I'm coming to the end of my "official" maternity leave. I am blessed that a big part of my day job is blogging. It's the only thing I consistently do week after week and the piece of my "freelance income pie" that takes up the most time. Every dollar I have made in the past 3+ years has been directly or indirectly related to this space.

But long before there was in any money in this blog, I loved to write here. This text box has become my friend, my sounding-board and occasionally my super inexpensive therapist. I have found my voice in this Internet corner and have learned a lot about myself just by typing (and re-typing) nearly everyday for over seven years.

I already knew I needed this outlet, but it was made even clearer when I got home from the hospital after Ellerie was born. Everything was hard those first few days and weeks. Showering was hard. Getting into and out of bed was hard. Sitting on the couch was hard. But writing was easy. I wanted to blog. I needed to blog. I was desperate for both the escape and clarity that came from stringing my thoughts together and hitting publish. I realized those first few weeks how important this space was to me on a personal level. It was awesome to see how much I needed to write.

And so, because of this, I know I'll keep writing here forever.

Since I started this blog, my story has changed many times. I have been single and living in a sorority house with my best friends. I have been a college student struggling to figure out how passion and a career path could fit together. I have been a girlfriend moving across the country to live with a boy. I have been a college graduate commuting two hours a day to work at a paper store for very little money. I have been a new entrepreneur starting an etsy shop. I have been newly engaged and planning a wedding. I have been a newlywed gleefully decorating an apartment. I have been a small business owner quitting my day job to make money doing what I loved. I have been a military spouse living alone while my husband was deployed. I have been pregnant and preparing for a baby. I have been a new homeowner feathering a nest.

And now, in addition to all of those other women, I am a mom. Over the years, I have thought a lot about how this space would be affected once I had kids. Recently I realized it would move foward the same way it always does – organically and with me. In seven years, the content and "theme" of this blog has changed many times, but, for me, it continues to work because it always feels real. I can't sleep when this blog looses it's authenticity and with a newborn, I don't need anything else keeping me up at night.

So instead of over-thinking it (she says, 500 words later), I'm going to just keep writing. About what interests me. About the things we do. The food we cook. The projects I take on. The thoughts I have. The goals I set. The mistakes I make. The people I love.

This space is where I share my story and I am so looking forward to getting back into the swing of near daily writing again. Thank you for reading.

p.s. as I start to prepare a loose editioral calendar for this fall, I welcome your suggestions! Is there anything you would like to read from me? Please feel free to share in the comments section.

Elise, I’m glad, you still want to blog. I’m really looking forward to your daily – or nearly daily – posts. Reading your blog was always the first thing on my way back home after a day of work. (I’m from Switzerland, so your posts are up at 2 pm in my time zone.)
I would be interested in a post about how you organize your ideas and notes. I keep a notebook where I write down ideas and inspiration. Whenever I see something in a magazine or read something somewhere that could be used as an inspiration for a future project, I write it in my notebook. For example a good quote, a picture of a plant, some layout inspiration for project life, or a photo of a scarf I eventually want to knit…. But the problem is, my notebook is not organized and so some ideas get lost. Or when I don’t have something to write in on hand, I make a note in my phone, but a few days later, I forgot about that. How do you save your ideas/inspiration? Do you use a notebook? Or is everything on your phone/computer? I’m curious how you keep track about all these inspiration for future projects.
Your posts “I want to remember…” were also one of my highlights. I would love to see some of these again. And I’m glad your “around here” posts will be up again? 🙂
Oh and I almost forgot. Your videos were always super cool. I really like to see some new ones.
And one last thing, I hope there will be a tour of your office. 🙂

Was very scared for a second reading the title of this post! I started following you last December and you quickly shot up to being one of my all time favorite bloggers. Your voice is so authentic, your content is so engrossing, and just downright inspiring. We are decorating soul mates. When you went on leave from daily blogging I missed your posts so much I went back and read all the archives. All of them. You’re still my favorite and I am so excited to keep reading!

Great post! I would love to see a tour of your work/crafting space at your new house. A post about how you organize all of your Project Life stuff/paper crafting tools/embellishments/etc. (I’m always keen to learn how other people organize this stuff). Ditto on comment above, would be great to see a post on your current fave PL/craft supplies. And will love to continue seeing posts about home decor/recipes/goal setting/time management/gardening/family life 🙂

This is exactly why I’ve visited your blog almost every day for almost 2 years. Your insights, grace and ability to discuss life experiences within the gray aspects of it all (not black & white) is uplifting.
Would love to see / hear more about whatever is filling your time. And so looking forward to your PL class at Big Picture!

