Mileaday2012
I am thrilled to have kept up with my mile a day running adventure this fall and I am glad that it's over.

You may remember me blogging about this in November and you've seen the daily running shoe photos if you follow me on Instagram, but I ran at least one mile every day from Thanksgiving Day to New Year's Eve. It worked out to 40 runs. Some a bit longer than a mile, but all at least one mile.

I tried this experiment in 2011 as well and really loved it, especially as the year wrapped up. This year I was excited to try again, but a bit nervous because I was pregnant and up until Thanksgiving week didn't have much energy to excercise. My plan was to just give myself permission to walk if I wasn't feeling it, but it turned out that I was able to keep running throughout. I have been so grateful for the daily motivation to get outside and stay active, especially in this busy time of year.

I definitely got slower as the days went by and my stomach grew. But, thankfully, my first trimester wrapped up well and I've felt great throughout the second. The miles this year actually felt easier than last year and I think it's because I am doing a better job staying hydrated and eating well. It's been a very good lesson on the value of taking care of myself, even after I stop being a home for this little one.

This last week was the best of the challenge because Paul has had time off and we were able to run on the bike trails up by where our parents live. I appreciate the change of scenery and chance for longer runs and much prefer having a partner to talk and run with instead of just music in my headphones. As we were finishing on the 29th, I asked Paul if he thought I should end on 12/31 or run the 1st to finish off the project. He looked at me sideways and said, "Oh babe… I think you're done."

And he's right. This project is ending at the right time for my body and I'm going to be moving on to my next phase of pre-natal exercise. (Which right now will consist of long walks and – fingers crossed – daily yoga.)

Of all the goals I set and long-term projects I work on, committing to running a mile a day is definitely my favorite. For one thing – it's free. It costs me nothing to step outside and run around for ten minutes. For another, it has a set time frame. You start and you end and if you skip a day, you skip a day, but the period is pre-determined and that keeps me motivated. And last, it's mentally, physically and yep, even spiritually amazing to detach from the world for a short period of time each day and do something just for you. There is something powerful that comes from making a promise to yourself and then honoring it. That promise is what mile a day is about for me.

If you joined in this year, even just for a few days, congrats! I hope it was an inspiring and exciting challenge for you! I loved looking through all the photos on the #mileaday hashtag on instagram. If you would like to start now, I say GO FOR IT. Set a time period and just. start. moving.

technical info : all photos were taken with my iPhone which I carry in my hand on my daily runs and processed with the Valencia filter on Instagram. My shoes are New Balance Minimus (similar here) with orange laces from Target. I LOVE THEM, but take a lot of getting used to (and can cause injuries) if you are not a forefoot runner because they are so low support. I wear lululemon run crops almost every run. 🙂

I cannot recommend prenatal yoga enough, and if there is a class offered in your area specifically for prenatal yoga, TAKE IT! I had never done yoga before I was pregnant but took a prenatal yoga class (just once a week supplemented other days by my own practice at home) and loved it, both for the yoga itself and the camaraderie with other pregnant women. Even more, the focus on breathing and being aware of one’s body deserves 100% of the credit for my ability to have a natural childbirth.

Congratulations on achieving this goal! I’d love to complete it, but still struggle with running. I’m starting out Cto5k though, so hopefully I can do this along side you next year successfully 🙂

Oh, I like a mile a day a lot. I keep thinking working out takes a lot of time and going to a fitness club is so expensive. So I might start doing this for a few weeks, I’ll see how it works…

Awesome!!! You’ve encouraged me to create 30 a day challenge on my blog (commented on instagram…I’m beachmonkeys but just changed my name to jenwrightdesigns)
Your posts always encourage me. I’m so excited for your new adventure of a little one!!
Thank you for your posts and awesome fun projects. You really help me remember to stop and do something fun.
I love to crochet and havent in a while. Thanks to you projects I’ve decided to take the whole year to make a crocheted blanket instead of feeling I have to finish it in a weekend.
    Hugs!

I just wanted to thank you for this. I fell into a fitness rut this year and read about Mile A Day from another blogger. I started up mid-December and plan on continuing at least until my birthday in March. It’s not all running…lots of walking at the moment, but I started up Couch to 5k again and I am loving it. This is exactly what I needed to get myself on the path to where I need to be. So, thank you!

