Quilt

This little quilt came together faster than expected. I guess when your husband deploys and your day job hits a lull, craft time goes through the roof. I was happy for the sewing distraction this past week and am so thrilled with the finished quilt. Really, this one is my favorite.

Quilt4

I ended up using three yards of patterned fabric for the top (1/4 yard of 12 different patterns – more information on the patterns can be found here). I had 16 rows of 21 triangles. The equilateral triangles were about 4.5 inches tall. The finished quilt is about 60×45 inches.

Backside

I lined the quilt with 100% cotton batting and backed it in gray. I machine-stitched all the pieces together along every diagonal line with pink thread. It took awhile, but this part is always my favorite. The stitches give it such definition. Every time I share a quilt on the blog, I get asked if I use a walking foot – I do not. I looked into one, but didn't find an attachment for my machine. I gather that a walking foot would help me manhandle the fabric through the machine and keep my lines straight, but after seven machine stitched quilts, I still see no need for it. I am happy with my imperfect lines. 🙂

Quilt2

I bound it all together with striped pink and white fabric (brand unknown – so sorry! I know it's a Japanese fabric). I love the striped binding so much.

Binding

This was the first time I tried machine stitching on my binding instead of hand stitching. I didn't do it to save time (though it was a HUGE time-saver). I did it because I think the machine stitching will hold up better. I imagine a baby quilt is going to need to get washed much more often than my other quilts and I want something I can throw in the machine and not worry about the stitches falling out.

I love the invisibility that comes with hand-stitching, but I hate that I can never seem to secure the binding perfectly. I don't want to have to "fix" a blanket that it meant to be used constantly.

Binding2

I followed this tutorial for machine stitching the binding. I am totally happy with the look on top and 90% happy with the look on the back. On the top side, my stitching is pretty clean. On the backside, it goes off the border more than a few times. Not a deal breaker, but something I'll work to perfect on my next few quilts.

Quiltlovemama

And, here's the sappy part… instead of signing my initials on the backside, I added a label with a note for baby girl. I used embroidery floss to "sign" on a piece of twill and then used a satin stitch on the machine to hold the twill in place on the front of the quilt. The satin stitching goes through to the backside because I added it last.

Quilt3

So that's it! A quilt for the little one to add to her two knit blankets. Annnnd, I am done(ish) on making stuff for baby. Creative energy for the next few months will be focused on setting up our new place and getting her nursery ready. At least, that is the plan.

Anticipating your questions : here is a tutorial for how I put together quilts. This is my sewing machine. The list of fabrics I used is here. More questions? Please ask in the comments.

This is absolutely beautiful. I don’t normally take the time to comment on the blogs I follow but this beauty of a quilt definitely deserved some love sending from here in the UK!
All the best with your pregnancy. I look forward to following your blog and watching your little girl grow.

I’ve actually only ever done my binding this way. I was intimidated the other way and usually time is an issue for me as all my quilts have been gifts. I have two quilts in progress that I was going to try to do the binding the “right” way because I’ll actually have a few months to complete the binding. We’ll see.

This quilt is gorgeous, Elise! I love the colors and the contrast of the gray backing with the stripe binding.
I have noticed if I do a machine binding I try to make my binding strips just slightly wider than normal, that way when you fold it over the edge, there is a little more fabric to work with. It’s such a time saver and much more durable, like you said.

I love the colors! The little tag made me teary. So sweet.
I used the machine sewn binding, but used a zig-zag stitch or another decorative stich on the top-side. It made it look more intentional to be over the lines in the back and less like I just missed. Just an idea.

This is lovely – the colors are perfect! I find that quilting is SO therapeutic! I think it’s the tactile experience of working with soft fabric combined with the knowledge that when I’m done, I’ll have a gift that will comfort one of my loved ones through THEIR hard times!

Elise, this quilt is gorgeous. Apologies if you’ve already answered this – do you pre-wash your quilting fabrics or do you just wash after you quilt and cross your fingers? So happy for you and your growing family!

I absolutely LOVE how it turned out!! So beautiful and the embroidery is the perfect touch!! My only two cents on the binding is to use a clear thread on the side you can’t see — if you go off the edge, your eye won’t be able to see it! I’ve used it many times that way and love the result!! 🙂

Just a note about binding…I learned after 15 years of sewing that people who have “perfect” looking binding are using a “binding foot”. Most machines have an attachment you can order for $20-30 which will feed the binding through and stitch it on straighter than you can by eye. Seems totally worth it to me if you do much sewing…

hey Heather! Usually I wash the fabrics first, but for this one, encouraged by the lady at the quilt shop, I sewed BEFORE washing. I just pulled the quilt out of the dryer (with my breath held) and it looks awesome. Puckered and handmade. 🙂 So I think I am sold on washing POST sewing for the future.

Oh, this is pretty! I’ve never made a quilt so I don’t know my way around binding one, but I thought I had come across ideas for invisible machine stiching for binding … it was something along this line, I think: http://www.redpepperquilts.com/2009/11/binding-tutorial.html
Maybe one of your fabulous readers has tried it 🙂 Memo: Pick up that book by Denyse Schmidt and try to make a quilt, too, someday!

Everything about this quilt is just perfect. Your top stitching looks fabulous to me (maybe you didn’t show us some bad spots 🙂 Love that you machine stitched. (I didn’t for a baby quilt and I think it held up pretty well but I don’t know how much she washed it.) The label is just perfect. It’s sweet how you signed it, but probably more practical too–again for the multi-washing issues. Just beautiful. Amazed you are even thinking about crafting w/ the move on your plate and packers on the horizon. Hope all goes well. Can’t wait to hear about your progress.

Lovely quilt – and I always like a striped binding! One interesting variation you might like to try is to cut the stripe on the bias, so the stripe is slanted. It still looks crisp, but different!

I think these triangles are different shapes than the triangles on your tutorial. I like them better. Can you share how you cut them out? 🙂 Pretty please?

Wow, you move fast!! Love the signature, so darn sweet. We sourced and purchased and awesome quilt (the only one we own) for our second son. He ended up being a vomit baby (nothing was safe) so I avoided using the quilt with him because it cost us so much and I wanted it to be an heirloom. Wrong thing to do. It will get a lot of washing! And a lot of love! = )
