll probably read a few more of these from her (it seems they all feature the same detective).

Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver – sometimes you read the right book at the right time and everything clicks. This was that book for me. I loved it. It's on my top five chart of books, I think (though just thinking about having to pick a top five list makes me anxious). I'm a big Kingsolver fan (not from high school when we had to read Pigs in Heaven but from last year when I read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle). I like how she weaves her real life with her fiction (although presumably many authors do this, I just don't read their fiction and their memoirs). It's told from the point of view of three characters in the same small farm town and the way their stories were interwoven was creative and (for me) unexpected. I don't know, it took me a bit to get into it, but I just loved this book. I was sad when it ended.

I Feel Bad about My Neck by Nora Ephron – I've been hearing good things about this short (very short – I devoured it in an evening) memoir. Then I saw it on this list of laugh out loud books and had to add it to my library queue. It was so good. Easy to read (again – devoured in a night) and lighthearted, but also incredibly smart. I didn't actually emit laughter out loud. But my face broke into a grin at least six times. I made Paul listen to paragraphs at least twice. Every chapter was on point but her thoughts on parenting and reading really nailed it for me. My favorite quote relates to reading a great book… "Days pass as I savor every word. Each minute I spend away from the book pretending to be interested in everyday life is a misery."

I'm currently reading Pilgrims, short stories by Elizabeth Gilbert and then I think next for me is The Woman in White, recommended by Nora herself and a free download for the kindle or kindle app. For past book reports from me check here, here, and here.

What's on your nightstand? I would love to hear. (And be sure to check back on this post, the comments section is always full of outstanding book recommendations.)

*links throughout are affiliate, though I highly recommend checking these out at your local library. I am the biggest library convert there ever was.

I love this blog and i’ve been reading it for over a year but this is the first time I’m leaving a comment so here we go:
    – just read “room” and kinda love it, even knowing it was a little dark and sad! Just plain good writing!
    – finishing a novel by a new author (Exception by Patty Maximini) and it is totally in the opposite direction, romantic, light but also very dreamy and soulful! Highly reccomend it!

Oh Elise, you’re not alone. I love libraries! When I was a small kid I dreamed about going to school so I could go to the library everyday. It’s just sad that there aren’t really good libraries here in Brasilia, Brazil. I’m jealous of you every time you post pictures of the books you got at the library. For example, the best library here has only two books of Alice Munro!
I’d love to be a librarian, but my love for numbers is greater, so next year I’ll be a statistician.

Another vote for Orphan Train, anything by Barbara Kingsolver, and my all time favorite book, The People of the Book. Thanks for all the suggestions. I’m a bibliophile since childhood.

    Depends on the book.
I was reading Prodigal Summer and Wild for weeks. But the Penny novel I raced through in a few days. I have the kindle app on my iPad and love it, but since discovering the library, I am TOTALLY back on real books.

Ooh, good list- loved Wild so much made my hubby take me to the PCT while we were in Tahoe just to say I walked a mile on it. If you like mysteries I have to recommend Lawrence Block. He has several series, my fave are the Bernie Rhodenbarr ‘burglar’ ones. His memoir Step by Step I think you would enjoy also as it’s about his running and racewalking marathons.

The two best books I read this year were: John Green: “The Fault in Our Stars” and Elizabeth Gilbert: “The Signature of All Things”. I just realized that in both books, an important part of the story takes place here in the Netherlands – what a coincidence!

Elise, you need to read the author of the Little Prince. The author has amazing books. He was a very sensitive person and spent it in his words. My recommendation is the Land of Men (not sure if this title is in English), it is in Portuguese Terra dos Homens.

I just finished reading all of Khaled Hosseini’s books (Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns, & And the Mountains Echoed). They were absolutely amazing, left me in tears, and I was so sad to finish each one of them. I highly recommend him if you haven’t read any of his books. His ability to capture human relationships is just lovely. Also, are you on Goodreads? It’s a great way to track your have-reads, future reads, and current reads. I know we would all love to follow you! Also, at least for me, it feels really satisfying to update when you’ve finished your book. 🙂

I too enjoyed Where’d You Go Benadette! A couple other ones to add: The Cuckoo’s Calling (the one J.K. Rowling secretly wrote) was a really fun mystery. I haven’t read Wild, but another good hiking adventure story is Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson – it’s pretty hilarious at times. Finally, I might recommend Gaining Ground by Forrest Pritchard – it’s written by a Virginian farmer who graduated college and decided he wanted to re-start his family farm raising organic, grass-fed beef. It was fun to read after reading Animal, Vegetable, Mineral.

I’m currently working my way through A Dance with Dragons (Song of Fire and Ice Book 5). I started reading the series at the beginning of the summer and I flew through the first three. I have trudged through book 4 and have just started book 5. I’m hoping my mom is getting me the DVD set of the TV show for Christmas, and I wanted to read it before seeing it!
The books I have waiting on me when I finish Dragons are:
    1) Allegiant by Veronica Roth
    2) Inferno by Dan Brown
    3) A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
I love seeing what you are reading. I second the GoodReads recommendation! I wouldn’t mind browsing your virtual bookshelves!

I liked Still Life enough to read the next two in the series. Also a fan of the “Bones series”. Lust got back from a trip where I read a mixture of non-fiction, mystery and teen. Love that opportunity. Finally read The Book Thief. Looking forward to see how the movie turns out.

I highly recommend “When Nietzsche wept” by Irvin D. Yalom. It’s a touching novel (fiction) about the beginnings of psychoanalysis and friendship. Besides the entertaining and funny parts you can learn a lot about the way our mind/soul is working 😉
If you want to read a love story you have to read “Virtual Love” by Daniel Glattauer. It starts with a wrongly delivered Email getting two people in touch. The whole book consists of Emails, no writing besides that. And usually I’m not too much going for love stories. In German it was fabulous!
