Radfull

You might have noticed I am no where near finishing a project using all 27 materials. My intention was to create 27 projects using 27 different things before my 28th birthday … which has now passed. (You can see what I did complete here.)

Clutch

You might be bummed that I didn't finish.

Or, you might be like me, and be glad I let this project go. 😉

Cards4

At the beginning of January I looked at my list of what was left (glitter, metal, stone, cork, tile, feathers, beads, dye, glue) and sighed. The last thing I wanted to do was throw myself at nine items that at the moment didn't interest me in the slightest. Instead, I wanted to recover the rocking chair for the baby. I wanted to knit a blanket as soon as we knew if we were going to be having a boy or a girl. I wanted to get started on his or her quilt. I wanted to enjoy my time with Paul. I wanted to start thinking about a new house! (And then decorations for that new house!)

Wreath

So I made the executive decision to throw the list of stuff I didn't want to do out the window and focus instead on all the projects that I was looking forward to tackling.

Woven5

This was a great plan and as it turns out, I still ended up trying new things (like the wall hangings and the flamingo painting) which is rad.

Flamingo4

Twenty-seven was by far one of my best years for creative projects. There were work projects of course, but there were also oodles of just for fun projects that I made to brighten up my house (and the houses of others in the form of gifted quilts).

Quilt8

So I am not bummed that I didn't complete a project using all 27 materials. I am a bit bummed that I set a challenge and didn't reach it, but I can say for sure that if the overall goal was to simply make stuff at age 27 then I can go ahead and cross that off the list.

Rope4

I have not yet decided if I am going to set a birthday challenge for 28. Right now, I feel like I have enough challenges : Set up a new house. Landscape the front yard. Grow another garden. HAVE A BABY. Get through Paul's deployment and then the start of his residency. Figure out what my job (and my marriage!) is going to look like with a baby thrown into the mix.

Pillow

It's a little overwhleming to add something else to the pile, so for awhile, I am just going to ride this wave of adventures. Maybe on my half birthday (8/22) when the dust has started to settle, I'll come up with half of an idea and try that. In the meantime, I will be crafting up a storm as I decorate the new house. Can't wait to share those projects and rooms here.

Elise, I think this might be even more inspiring than if you had completed projects with all 27 materials. I know you have a lot of readers who look up to you (myself included!) and to read that it’s okay to let things go, to move in a different direction that is still productive and rewarding and fun, is wonderful. I have to admit, I breathed a sigh of relief as I read this post and thought, “Whew, even Elise sometimes doesn’t finish something.” You have to do what is right for you! Thanks for keeping it real!

Hi Elise, have a couple of ideas to help complete your list from ideas shared on Pinterest (just started playong with it) that might be fitting with your style of projects. First is glue. Using a clear glass vase and a hot glue gun, “paint patterns” on the glass, like rings around the diameter for instance. When the glue dries it looks like glass. As for stone/metal, I saw a photo card holder using a medium sized stone that was wrapped a few times with metal wire with a long piece of wire extending upwards with a few circles bent at the end (probably twisted around a pencil) to create a photo holder. And the last idea was using photos. Make a collage of raw photos, say over your bed, hanging them individually but collectively forming the shape of a heart.

your 27 materials posts always seemed to pop up out of the blue on blog, you were feeling the want of creating with… and so you did. if paint and fabric and (whatever it is you use to weave with) were the materials you wanted to use instead of something else… good for you. it’s refreshing to hear your natural voice.
now i am a little bummed to not see whatever awesome thing you were going to create with glitter!

Thank you for this! With just two days left in February, my “I Choose” plans have been a bit of a flop. Last night I was reviewing my list, trying to decide what I should try to complete or just start fresh in March. After reading this, I am going with the latter.
Loving your class and your frame of mind! And hooray for choosing to say no and it’s ok. 🙂

I think you have made a very wise decision. You have to be big enough to reassess your goals along the way as things, plans and ideas change and evolve. What your list did was give you direction and as you say you completed lots of creative projects. There is no way anyone should consider not completing it a failure because you didn’t tick 27 items off so you could post on the internet to people (a lot of people, but also people you know) and a lot of people you don’t know just to save face. Life with a new baby is amazing, exhausting, emotional and a big life adjustment. You need to give yourself time to enjoy all of that and your creative side is definitely going to be your new house. Take the pressure off yourself going into this amazing big adventure of parenthood. My youngest turns 7 tomorrow and I can’t believe it. She was so excited she couldn’t sleep and was still awake in her bed at 9.50pm. She goes to bed at 6.30pm and we do stories and then by 7pm she is asleep. The funny thing is she told me yesterday when I kissed her goodnight the next night I’m not to mention about her birthday because she would be too excited…tonight after stories she said “remember what I told you”….but clearly this little baby girl is so excited about her birthday. She got to open her present from Nanny and Pop who live interstate today so I’ll post those photos later today on my blog. I like to do those presents a day early so we can make a big deal out of the presents and the moment. Tomorrow it’s presents from Mummy and her brother and then Saturday my family’s (ie Granny and Aunty and Uncles presents). Now, just to upload those photos I took this afternoon. Good move on your goal girl…..all the best with the relocation soooo exciting.