I like that you write about such a wide variety of things — crafting, photography, gardening, Project Life, cooking, etc. But I especially enjoy your posts about goals, motivation, and the business of crafting and blogging, because they are so refreshingly different from what I read on other blogs.

    hi Elise,
I have always read your blog for years and I its feels like you are a friend {odd, but not stalkerish – trust me}. The little recap of the different stages of your life made me think about my different stages and I am itching to blog now.
Would love to read about time management actually. How you juggle, the everyday cleaning, cooking, caring for baby E and crafting and getting ideas and etc.
It takes me 2 hours to commute to work and I am at work from {8.30am – 7.30pm} so after getting home, having a shower and dinner, it doesn’t leave much time for anything really! Reading how you plan things, say for blogging or crafting would help.
    Thanks.

I look forward to seeing how you fit crafting and creative time in with a new baby. I am expecting my first in September and I’m completely terrified that I won’t have time to scrapbook or craft anymore. (I also work full time.) Funny how must moms start scrapbooking when they have kids, and I’m afraid I will stop. 🙂
Love your blog!! Glad you will still be writing!!

I always look forward to reading your blog–you are a favorite. I am 61 and grandmother to a 3 year old and an almost 1 year old. I have shared your blog with my daughter and some friends, especially the poignant letters you write to your daughter. I feel like we would be friends, if you lived near me! I have friends who are my age, and also older and younger friends–I love the wisdom and energy from friends of various ages! I love your creativity and love your journals. You inspired me to make some–I have given two away to friends–I just love them. I love your how-to videos. I am so glad you plan to keep blogging! I wish you would write a book about journal making! One day I would love to buy one of your journals. I should send you a photo or a few, of journal I made. Keep writing

I have to say that photo of you at the computer with Ellerie is “very you” and based on your writings it double confirms it. I think that writing for yourself, about yourself and your thoughts and feelings makes it authentic and I think that’s why we all come back on a daily basic to read what you write. Writing about post deployment difficulties when partners separate who are in love is real life and those things are big adjustments that you were going through and you shared on your blog. We all like to think that we all live happily ever after without any hick-ups but I don’t think anyone has the perfect life with no struggles in their relationship or work or family and friends. Just being you is who you are and if you stick with that then you will remain authentic to yourself. Adjusting to being a Mum is difficult and not all rosie every day because it is hard but there are lots of times when you look at them asleep, cuddled up and you wouldn’t swap it for the world even though sleepnights are so hard. Hello Elise,
I’ve been reading your blog for a long time and I always find it so inspiring. Even though I’m a completely different type of creative freelancer (a writer) in a completely different part of the world (England) so much of what you write resonates with me.
I know it’s only very early days, but I would love to read about how you are/are planning to get back into the routine of working now that Ellerie is here. I love being a freelancer, but do sometimes worry about how things will work when we choose to add a baby to the mix!
Huge (belated) congratulations on the birth of baby E. She’s such a beautiful little girl!

everyday around 2 pm (our time) I check your blog for new posts, so I am happy you are back!
I would like to know how you deal with the fact, that your life is very public. that everybody knows your name, how you look, where you live (not exactly the place), how your husband & baby girl look like, what you eat, what you think, etc… don´t you have a strange feeling about it sometimes? have there been any negative experiences?
don´t get me wrong, I love “stalking” you, but there are bad people out there too.
    keep writing 🙂

I’m the minority here I guess. I think it’s absolutely wonderful that you have a new little one in your life and of course you should be extremely excited but I feel that everything on your blog is now baby focused. I find it unfortunate because I’ve always loved reading your blog, your loaves, your DIY Wedding, your monthly goals, your pizzas, your DIY projects and now with baby, baby, baby I miss everything else and feel myself losing interest. I think your letters to baby are such a beautiful idea but are far too personal to be sharing with the internet (the entire world). Hopefully she doesn’t feel the same some day.
I’m in no way trying to be negative, trying to judge you or anything like that. I am married with two beautiful children (8 and 11) 🙂 I’ve just never felt that my life is solely about my children like so many Mothers do nowadays and I suppose I really enjoyed reading your blog because it wasn’t baby or child focused. It helps me to explore my interests outside of my family unit which to be honest every single Mother needs, regardless of if they realize it or not.
Thanks for sharing your life with us and for being honest. I just felt I needed to be honest as well.

As for things I’d love to read about- PL is always good, maybe a Day In The Life of Ellerie’s Mom, a Day In The Life of ELLERIE(!!), favorite products you used during prepnancy/post partum, favorite products you love to use (skincare, cleaning, scrap tools). I love your blog, and look forward to ANYTHING you post about. 🙂 Have a great day!
