I'm coming to the end of my "official" maternity leave. I am blessed that a big part of my day job is blogging. It's the only thing I consistently do week after week and the piece of my "freelance income pie" that takes up the most time. Every dollar I have made in the past 3+ years has been directly or indirectly related to this space.

But long before there was in any money in this blog, I loved to write here. This text box has become my friend, my sounding-board and occasionally my super inexpensive therapist. I have found my voice in this Internet corner and have learned a lot about myself just by typing (and re-typing) nearly everyday for over seven years.

I already knew I needed this outlet, but it was made even clearer when I got home from the hospital after Ellerie was born. Everything was hard those first few days and weeks. Showering was hard. Getting into and out of bed was hard. Sitting on the couch was hard. But writing was easy. I wanted to blog. I needed to blog. I was desperate for both the escape and clarity that came from stringing my thoughts together and hitting publish. I realized those first few weeks how important this space was to me on a personal level. It was awesome to see how much I needed to write.

And so, because of this, I know I'll keep writing here forever.

Since I started this blog, my story has changed many times. I have been single and living in a sorority house with my best friends. I have been a college student struggling to figure out how passion and a career path could fit together. I have been a girlfriend moving across the country to live with a boy. I have been a college graduate commuting two hours a day to work at a paper store for very little money. I have been a new entrepreneur starting an etsy shop. I have been newly engaged and planning a wedding. I have been a newlywed gleefully decorating an apartment. I have been a small business owner quitting my day job to make money doing what I loved. I have been a military spouse living alone while my husband was deployed. I have been pregnant and preparing for a baby. I have been a new homeowner feathering a nest.

And now, in addition to all of those other women, I am a mom. Over the years, I have thought a lot about how this space would be affected once I had kids. Recently I realized it would move foward the same way it always does – organically and with me. In seven years, the content and "theme" of this blog has changed many times, but, for me, it continues to work because it always feels real. I can't sleep when this blog looses it's authenticity and with a newborn, I don't need anything else keeping me up at night.

So instead of over-thinking it (she says, 500 words later), I'm going to just keep writing. About what interests me. About the things we do. The food we cook. The projects I take on. The thoughts I have. The goals I set. The mistakes I make. The people I love.

This space is where I share my story and I am so looking forward to getting back into the swing of near daily writing again. Thank you for reading.

p.s. as I start to prepare a loose editioral calendar for this fall, I welcome your suggestions! Is there anything you would like to read from me? Please feel free to share in the comments section.

Yay this makes me happy! I too have been following since pretty near the beginning (and I think at one point I went back and read everything I had missed!) I would love to see more Project Life, any photography tips/tricks and things you’ve learned along the way, and of course just your awesome insight on life! Thanks for letting us be a part of it!

    Hi Elise,
I have been reading your blog for quite a few years. I can relate to you on many levels even though our lives are different. Your posts are authentic and I learn from them. Like many readers, I am glad to hear that you will continue to write:)
Thank you for sharing and I look forward to your next post.

You know it’s a good post when I feel compelled to read all of the comments before posting one of my own. I want to echo many of the commenters in saying we’re so glad to have you continue in this space. I’ve definitely missed your consistent posting over the past few weeks but have also loved watching you welcome Paul home and welcoming Ellerie to the world. You’ve helped me understand some of the hardness that new mommas face, new families face. I can’t wait to see your new family photos. I love your goal posts.
Your blog is full of life and I can’t wait to watch it grow over the years. You write, I’ll read.

I would love to read practical tips about life with beautiful Ellerie. I’m having my first baby girl in December and can use all the help I can get! Birth story, day in the life, things you wish you knew, products you love, etc. would be great!

Elise, I’m so glad you’ll keep blogging.
So, I think what i would like to learn from you is how do you find the energy and drive to do things?
You do so much on a daily basis and I barely get anything done! And when I manage to find some time all I want to do is drop and watch TV at night!!
So, advice on getting things done would be much appreciated by someone who’s obviously getting it right.

I’ve been reading since you were that college student living in a sorority house and it has been so much fun to read all of your posts along the way! I love that your blog is genuine without ever being preachy. You are living life and allowing others to peek in on the action. Which is awesome. I did read up in the comments that someone suggested more videos and I agree – those are always fun to watch!

Elise, I”m not much of a blogger, but I imagine it must be an interesting community of people (you don’t really know). Strangers that feel like friends? Anyway, I just wanted to reach out and send you a quick message (very rare for me to actually comment instead of just read blog posts ;)….).
As I’ve been reading about your thoughts leading up to motherhood and your new experiences right out of the gate, you remind me so much of someone VERY familiar! You remind me of me, six years ago, in a very similar place in life (with the perspective of motherhood, not small business owner/military wife).
I just wanted to encourage you, if I could. It was SO HARD for me. Everything. All of it. But it wasn’t supposed to be. I was the one who acted like a mom before I even had a baby. I was a preschool teacher who was in love with children. I thought bringing a baby home from the hospital was going to feel like a honeymoon. I thought my husband and I would just fall into a natural symbiotic routine of parenting, and of course agree on all of it! I thought breastfeeding was going to be a piece of cake! Ha! None of it felt the way I thought it would. Everything hurt. Everything was harder. Except loving that little person, that part was easy!
Everyone has a unique experience, so I’m not saying I know JUST HOW YOU FEEL. I don’t. But I do want to tell you it gets easier. It gets better. Things start to fit into place. The pain starts to go away. The memory of the pain starts to go away (you know what I mean?).
I have a beautiful six year old girl and an adorable 3 year old boy! (Their birth, post birth and breastfeeding stories are very different from each other) Life is good! There are always new “phases”, new problems, new stumbling blocks, new stages. It is a wonderful ebb and flow and so exciting and fun! Sometimes I forget I was that new mother, in pain, in shock, unsure, uncomfortable. I forget how hard everything was. It feels so long ago. It feels like that was a different person.
I recognize some of your words. I recognize some of the emotion. And I just wanted to encourage you, Elise (from one stranger to another. from one mom to another). It gets better! It gets easier! (it probably already is?)
If you every want to talk more about it (a stranger, I know, weird), I would be happy to email with you!

