enJOY it

I'm coming to the end of my "official" maternity leave. I am blessed that a big part of my day job is blogging. It's the only thing I consistently do week after week and the piece of my "freelance income pie" that takes up the most time. Every dollar I have made in the past 3+ years has been directly or indirectly related to this space.

But long before there was in any money in this blog, I loved to write here. This text box has become my friend, my sounding-board and occasionally my super inexpensive therapist. I have found my voice in this Internet corner and have learned a lot about myself just by typing (and re-typing) nearly everyday for over seven years.

I already knew I needed this outlet, but it was made even clearer when I got home from the hospital after Ellerie was born. Everything was hard those first few days and weeks. Showering was hard. Getting into and out of bed was hard. Sitting on the couch was hard. But writing was easy. I wanted to blog. I needed to blog. I was desperate for both the escape and clarity that came from stringing my thoughts together and hitting publish. I realized those first few weeks how important this space was to me on a personal level. It was awesome to see how much I needed to write.

And so, because of this, I know I'll keep writing here forever.

Since I started this blog, my story has changed many times. I have been single and living in a sorority house with my best friends. I have been a college student struggling to figure out how passion and a career path could fit together. I have been a girlfriend moving across the country to live with a boy. I have been a college graduate commuting two hours a day to work at a paper store for very little money. I have been a new entrepreneur starting an etsy shop. I have been newly engaged and planning a wedding. I have been a newlywed gleefully decorating an apartment. I have been a small business owner quitting my day job to make money doing what I loved. I have been a military spouse living alone while my husband was deployed. I have been pregnant and preparing for a baby. I have been a new homeowner feathering a nest.

And now, in addition to all of those other women, I am a mom. Over the years, I have thought a lot about how this space would be affected once I had kids. Recently I realized it would move foward the same way it always does – organically and with me. In seven years, the content and "theme" of this blog has changed many times, but, for me, it continues to work because it always feels real. I can't sleep when this blog looses it's authenticity and with a newborn, I don't need anything else keeping me up at night.

So instead of over-thinking it (she says, 500 words later), I'm going to just keep writing. About what interests me. About the things we do. The food we cook. The projects I take on. The thoughts I have. The goals I set. The mistakes I make. The people I love.

This space is where I share my story and I am so looking forward to getting back into the swing of near daily writing again. Thank you for reading.

p.s. as I start to prepare a loose editioral calendar for this fall, I welcome your suggestions! Is there anything you would like to read from me? Please feel free to share in the comments section.

hooray ! I love you & your blog Elise and I have been following along with you & your life through all of the stages mentioned above. I check your blog every morning @ 9am Atlantic Time (Nova Scotia) as I sit down at my own creative entrepreneur desk with my breakfast. Your posts are always interesting and often very inspiring and just what I need to hear. How can it be that dear sweet lil’ E. is nearly 6 weeks old. I hope you had a great official maternity leave but I know I speak for many in saying “hooray” we’ve missed your near daily posts ! with love, Susan

In the past you’ve done “a day in the life” type of thing on your life. Maybe you should do one on Baby E each month or quarterly and watch how she changes, grows into new routines, etc! You’ll be planning her 1st Birthday party before you know it.
Keep on crafting…and loving your family.

I’m so glad that your blog is one of the things you’ve chosen to carry over from the “old you” into the new-mom you. I can’t wait to read whatever you write, as you and your blog evolve, because I know it will be written with love and authenticity.
I’ve wanted to write with a request for some time but didn’t want to burden you on maternity leave. Now that you ask though…. 😉
Your blog, IG feed and Project Life album are my favorite. I love the pics you share on IG. Can you talk more about editing/filters, if any, that you do for your IG pics?
I’ve also noticed that while you share your IG pics in the square format, those same events are often included as 4×6 in your PL album. (I love that you do this.) I would love to know more about how you decide which photo/size you’ll include and how you avoid getting overwhelmed (making an assumption here) with all of the photos. If you’re like me you have a thousand photos on your camera-roll, PLUS IG pics. How do you decide?!
Thank you for continuing to share your story and your journey. I love it! 🙂

My favorite posts from you are definitely home decor and small business related. But it has been a treat these last weeks to relive life with a newborn through your words 🙂

I love my ‘Elise’ break and always look forward to your crafting, home, marriage and ‘the rest of your life’ posts – absolutely all of them 🙂 I’m in Australia and your posts always make me appreciate just how similar people on opposite sides of the world can be.

I feel like I am a blogger like you: with an ever-changing theme, and the need to write & re-write through it. I always adore what you put out there, but as far as suggestions: I’d love to hear more about the woman who was trying to “figure out how passion and a career path could fit together” because I suppose I’m currently that woman. “Looking back” posts? The Elise you are now talking about posts from your first year as a blogger — that might be interesting.
I look forward to what you come up with!

Elise, so glad to hear that blogging is something that you love because so many of us love reading what you write! I’ve been going back through your photoshop tutorials because I’m trying to learn photoshop. If you have any more tips for photoshop, those would be great! I love seeing your project life album here, so I think it would be fun to hear your more about your thoughts on project life. I’m also working on project life and it makes me think a bit more about how I want to live my life, but also about how I want to remember it. A while ago you wrote about green skincare. I’d be interested to hear your follow-up thoughts on that. Does it still work for you? Have you learned anything new about green skincare? Is there a way to make it more affordable? Those are a few thoughts, but in general, I’m interested in all your posts about your daily life, your family, craft projects and any other projects you take on. Your efficiency is amazing to me! Thanks for all the inspiration 🙂

Honestly there isn’t really anything I could suggest – it doesn’t matter what you’re writing about because it’s your writing that is so appealing. I’ve followed your blog for years now and I often find myself checking back on old posts (recently your quilting tutorials as I’m planning on starting one soon) and it always strikes me how much everything has changed for you over the years and yet your writing has remained beautifully consistent. I think this is why I love your blog so much, it is the most real blog I’ve read.

My goodness… I have read about 7 years of your life! I have frequently felt envious, and wished I could share so very much of my life online with so many people, and have it documented.
This might not be a topic of use — but I am always interested in how people organize and keep track of all their digital photos. You have multiple cameras, you are loading photos to the blog, to Instagram, to who knows where else, and there has to be a way to track it all.
Here’s an old post I wrote about how I organize and name my photo files:
    http://meadowwalk.blogspot.com/2009/01/how-to-name-photo-files.html
I am always interested in that topic, and also, if you have a separation between “paid work” photos and personal photos. For example, Stacy Julian uses 2 different iPhoto libraries entirely.
