Queen-Bee-Market-November-2013-PROOFS-0127

Last weekend I participated in the Queen Bee Market. This was my third time as a vendor and my favorite experience so far. The event was packed both days from open to close and people seemed to be buying – not just looking – which is so awesome to see. (Hooray, handmade!)

I love the creative aspect of making and selling but I also equally enjoy the business side. Business is my background and watching people shop is fascinating to me. I love to see the trends (ampersands were everywhere) and what seems to fly off the shelves (this market it was big painted wooden signs and marquee lighting).

I spend a lot of time thinking about my business when surrounded by so many other small businesses. I think about what I can change. I think about what needs to stay the same. I think about where I want to take my shop and how I can simplify to make things better. It's inspiring to see handmade thriving.

And of course, it's also fun to be able to meet blog readers in real life and connect with other vendors. It was clear to me that Instagram is taking over though – I overheard "What's your Instagram name?" or "I follow you on Instagram" way more than I heard "Do you have a blog?" or "I read your blog." It's interesting to realize that one photo on Instagram may be a much better marketing tool than a long explanatory blog post. And it's also so clear that very soon having a mobile-ready shop will be absolutely necessary to do business.

Seriously… so much to think about when I ask myself the question "What's next?!" I never dreamed my pop-up stamp shop would grow into what it has (nearly 5,000 stamps sold!). I never imagined my random posts would develop into a career. I am so happy and grateful to be working on my craft daily.

I love seeing your set up 🙂
I’d be curious to know if, from your experiences, going to craft shows, etc, is “worth” it, compared to an online store… but obviously you’ve been successful, if you went back for your third! 🙂 I’ve found that the things that are popular online haven’t been popular at the shows I’ve been to… but that might just be my area.
Also–is that a Kal script stamp I see peaking out there?!?

    Hey Elise,
I’m doing a craft show this weekend and am having a hard time coming up with what I want to cover my table with. What did you use for yours?

And we understand and feel your love for what you are doing and that is why we stalk you. I may never macrame again, but I READ you post on it. I always get something from a blog post. (and on a side note, I LOVE how calm and casual you are when receiving unsolicited advice on instagram 🙂

I tend to do much better online… large items (that are too heavy to ship) do really well at the craft fairs I go to. But it’s so great to get out and meet people. 🙂
I am not sure which stamp you mean, but no…All of my stamps fonts are computer generated. 🙂

Congrats on another craft show! I follow your blog everyday, you have such a positive and energetic presence! I am not on instagram either. I wanted to ask if you plan to do a pros / cons post on doing a craft show?

hey April, thanks! Probably not a pros and cons list. The biggest thing I have noticed is that a craft fair is PERFECT if you have big items that are hard to ship. 🙂 Smaller stuff (like my products) are much easier to sell online to a larger market.
I still love getting out there though and will probably continue to do one market a year.

I read two blogs pretty much daily…your’s and Ali’s. Instagram has taken over all of my other blog reading. Randomly I will jump a link to a blog from their feed but rarely. Exciting to see where things go.
