I was going to save this until early next year, but I got a request to share before the start, so here we go! If you are about to embark on Project Life in 2013, WELCOME. I am wrapping up 2012 and so excited to dive into next year's album(s).

These are my thoughts moving forward on what I want to change and what will stay the same. Feel free to refer to this post from early 2012 about how I tackle Project Life on a weekly basis as well as ask questions in the comments.

What is going to change :

Plwk39detail

I am going to be working primarily from the Seafoam kit. This does not mean that I will not be adding extra embellishments. (I absolutely will.) It does not mean that I will not be adding extra paper scraps. (I will.) It does not mean that I will not use many 3×4 photos. (I will.) But it does mean that I will not really be adding too much additional paper from other manufacturers. I will be working cards from the gender neutral Baby Edition kit in once the little one joins the family. (Yep, sticking with gender neutral, even though we'll obviously know the gender. I love the yellow & gray.)

3titlepage

Out with the quote cards. Out with the "this week" arrow cards. I loved the quote cards! They were fun! But they are done! It was enjoyable to put them together for a year, but I want to use that extra pocket a week this year for photos and journaling. And no more "this week" cards because by about August, I was SO BORED of them and I plan on using more journaling cards throughout the weekly spreads to tell relevant stories. Remember, I am offering all the quote cards as a free download. They will be up on Christmas Eve.

Plweddingright

I want more photos of people! Taking more "action" shots is a goal for 2013. It's going to be difficult this spring with Paul deploying again, but we'll make up for that in the fall when our little one is growing and grinning and being an animated extra member of our family. I also hope to have Paul take 1-2 photos a week while he is deployed and then email them to me to use in our album. This is a huge request – the man DOES NOT take photos. But his life there is so important to get documented and I really hope it works for his schedule to snap a few photos for me. 🙂

Plwk20insert

I'd love to include more of the email correspondence between Paul and I. Email is our main event while he's deployed and though some of our emails are basic and some are more detailed, all are love letters of a sort because we are so far apart and craving that connection. I will most likely not show the specifics, but I'll share how I include the text into our album.

Plwk36left

I want it to be BETTER. More cohesive. More thought out. More awesome. This doesn't mean "perfect." I am still going to mess up handwriting, spell things wrong and run out of printer ink halfway through a photo but stick it in the album anyway. I can't even pretend to go for perfection on a project like this that I work on for a whole year. But "better" I can aim for. Clarifilying here because I got a comment about how difficult it will be to improve on my album with a newborn – I do NOT consider "better" to equal "more complicated." I'll be very happy if my album gets more simple, but feels more cohesive, if that makes sense. 🙂

What is going to stay the same :

Projectlifepalmsprings

I am going to use mostly Design A pocket pages again and add in other styles when necessary. I imagine that 2013 will take up three albums just like 2012 did. At this point, I will NOT be doing a seperate album for the baby. Someone brought up the excellent point that if I do it for the first baby, I have to do it for the second baby and that really makes my head spin. This is our family album and will include the whole family (and probably a few less photos of the garden and craft projects). Or maybe it will just include TONS more inserts.

Plwk27right

I will continue to use Project Life as my main documentation source. I do not do any traditional scrapbooking and rarely tackle minibooks anymore. It's just a personal preference and style change that I have joyfully embraced. You can only do what works for you. And right now, Project Life, plus a few blurb books thrown in once a year (see one and two from 2012) is more than perfect for me.

Plwk41

I plan on working on this album throughout the week again this year. That worked for me in 2012 and we'll see if it works in 2013. Again, I know my life will flip with the baby, so all I can really do is try and stay on top of this project. I am not going to worry one bit if it doesn't work or or I am struggling to find a schedule. THIS PROJECT IS JUST PAPER & PHOTOS. THE BABY IS … a BABY! Perspective is perhaps the most important ingredient in Project Life.

Plwk37insert

I plan on printing photos at home again. Yes, it's expensive to buy printer paper and ink. But it's SO EASY and makes so much sense for my schedule and current location. If I had a local photo printer that could knock it out of the park every time, I would switch. But I don't, so for now I print at home. For the record, I have an HP Photosmart 2575 and print on Office Depot semi-gloss paper.

Plwk34insert2

I plan on continuing to add inserts (especially long blog posts) just like I did in 2012. Inserts made the process more fun and creative for me and I want to use them again to tell longer stories and share more photos.

I will continue to share here on the blog on Sundays. I have to be honest – this is my least favorite part of Project Life, by far. It's a hassle and half to take the photos, resize them for the blog, and come up with basic variations on the exact same text every week. But, I have appreciated the feedback that so many of you look forward to the posts and I think the accountability factor of sharing on the blog is the #1 reason I stayed up to date with my album all year.

Plwk48detail

Overall – I am excited.

I am so inspired to start again. My current album will hold two more weeks of 2012. I am going to do 12/16 – 12/22 and then 12/23 – 12/31. I will start 2013's album on Tuesday (1/1) and each week after will begin on Sunday just like last year. I'll be sharing my 2013 title page that first week of January.

