Quilt

This quilt was inspired by a rug that I saw on Pinterest (here is the original photo). A previous pinner had mentioned how rad the rug would look as a quilt and OH MAN, I loved that idea.

I kept it simple. Black and white. Black and white. Black and white.

Quilt3

The top was easy – solid colored triangles sewn together following this method. I sewed strips and then sewed the strips together.

Quilt2

The tricky part was figuring out how I would quilt it all together. I decided NOT to try and wrestle it through my sewing machine and instead hand-stitched it. I used black hand quilting thread and went around about 80% of the black triangles. (Not all.. just enough to hold it together.) Unlike some of the other quilts I have worked on, this means the stitching that holds it all together is hidden on the front side.

Quilt5

But it's super obvious on the backside. I went with the same off-white as the front and so the black stitching shows there almost like random constellations.

I bound with just black fabric as well. It would have been fun to add a pop of color but really, black and white was the name of the game here.

Quilt4

I love the pattern and am so happy with how it turned out…except… I made a rookie mistake and it's a bit too small for our bed. I have to realize that our thick mattress needs a king-sized cover, not a queen. But, I've got a plan to make this work as bedding. Hoping it all comes together and I'll share soon!

I love it. And look forward to seeing what you turn it into. Rookie mistakes are essential for learning 🙂

I know absolutelt nothing about quilting, but my first thought was “maybe she could add some kind of skirt all around it so it becomes large enough for a bedspread?”

Again – beautifully simple! You have inspired me to start my first quilt and I’m just trying to sandwich it and will start quilting today (on the machine). Quilting is something I never contemplated before I started following your blog and I’m enjoying it immensely. Thank you!

There’s a Czech saying: “He who does nothing, spoils nothing” – meaning: it’s better to do stuff and make mistakes. When I was making my kitchen cabinets, I cut the countertop 8 inches too short. It all worked out in the end and I learned 🙂

I made my first (and only so far) quilt too small for my bed! I fold it at the bottom instead of covering the whole top.

So pretty! I love how simple it looks, yet I can still tell all the hard work you put into it!

I’ve made quilts for years – for other people. And when I decided to go from a twin to to a full, I looked online to see how big the quilt would need to be. I was so excited and loved my quilt – and then when I got the bed, the quilt was just a bit too small… ugh!! I ended up flipping the quilt lengthwise and then always making the bed with “folded open” sheets. lol. I know its too small, but no one who has seen it knows. 😉

I hear you on the queen sized quilt/bedspread not being quite big enough for the queen bed. I bought a new “bed in a bag” last year for my new queen bed, and while the sheets and pillowcases are great, the bedspread doesn’t go down on the sides as much as I would like.

Thought about that! But it is long enough, just not wide enough.

Quilt is awesome!!! I can not sew, much less quilt BUT I saw a very cool quilt on Pinterest. It made me think of you, which is kinda creepy since I don’t really know you!!!LOL!!!
If you arrange the triangles a certain way you can make it into chevrons. This one, each row of chevron got a bit darker in color. Made me wish I could sew!!!

You will learn that quilting stitches need to be small for a reason (besides pride of craftsmanship). Long stitches catch on things–rings, fingernails, buttons–and children are apt to pull on them and then the thread breaks and you have to fix it. It takes longer to quilt that way, but it will last longer as well. And next time, before you quilt it, put it on the bed! Then you can easily add a row or two if necessary, especially since you are just using plain black and white. It will always be a bit smaller quilted than unquilted.
Also, if your stitches look pretty–small & even–using black thread looks wonderful. Amish quilts were often done with a contrasting color of thread, to give an extra dimension to the design.

I think seeing the stitches just adds the homemade touch lol. I’d love to make this and bound it will yellow or aqua. Can’t wait to see what you do with it.

Love it! I’ve been really wanting to make it quilt for a while now, but kept putting it off because prior attempts at learning to use the sewing machine were anything but fun or successful. So this got me really excited! When you say you hand stitched it, does this mean the entire thing, or just once you had sewn all the triangles together with a machine you then hand sewed the backing on?

Wow, this turned out awesome! I’ve been trying to find some great fabric to use to make a quite, but I can’t quite find a colour scheme that me and my partner both like… Black and white however, we both agree on, so I’m thinking I might try something similar, but with a bright green around the edges! Sorry to hear your’s is a little small… I love blankets to be bigger than the bed as well (added bonus that when Michael is being a blanket hog, I still have plenty of blanket to use! LOL). I hope you can work something out so you can make work!

It looks great, I am starting to love the simple look of just solids, or solids like that on the front with a cool vintage print on the back. I actually made my daughter a quilt for a twin size bed and then decided to get her a full bed instead. Ugh, I was so upset to not use the quilt that I actually took the binding off, added two more strips (they were large squares) added some more backing and batting and re binded it. Does it look perfect? No but the few spots that are wonky don’t even show once it’s on the bed and it was worth the trouble.
When I added the extra piece of batting, I overlapped it over the existing by like 3 inches and then once I topstitched it, it didn’t move and it’s been in the wash a bunch too.

it looks great! it would have been neat to use a colored border, like you mentioned, and maybe coordinating thread to quilt it with. really give it a pop…try that on your next one! 😉

I think I might throw all caution to the wind and have a crack at making this! To date I’ve sewn one skirt, cushion covers, bunting…nothing quite this spectacular. What’s the harm in trying? (She asks naively). Thanks Elise!
