enJOY it

an archived personal and craft blog from Elise Blaha Cripe.

I had this post planned and ready to go, but it feels incredibly trivial today to share a corner of my house when so many in Oklahoma and surrounding states just lost everything to devastating tornadoes. Sending prayers & aid. If you'd like to help, donations can be made through redcross.org or send $10 quickly by texting REDCROSS to 90999.

Dottedline

Openspace

This little nook is sort of a random spot. When our house was flipped, they knocked out a bunch of walls and created a very open floor plan. Overall, I'm a huge fan, but figuring out exactly how to map out our furniture was a little tricky at first.

Favoritespot

We decided to turn this space into a "breakfast nook." Which means absolutely nothing except for the fact that this is where I sit and enjoy my breakfast and coffee every morning. Before we had the blue chair, I sat on our white leather couch (which was sold because it was WAY too big and way too white for the space). When the couch was gone, I sat on the rug.

Windows

Because of the windows, this area just asks you to come sit and enjoy the morning.

Plantstand

One of the first things we did here was add the plant stand. (I blogged about that in detail here.) I still LOVE it. It was actually one of the first "new" things created for this house and it's still one of my favorite projects of the last 85 days. It sticks to the theme you see all over this house – simple, real wood, green. My goal everywhere is to bring in textures and wood and plants and this area is no exception.

Chairs2

After the plant stand, the space sat "in-progress" for awhile. Months actually. Then when Paul's family visited, they generously helped us furnish the space as a house warming gift. We picked up the two chairs and low profile round coffee table at West Elm. (Tip for West Elm : they offer a 10% military discount! Tip for furniture stores in general : ask about floor models! The round table was not a floor model, but it was not in a box and so we saved 20%)

Chairs

I love the chairs. I love that they coordinate without being the same at all. The pillows were both DIY. The striped is from totally random fabric and the heart pillow turorial is here. I entertained every idea under the sun for seating in this space. A smaller couch. A loveseat. Lots and lots of vintage and craigslist pieces. A daybed. Matching chairs. Chairs that didn't match in shape but matched in color. Chairs that matched in shape but not in color. In the end, after a million mind changes, these were the winners. The blue one is mine and the tan one is Paul's, but if you're ever visiting, please sit anywhere.

Coffeetable

The coffee table is perfect too. It's low. Obviously. Too low if you use the space all the time and need a super functioning coffee table to work on or eat on or something. But really rad if you don't want to block a window and just want to set stuff down. I love that it's round so baby girl will not crash into a corner (we've got enough corners in the house to baby proof) and obviously, I love that it's neutral and wood.

Ottoman

The ottoman I found a few weeks later at Home Goods and knew it would be perfect next to the coffee table. It gives the room an extra level of height. The circles and colors don't compete but of course don't match either. It's the perfect height for me and my chair. The rug is a few years old and from Crate & Barrel. Love the black and white and love the circles on the stripes. I have almost the exact same rug in the baby's room, but it's twice the size and was half the cost (found at Home Goods).

Shelf

The final touch on this room came Saturday when my dad installed the shelf. This shelf was my "icing on the cake" dream and what I knew this space needed to ground the big script art (still my favorite) and complete the room. I bought wood (I think pine) at Home Depot that was 11.25 inches wide and had it cut down to 87.5 inches in length. We brought it home and it slipped like a glove into the space between the fireplace brick and the window wall which was a huge relief. It had to be perfect, I wanted this shelf to look built in, not awkwardly floating a few inches from the walls.

Shelfheight

We stained it and mounted it into studs on brackets from Ikea. I left the brackets their natural wood color mostly for ease but also to just give some contrast. The height was determined by me sitting in my chair and reaching my arm out to see where I'd want to set my coffee cup. So I guess it's "custom" fit. πŸ˜‰

Shelfart

The fun part, of course, was styling the shelf and adding our favorite little knick-knacks that were all out in full force at the townhouse. Plants, obviously. And some art. That painting of Paul and I was done by my 85-year-old Grandpa. That's my favorite wedding photo. The Picasso print was an anniversary gift from Paul. The lightbulb is something Paul made in ceramics class in high school. The jar of rocks and bowl of shells were collected by me on our beach in Oxnard.

Shelf2

Yes. This is my favorite spot already. It's got my view, my plants and so many of my treasured items. But then I remember that this spot is just beginning to be lived in. This space will offer our family so much. I think about slow breakfasts & coffee here on Paul's days off. I think about sitting in my blue chair and nursing the little one. I think about her pulling herself up and taking her first steps across the striped rug. Oh man, I love.

random product sources not mentioned above : woven wall hanging, frames from Target & Aaron brothers, coasters from Anthropologie, letter C from Urban Outfitters, I made that "best is yet to come" art and had it printed at Office Depot.

