Bedroom-curtains

My dream for the bedroom is to make it feel like a zen-paradise. I recognize that as soon-to-be parents, we are about to be hit with a love-able but crazy tornado for the next 18+ years and this makes me so inspired to be sure we have a clean and simple bedroom (or really retreat?) that feels comfortable and special.

White-curtains

I am far from there – this room still needs a lot of work – but getting curtain rods and curtains (all from Ikea) installed this past weekend was a huge step for the space.

Backyard-curtains

Our bedroom windows face our backyard which means privacy is not really an issue, but I thought adding some super-lightweight white curtains would help define and cozy-up the space. The room had three windows in a row and I choose to add one long curtain rod (in black) above all of them and attach three long curtain panels that extend all the way to the ground.

Ikea-curtain-rod

All the wall brackets that hold the curtain rod are to the right of each window. This means the curtains all pull right to be opened and left whenever I want them closed. The farthest left window bumps up against the corner of the room so I just ran the curtain rod right up against the corner wall. On the right, I extended it out about a foot to allow the curtain room to move right. Because the curtains end up covering the wall between the windows, the illusion is that this is one long window as opposed to three separate ones. That was sort of a happy accident.

Whitecurtains

The whole room is going to come together from these curtains, I can tell. I am going for a totally neutral (black, white, tan, cream, wood) palette with the only color coming from plants and maybe a large but subtle painted canvas or two. Can't wait to share more.

Sounds like a lovely plan to have your own little retreat from the little monsters 🙂 Looking good! I’m quite interested to see how else you’re going to be shaping this space…

I don’t know if you check out younghouselove blog, which is amazing for DIY home decorating, but they do a similar thing with curtains and then use bamboo blinds right under the rod and drop them to just a tiny bit below the window and it gives the illusion of taller windows and one window. It looks so soothing and classy. I think you would like it.

This is gorgeous and clean, I agree that the bedroom space has to stay zen, quiet, and calm. Great job at accomplishing all of that thus far! I can’t wait to find and start sprucing our Hawaiian home in May!

Well done on creating an illusion! I absolutely saw this as one long window and didn’t even consider that there was wall space between them until you mentioned it!

I don’t know! Isn’t that awful! I bought them last month and didn’t save the packaging! They came in packs of two and I want to say they were under $10 for the pack. Not the cheapest but not the expensive ones. I felt all of them and looked for something that was see through but not mesh (there is a super cheap mesh option). Good luck!

Those look like the ones we have in our bedroom as well- kind of an eyelet or flower pattern? Our window is actually a sliding glass door so we have the brackets far enough beyond door that it doesn’t block any light or entry on either side. It’s nice to sees them blowing in the breeze when the door is open.

That is the theme I want for our bedroom as well. I want it to be our retreat! I’m still searching for the perfect bedding (my husband doesn’t care for the down comforter so it’s back to the drawing board!) and I need to hang up our artwork, oh and buy curtains. It is such a process! Kudos to you Elise for getting the ball rolling!!

I misread “crazy tornado” as “crazy TOMATO” and was really stumped for a minute there! Hehe.
Can’t wait to see more of what you’re doing in this room. I’m sure it will be awesome!

That seems really zen to me!
But I wonder, don’t you need something to make the room dark?
Not sure about sunrises and sunsets, but here in Holland in the summer it can be light at 5 a.m.
Not ideal on your day off, when you want to sleep in.
(maybe not even an option with babycripe haha!)

Hello Elise, I bought the ikea hugad rod (black) but it is a rod that is too short for my big long window. I don’t see a very long hugad rod in Ikea, ..did you use 3 black rods from one end to the other end or only one single road?

It was just one, the longest that they had and it extended out (so I guess it was two pieces total).