A quick glance revealed to me that I am the only male commenting on this. Maybe I’m not the target audience but I read your blog every day, follow you on twitter and IG, and cannot get enough of your STYLE. My favorite posts are on how you style things from quilts to your house to your Project Life binder. How you choose fabrics to furniture, etc.
I also tear up while reading your Ellerie posts at work, for what it’s worth. It makes for some embarassing encounters with coworkers barging in my office. 🙂
I am a loyal fan and will continue to read anything you post. Just keep posting!

I too check it every morning from Hawaii 🙂 As a Navy wife eek! Newly married, I love your perspective on the military (love that your husband is pursing medicine because that’s the path my husband wants to take too).
I hope in the near future, I will become a mother. Love to hear how your cloth diaper situation is going because I think I’d like to do that too! Where you purchase baby’s E clothes (maybe DIY onsies, headbands, etc.). How you feel about future baby E’s nutrition (considering organic, watching out for GMOs). LOVE your letters to Ellerie. Something I wish my mother did. Something I think I will do 🙂
LOVE YOUR PL. It’s almost like you plan your outfits around your layouts! 😉 (Although, I’m sure you don’t). They are sooo put together and classically clean.
Love it all. Can’t wait to see what’s in store!

I appreciate this post a lot. It seems too many bloggers are quitting because things are getting too rough, or they don’t want to share so much information anymore, or they get more negative feedback than they would like. I think every blogger may go through those phases of feeling that way, but I don’t think that means they should quit. I understand that it’s all personal preference, and I fully respect every individual decision. But it’s nice to see this, and I agree 100%.

Elise, you are pretty much my hero. This space has always felt authentic to me, and I think it always will be because you are authentic. You are the thread that runs through all of it, whatever the topic or theme may be. I love the way you write–your intelligence and creativity are always in evidence, but even more than that, I love the way that you don’t have to jazz things up with lots of cute phrases and exclamation points. You have a remarkable gift for letting things be what they are. It’s something I aspire to. And it’s what keeps us all coming back for more. We love you! (And Ellerie too) 🙂

Whew For a second there I thought you were going to say you were giving up blogging but it’s good to know that you’re staying here. Thanks! I’ve been reading you, mostly lurking, I hardly ever comment, for a little over two years now and I thoroughly enjoy each and every post. Apart from Kaelah Bee, you’re the most authentic blogger I read and I really appreciate it, but please, please, please don’t turn into a complete baby blogger. I know having a child will inevitably change the content of what you post and I’m fine with that. It’s understandable. I think up to this point the way you’ve juggled lifestyle/crafts/small business and the preparing-for-a-baby teeter/totter has been completely fluid. I just think that turning into a complete baby blogger will soon alienate those of us who have yet to have a child. I especially loved your blog when Paul was away on deployment last year (not good for you, but totally beneficial to me) because I was dealing with my best friend also being deployed last year for my first time and the things you were posting were things that I related to which totally made me feel normal and like I wasn’t crazy. In short, it pretty much boils down to, keep doing what you’re doing, and I’ll keep coming back. Which I really look forward to. Also, welcome back!

Funny, but contrary to other people, it never even crossed my mind that you might want to stop blogging. You’ve said time and time again that this is how you process your thoughts (which I totally get, since this has been the same for me for the past 9 years!), and it’s also the basis for your small business, so… And even though your maternity journey is totally out of my experience (don’t have kids, never wanted them), I’m sure I’ll keep on being inspired by your great attitude toward life in general. It’s gonna be good to have you back on a daily basis 🙂

Another reader used the phrase “text-heavy” in her comment. Those are the posts that I like to read as well. I prefer content over photos, as I myself am not a picture-taker nor a scrapbooker. However, writing? That’s right up my alley. Some ideas: How do you manage stress? What kinds of obstacles have you had to overcome to get to where you are now (as a wife, as a mom, as a crafter, as a home owner)? What are your goals for the rest of this year?
Congratulations, by the way, on your first child. I wish you and your family the best. 🙂

It felt unnatural at first, but now I love to do it, and I know she will love reading them when she’s older and can appreciate them. – I realize that’s not related to what you asked for comments about… but I wanted to tell you that your decision to continue blogging is appreciated by yet another random individual (this one’s in Colorado). 🙂