And though I know it’s not in the space you’re focusing on here, where did you get the curvy floor lamp by the grey couch? That’s exactly what I’m looking for.

Oh, Elise. This looks amazing. Please come to my house and decorate for me! πŸ™‚ We’ve lived in our home for almost 4 years and still have large open spaces I have no idea what to do with. I keep saying “someday”, but little ones and full-time jobs just keep it on the back burner. So much of what you’ve done with your space is inspiring me. One step at a time and eventually it will come together, right? πŸ™‚ I went back and looked at your canvas project and think I might start there…<3

I’m redecorating and adding personal touches/mementos all over our space right now too, 10 months into living here. Life got busy and I got sidetracked but I’ve got more time/money available for it now. I’ve become obsessed with plants lately after seeing you add so many and Elsie from ABM add tons to her house. It’s amazing what plants can do to make an apartment feel like home! Congrats on your progress!

Wow, I really love your home & the spaces you’ve created. You might be surprised at just how functional the low coffee table is for everyday use! I have the same carved wood table and my three kiddos love to sit on the floor and play games on it, etc.. It’s nice to not have to kneel or prop ourselves up to reach games on a regular height coffee table! It seems to invite everyone to relax on the rug with some pillows and hang out πŸ™‚

And this is totally off topic but something I wish someone had told me (and all the professionals say the exact opposite so I wasn’t totally prepared): breast feeding is hard. You’ll might want to cry in the beginning. It took me about six weeks until it wasn’t just awful. But now we’re at 8months and going strong.

Thank you for you concerns for Moore, OK. I live there but thankfully we are on vacation. As far as we know our house still stands and my animals are okay in the kennel. The tornado only missed our neighborhood by a few blocks. It’s very sad and we aren’t sure what we are going home to as far as other damage. Please continue to say your prayers for us as we will need all we can get. Love you house, been reading you for several years and look forward to your posts everyday. πŸ˜‰

Super LOVE how personal this space is. It’s not matchy-matchy but everything goes, if that makes sense. Such a gorgeous view from those chairs! Just be careful once baby girl becomes mobile that she doesn’t demolish your gorgeous plant set-up! My kids were never into the plants, but they tried to eat dirt on the daily. We had to give up the few large houseplants that we had on the floor and are just now reconsidering bringing them back into the house (a year later). Even with the plant stand, those little baby and toddler fingers kept finding their way into the dirt. Pesky little kids πŸ˜‰

I love the little nook and I can see why you would want to sit there, eat your breakfast and have a coffee. It’s going to be a great spot to sit and feed your baby girl…..how pleasant is that outlook. Open plan living is great and as you say it’s hard to make each part of an open room feel cosy however you have achieved it spot on and I think by adding the shelf and personal photos and items it’s really finished it off and if you didn’t have that there it would make a huge difference…Loving your cosy little corner you have envisaged and created. Well done. Regards Kathy A, Brisbane, Australia

Creating a space that feels welcoming, inspiring and comforting….is so important.
Love the big open windows too – wondered about whether they needed covers either for privacy or energy efficiency? How hot or cold does it get there in Califorina?
Even though we live in the sub-tropics here in Australia, l find we lose most of our heat in winter through our large open windows. For that reason l installed wooden venetian blinds that can be pulled all the way up when l want to have the windows open. The best of both worlds….

I think that is because pain with breastfeeding can hold on much LONGER. It’s not a day. It can be weeks, or months. But hey, it’s not painful for everyone, I hear! πŸ™‚ Something I had never thought about? There are pain-killers that are ok to take when BF. I definitely hope to remember that for the next time!
(Something I will absolutely remember, and something everyone kept telling me over and over but was so hard to believe when I hadn’t come out on the other end yet, in all sorts of situations – pain, sleeping issues, whatever: It’s just phase!!! πŸ™‚ )

These windows face north so thankfully there is not really direct sun at any time of day. I have not been here for a full winter to know how much heat they will let escape, but I know they are not responsible for baking the house. We have windows on the west that are letting WAY too much evening light in and bringing the heat up… we will be getting shades for those. πŸ™‚

Hi Elise, I keep coming back to this post because I have been considering ordering this coffee table from West Elm for quite some time. I live in Maui, HI, though so can’t see it in person (and shipping to me is EXPENSIVE with no real opportunity to return it – so I’ll be stuck with it). I’m concerned about the low height. I love the look, but worry about functionality. You mentioned that in your post. This would be used as our main coffee table in our living room, but I am considering – like you – a narrower, taller, stool-like table to go with it. After you’ve lived with this table for several months, do you have any additional insight?? Thanks in advance!! I’m loving all of your posts and reading about your new adventures into motherhood. Keep sharing it all!!