If you are interested, I have a prenatal yoga dvd I could pass along. I did a class through the hospital and didn’t find it challenging enough, so in my second tri, I got a dvd. I enjoyed it. Send me an email if you are interested.

Thanks so much for sharing this idea – I didn’t make in Dec. but decided for me to start and do it for the month of Jan. I was proud of myself for going out in the drizzle yesterday and getting my 1.5 mile in. Felt so much better after my run too.

Congratulations on finishing the challenge, Elise! I joined in this year and am so glad I did. I loved documenting my runs with Instagram, and seeing the pictures of everyone else who joined in each day was all the more inspiring. What’s even more wonderful to me is that some of my friends have decided to take on the challenge this month after seeing my daily photos – how amazing to think of the knock-on effect your challenge has had around the world!
So, thank you so much for the inspiration and comradery you have provided : )

that is very kind! thank you! I have not had much luck with excercise DVDs… for some reason I stall out while they are on or lack the motivation to actually get them started. 😦 I bought a prenatal yoga book that arrives tomorrow!! My plan is to go through that and create a short collection of poses I can run through each day. We will see how it goes… 🙂

Ahhhh… yes. I never got to writing about that. And now I do not do them. I was going pretty well at it but then lost steam when I felt awful. I can check with Paul and see if he could help write a post. He is the much more TRX focused person in our family at the moment. 🙂

I wanted to do a mile a day, but the temp drop dramatically and I got sick. 😦 But I did sign up for a 5k in Feb. and I am ready to run, even if it has to be on the treadmill. By the way, I live in NORTH Wisconsin!! Ha ha, so when I say the temp dropped, it like really dropped! lol. Why in the world I’m signed up to do this “Fridged 5k” is beyond me. 😉
    I love your pics!!

I’m not running. It’s usually too hot here in for me to run. I had a heat stroke a few years ago and now if I get to hot I get really sick. But I am riding my excersize bike at least 1 mile every day. I might be pregnant again (lost the last one in Nov) and I’m nervously waiting to find out if I am or not.

    Elise:
I cannot praise exercise during pregnancy enough! Srsly! I exercised throughout all 3 of my pregnancies, working out a little more and a little harder each time (I even ran the Army 10 miler at the start of my 2nd trimester last year and BEAT my goal time..what?!). I also stuck to a routine of daily morning prenatal yoga (I followed this DVD: http://www.amazon.com/Yoga-Journal-Lamaze-present-pregnancy/dp/B000F6Z4L4), and I am convinced that together the running and weight lifting and yoga helped make my deliveries and recoveries so easy. (That routine may be “too easy” for you if you’re really into yoga already.)
Of course, only do what you feel comfortable doing — each of our bodies and our tolerance levels are different and that’s okay because that’s how it’s supposed to be 🙂
So a “bravo” and high-five to you! Stick with it: you will NOT be disappointed for choosing to stay in shape throughout this amazing experience. Not only will it help you feel more balanced throughout your pregnancy, but it will aid in your delivery and your recovery, and boost your mood throughout 🙂
    KEEP SWEATING! 🙂

I managed to finish the mile a day challenge, too! I came across it a few days after you started, but I still managed to do 37 days! I’m thinking about carrying on with it as best I can.
I can’t express how great it feels to start the year on a high by having just seen a goal through to completion. It makes me feel even more encouraged to set some goals for the new year.
Thank you so much for making it seem manageable and fun!

I loved doing the mile a day–it was great for my mental state, and also helped me get to know my new neighborhood in a different way, and made me get outside more in the cold city (Shanghai) than I probably would have. Thanks so much the inspiration! It was also fun to connect with friends in other parts of the world while doing it. (we used #1mile1photo as our tag). I am curious how this habit will continue/change into the new year.
Also want to recommend–even though you say you don’t like DVDs–the Be Blooma Well Prenatal DVD. (disclosure: it’s my friend’s DVD and I used to work there, but i’m not only speaking out of that bias) It features some real birth footage of women using yoga and breathing in their labor, and tips for labor as well, and it’s a challenging and inspiring workout even if you aren’t pregnant. it’s on amazon 😉
as always, it’s so wonderful how you articulate and share your process–thank you! happy new year.

So happy for you! I had my baby girl in June, 13 years ago this June. I am not even the same person I was before her because she has brought such a new level of joy to my life. Everything came in to focus in my life after having her. I’m so happy you will be able to experience the joy of motherhood! It’s like nothing else!