Being able to let go of something that’s not working or not currently worth your time is really great, something I need to work on more.
As someone above commented, it’s nice to be given permission to “fail” every once in a while from someone who is a great inspiration.
Thank you for staying so human despite all your creative superpowers 😉 It’s so refreshing that you don’t try and uphold some facade of creative perfection, but that you let the “normal” shine through. Really wonderful. Thank you for being so authentic.

I totally agree with your mindset here; goals are for motivation and if they’re no longer motivating, it’s time to reassess. However, I’ll point out that your new home likely in olives at least half of those remaining materials 🙂

I love this post. I think it more about embracing your life at the moment. When I had my first baby I didn’t know what I would be able to handle when she was was born…it turned out to be a lot more than I thought, but I am glad I didn’t have a lot of expectations on myself and was able to enjoy that time. You never get it back.

I have found it to be so empowering to abandon a goal or project that is no longer suitable for my life. Once I decide that I’m going to do something, it can be very hard for me to decide NOT to do that thing, especially if I have told my blog readers about it. 😉 I somehow feel obligated to do it, even when it doesn’t affect anyone else.
However, when I make a conscious decision to stop doing something, I no longer feel like I’m giving up or falling short. I feel released from the self-imposed pressure to finish what I started, and it’s so freeing.
I’m sure not everyone is like us, Elise, but I totally understand how it feels to not finish this project. Good for you for abandoning that goal when it no longer made sense for you!

Wonderfully written post, Elise. Sometimes, projects don’t go as we expect–and that is the point of them. We learn more about ourselves along the way than we do just looking at a finished process. I so appreciate your honesty in this post and think you are on the right crafty track for your life right now.

I think you are one smart lady for letting this go when it wasn’t serving you. I loved the project idea and while it was inspiring you, it was cool. But the goal of the goal isn’t executing the goal to a T, is it? The real point was making different stuff and that was, most definitely, a success. I am doing my best to learn this lesson when it comes to my own goals.
And, unrelated, I keep staring at that pile of quilts photo and LOVING it! Stellar color and pattern choices.

What about 28 Firsts? First house, first baby, first time baby did…, first time you did this as a mom, ect?

Good idea on not making any goals until things have settled with the baby. I don’t know if you’ll have support from friends/family, but most of my new Mom friends felt that they didn’t really feel capable of anything until baby was 6 months old. First 6 weeks – 3 months is usually a fog. A good for but still. 🙂

Elise, what about creating an artistic ode to 28 instead of a list that complete you must? Show us how your new creations highlight your 28th year. That way you don’t have to set a direct number and you will still be creating items like the baby blankets. You made the right decision to enjoy your time with Paul and focusing on the house. Thank you for sharing your work with us and inspiring others. I can’t wait to see what you come up with for the new house and the baby. best wishes.

Second, I’ve been in a creative funk lately and not blogging as much. Loved your inspirational blog and yoga photos. You’re adorable.

Here in NH we won’t be able to begin gardening until after Memorial Day due to frosts. Not sure when your gardening season begins? If at all possible you may want to either do the front yard now along with putting the house together before baby Cripe arrives or put it to the back burner for a while.
In my experience and the huge responsibility I felt to our child. I didn’t get back to my poor perennial beds for several years! I was your age when our daughter was born and had my 29th cake n’ candle a few months after her birth. We’ve been so busy on “life’s wave” it’s as though it was all a blink! Enjoy that family first and foremost as it’s a blip in the bigger picture of life.
At 44 I’ve learned we make plans and GOD laughs!

I don’t comment a whole lot on here, but this post really resonated with me. I feel like people can be very critical of others who set goals and don’t reach them, but I have a lot of respect for people who can say “you know what? This isn’t working for me anymore”. Thanks for such an inspiring post 🙂

    Hi Elise,
Thank you for your daily inspiration! I absolutely love your blog! I really loved the rope plant hangers you made-such a fresh look to something so retro! Could you tell me how you planted your plants in pots without drain holes? Did you use only soil or add rocks to the base? I can’t wait to give this project a try. Thanks! Alicia
