Babychair

This rocking chair is a family heirloom in more ways than one.

In August, Paul's great aunt passed away. Weeks later, Paul's mom texted to see if we wanted her wooden rocking chair. "Tell her sure!" I said. "Tell her we'd love it for baby Cripe."

It was sort of a joke, but sort of serious. Baby Cripe was not on the way yet, but eventually he or she would be, right? We could use a rocking chair then.

Babychair6

On Thanksgiving, because baby Cripe is actually on the way, Paul's family brought it down and I was pleased to find out that it was small and actually comfy. This wasn't going to be a "just for show" rocker, it was one I'd actually enjoy sitting in. The cover was old and dirty and desperately needed to be replaced, but the wood was great.

While I was up in Sacramento for the holidays, I picked up some black and white striped fabric at Ikea that I knew would match our headboard if we ended up keeping the chair in our bedroom but was also generic enough that it could work in any of our rooms (including baby's which will be primarily black and white regardless of gender). Plus, let's get real, "black and white" is more or less the motto in our house.

I took apart the old cushions and used them as templates to re-cut the new seat and back covers. It was a much easier project that I had geared up for. So easy that I decided to take them a step further and add wooden buttons to finish off the look.

AND HERE IS WHERE THINGS GET LUCKY : For a few years, I have had some wooden buttons that my grandpa (the same grandpa that painted a portrait Paul and I) had carved for me and my mom. The buttons had never made it into a project because I had no idea what sort of project would be special enough for them (and I am not a good enough knitter to make a cardigan).

So now baby has a rocking chair that's been in Paul's family for decades, includes details from his or her Great Grandpa and has handmade cushions made by Mom. Sounds like a winner. 😉

Such a gorgeous heirloom. It’s awesome that you have so many family members as a part of that chair! Glad to hear the recovering was easier that you expected – I’m hoping to do a similar project and am feeling a smidge intimidated.

It’s lovely, you will spend many hours in it once the baby comes. Good job on the sewing! I’ve been sewing since I was about 11 so a very long time and I will say, just keep at it, every project gets easier!

The fabric is awesome. The cushions look great! I pinned it for future reference. No one in our family did rocking chairs and I love them. I plan on finding one someday to refinish. I am REALLY excite to see how you decorate Baby Cripe’s nursery.

I love it! Inspired me to finally find fabric and make a cushion for my rocking chair that my mom gave me after my first baby — my dad had bought it for her after she had me (her first child).
    Love love love it!

Was it really that easy? I’ve got my grandpa’s rocking chair in my bedroom, but the cushions in no way match. I’ve wanted to recover them, but my mom said it was hard for her to find those cushions 20 years ago in the first place. The fact of possibly not finding a replacement if I mess up has kept me from trying. But if it is pretty easy, I might just have to try.

it really was. BUT keep in mind, I have sewed many pillows and have experience recovering cushions. I do not know your sewing level, but I am sure ease is relative. 🙂 I hope you are able to get yours recovered!!

Love the rocking chair & cushions – I love all the “family” in the project and as an heirloom to begin your baby’s life in your family. I also have a special rocking chair that was my sister’s – she passed away when I was 16… We also made cushions and used it when ours were little ones and it now has a special place by the fireplace. I love things that are comfy and hold memories!

Could you leave the existing covers and make a cover to cover those? That way it wouldn’t matter if you messed up because the originals would still be in tact. Just a thought!

I wondered if you are going to blog about Paul´s 30th birthday. What did you do? Did you have any surprises for him?

I am not going to blog about it! I did not take very many photos… maybe two? We went to dinner and The Hobbit with a friend of his the night before and then stayed at another friends for the night. On his actual birthday we went out for brunch and had a big holiday dinner with a cake. I gave him a nice bottle of scotch and a sweater. pretty boring. 🙂

so very cool, a double heirloom. my mom gave me the rocker that she rocked me in when I had my son. love to rock in it and think of the generations and what they were doing/thinking/located while rocking. so very cool.

So sweet that it is a rocking chair that has been in your family. As soon as I saw this post it made me think of how I documented my son’s first year and thought maybe you would like to see the video I was able to put together from the weekly photos in our little rocking chair. It’s really a fun idea and with your documenting style you might want to try it! 🙂 Here is the youtube link (I hope that works) if you are interested. I also used the best of each of the weekly photos to hang on a banner at his party and then put all of those in a special album for him.

A simple yet elegant baby rocking chair. I still remember when I was a little kid, whenever I cannot sleep at night my mother would carry me on her arms and we then sit on our rocking chair which is made of bamboo. After only a few minutes, my eyes shut down and the next thing I knew, I was already lying on my bed. Now that I already have a kid, I really purchased a new baby rocking chair that I found on http://www.squidoo.com/baby-rocking-chair and use it to help my kid fall asleep, just like what my mom did when I was a child. It is really a big help for me and my kid.
