enJOY it

an archived personal and craft blog from Elise Blaha Cripe.

I was seven when my family moved from Minnesota to California. Our new house was a single story and the ceilings were high which meant there were very big walls. To fill them, my dad decided we'd need some "Big Art." His solution was to create thin wooden rectangle frames and staple gun fabric around them. They were huge (maybe 7×11 feet?) and patterned and colorful. I remember them vividly and I remember him talking about "Big Art" just as often.

Paintedcanvases

In this house, I am working with the same thing – a single story home with some very blank, very good sized walls. In the future, maybe we'll be able to afford Real Big Art by a Real Artist, but in the meantime, on our budget, I'm taking a page from my parents and adding lots of DIY art to help make the house a home.

Blankcanvases

Which brings me to my two canvases. I picked up two 3×3 feet squares at a craft store during a half off sale (with an extra 20% off coupon). Canvases are expensive – especially the thick ones – and so I always wait for a good coupon or sale.

I let them sit for a day or two. Then tackled them, one at a time.

Bigart

I knew I wanted abstracts and was encouraged by my success with this painting from early April. I also knew I wanted them to be totally different. One was going to be color. One was going to be black and white. One was going to be "blended." One was going to be shapes. They were for sure going to hang side by side on the wall behind the couch.

Paint

Just like my first abstract, I used acrylic paints and just sort of dove in. The pink and teal is SO different from what I expected it to be and the black and white is almost exactly what I had in my mind at the beginning. Super odd how that works out.

Graphicart

I let them sit against the wall for the weekend and after I got back from traveling on Monday I gave them a good look to be sure I was still a fan. Monday it was hard to tell. But Tuesday, after I recovered from my traveling haze, I decided I loved them and hammered two nails into the wall to get them displayed.

I've walked by them and tilted my head a good 20 times since and I really love the "BOOM" they are bringing into our house. The color one is connecting with the color over the fireplace and in my pinwheel painting that hangs on the TV wall. The black and white connects with all the black and white I have filling this house. They are not fancy. They're not famous. And they're certainly not going to win any art shows. But they are totally me, totally inexpensive and totally "Big Art."

We're one step closer to filling this home. My nesting obsessed brain is so thrilled.

I had to sit and look at the pink and green one for a while. I wasn’t sure, then I was certain. I love the white flecks in it and the darker undertones in the teal. It’s amazing. I am always so scared to try something abstract. Do you practice on something else before you start?
How much paint did it use up?
I also love the black and white one. It’s great!

    I love.
And just wait until your refrigerator and walls are covered in the most pure and precious art you’ll ever see…your child’s. 🙂

I like reading about your process in this.
In my family no one does stuff like this. We buy framed poster art, frequently, and that’s what is used for decor. My mom is a great decorator, but her style is more French Country.
In my new place, I can’t use any “art”. I have SO much stuff for decor and not enough wall space. I collect handmade brooms and as it is, I am not going to be able to hang even a fraction of my collection.
Plus, my new place is kind of urban and more graphic so my whole rustic – nature-y – beachy theme is just not working. sigh I’ve dumped a lot of stuff I liked.

They are beautiful, Elise and go perfectly together. I love filling the walls of our home with my own art, too. I love how it takes things to the next level in turning a house into a home.

I have two tiny canvases that I should do something with. Maybe I’ll find the inspiration this weekend.

Thank you! I don’t practice but that’s because I have no patience and I’d be way to bored trying to recapture the same thing on the real deal. And TONS of paint. Best to start with fresh tubes. 🙂

I love these Elise! Who needs expensive art when you can paint it yourself?? I can’t wait to decorate my own home (when I have one!) with lots of art that I’ve created myself! 🙂

Thanks for taking the time to reply! You’re far braver than I! I think I’ll have to practice a little bit first. Oh, and buy new tubes of paint. Thanks for the tip. 🙂

Have you ever thought of making your own canvases? I’ve made a few recently, and it’s so easy. Plus, you can make them in the exact size you want. All you need is wood, some brackets, and material (I used leftover curtains and sheets). For some of my smaller ones, I had some old picture frames that the glass was broken. So I popped everything out and used the wood frame as my frame for the stretched canvas. Then I simply staplegun (a simple hand one, not an air compressor one) the material to the back.

I should probably be commenting on the paintings but how interesting that you had your early childhood in Minnesota. I thought you were a Cali girl through and through. Why did your family move to Cali? Do you ever miss Minnesota?

my dad’s job moved us out here. And no… not really. I was so young when we moved and I am GREATLY influenced by the weather. 😉 I miss people, of course, but am happy to live here now.

These turned out great! What an awesome pop of colour! I can’t imagine making canvases that big, especially abstract ones… I’m too scared to even make little ones! I have a small ones that I’m going to a basic text canvas with the places I’ve travelled with my partner… Just deciding if I want to include the places I’ve been to by myself as well.

    I didn’t know you lived in Minnesota…where?
When I look at the B&W one, I see the letters LOVE. I actually see OLVE and then rearrange the letters.

Wow I completely adore these. They may not be famous, but they would definitely be worth paying for! You are really inspiring me right now to make some simple, expressive art for my house! Thank you for that, and for this.

Art can definitely be expensive, but a great alternative is looking into your local art schools and seeing when their student art sales are. The school that I teach at has some fabulous talent and it’s a fun thing to go to anyway. Sometimes you have to search for a gem, but some of the work is fantastic and it can be pretty budget-friendly. Plus, you are boosting the confidence of a young artist and supporting them emotionally and financially!

They are really amazing pieces. We have insanely huge walls in our current home and it took me forever to put anything on them. My boys paint small canvases all the time. I really wish I had thought to get them a big canvas to work on.

so cool that you make your own art… I have to muster up the courage to try that.
    I have a question… kind of a silly question…
how do you hang your art and photos etc??
Do you just pound in any old nail and go for it or is it more involved than that?
I want to jazz things up around here with more art and photos… my husband has me all paranoid with how to hang things (he’s bent on finding a stud for almost everything!! LOL!!). I really want to start framing and hanging things on my own.
    Any tips??

for light things, like canvases and most frames, I just pound a nail in. Shelves and heavy items, I find studs. 🙂

These are amazing!!!! I love the colors in the first one, and I love the black/white in the second! I don’t think you need to replace these with something “professional” for a long time!!
I’ve played around with decor art canvases before, but did my biggest project in our new house painting over an ugly vintage piece… http://www.adventuresindressmaking.com/2012/10/in-which-i-pretend-to-be-painter-diy.html It was so cool to get to pick the colors for our space! We have another DIY piece that my brother in law did, also painting over a cheap canvas, here… http://instagram.com/p/VamthYFZZB/ So fun to decorate with a creative streak!