EDIT : I got a few great comments about doing my weeks Monday – Sunday and after some thought decided to go with that. It will also be easier to share on the blog the Sunday of the next week, versus the Sunday immediately following a week which is what I was doing in 2012.

Awesome, can’t believe 2013 is around the corner! One of my goals for the new year is figuring out a documentation “system” for our (soon-to-be) family. With baby due in April I need to wrap up old projects and get organized for the onslaught of photos we’ll take. And I definitely need to get a printer and print photos at home, I think that would really help get pictures OFF the computer and into our house.

Just wondering. Do you think you will be making a separate photoalbum when the baby is here? Because you will make a zillion pictures and 2 pages is not a lot then. I also use the funny things my 3 year old says, so I never forgot that and just incorporate that in the photoalbum. Wondering what your opinion is on this?

people always tried to rationalize or guilt trip me when i stated i wasn’t make each kid a seperate album. here’s my thinking on that one. with one kid, and then two, i can barely manage to stay on top of one album. why overload myself and risk giving up altogether. as sad as it may sound, i scrapbook for myself. it’s a release for me. i enjoy capturing moments & memories. realistically, i have two boys, and while i HOPE that they would want these down the road, they are going to have to pry them from my cold dead lifeless fingers for me to part with them. they are my treasures. they have baby books.. and they are welcome to visit my albums anytime they like. 🙂

Sounds very well thought out. I still have yet to make a scrapbook or record book or anything – I find my blog does that for me, between taking photos and writing about our life in Vermont.
But I do have some nice albums and photo sheets I bought at The Container Store over the summer…perhaps one day they’ll turn into albums a la Project Life.

Quick question re: resizing photos for the blog: Why and how do you resize them? I noticed that now when I click your photos, they don’t get bigger, whereas they did before.
Also, even though I’m not a scrap-booker or project life-er, I love seeing your PL updates each week!

I absolutely LOVE and look forward to your PL updates. I tried to start 2012 mid-way, but I just didn’t have the time or drive with a new baby. I’m really, really excited to start fresh for 2013 and follow and be inspired by you along the way. Thanks for all your work! You just got me really pumped up…I count it an honor to document for my family. Sometimes I make it too big in my head and become a perfectionist, but I’m more interested in getting the memories on paper.

Thanks for your awesome blog posts Elise. I found you through A Beautiful Mess & am completely in love with all of your Project Life posts. At first I thought you must be superwoman because I didn’t realize there was a Project Life kit, I thought you did everything from scratch.. haha. But then I found the kit & know that this is a fantastic project that is not completely out of my realm of doing & I’m so excited to be able to take part in it also. Thanks for inspiring me to take on Project Life for 2013. Sometimes it seems like more work than it’s worth (especially like you mentioned the tedious resizing and cropping for the blog posts) but overall I think it’s something that [everyone who reads your blog] really truly enjoys and could personally benefit from. ❤

I also want to do a Baby’s First Year one – but she was born in April this year so I don’t know if I can tackle a retrospective one and a current one. And of course, as you said, I’d have to do one for baby number 2 if we have another. Decisions decisions.

Hi! I know we’ve never met, but I’m a(n active duty Sailor and) Navy wife too. My hubby will be cruising at the beginning of the year as well, and I’ll be doing PL again. Round 3- but this time with a 1 year old. I’m excited to see your approach with a little one. I started PL in 2011, ended up documenting a pregnancy, and ended with his birth in Dec. This past year is Samuel’s first year/our family in 2012 in PL. YOU CAN DO IT!! I will be cheering you on (and looking for encouragement) during our Sailors’ deployments. Thanks again for another great blog post! 🙂

You are right, they do not get larger when you click them. This is because I have found if I size them the size of the main content column, they have the clearest image possible when seen on the blog. I do it for every single photo and have for the past few years. Not ideal, but I prefer that they are clear in the post more than that they are enlargeable. 🙂 For my PL posts, I always have one full image that is larger and can be clicked on to see it in more detail. Hope that makes sense.

I’m also thinking about what I’d like to change in 2013 and I’m so excited for Seafoam (& the quote cards). It’s going to be awesome to start the year with a kit (got Clementine half-way through this year) and I’m definitely going to make Seafoam my focus. THANK YOU FOR YOUR RAW HONESTY.
THANK YOU for blogging PL even though it’s a pain. 😉
YES; accountability is HUGE. I speak from experience. I did PL for a full year TWO YEARS AGO. The past two years were filled with… intention. With a 22yo, a 10yo and a 7yo, I need to get off of my heiney and… well…. JUST DO IT. (Like so many other things in my life!)
Thanks for offering the printer info. I think that a huge part of doing PL for me this year (BECAUSE I FULLY INTEND TO HELP MY 10YO START HER OWN PL ALBUM AS WELL – or maybe we’ll do it together which really does sound more fun) is to have an at-home photo printer.
If you could wish for a (reasonable) at-home photo printer, would you still choose yours? Would you choose something else? I’m sure that I won’t be printing larger than 4×6.
Also… if you use Photoshop to resize your photos to 3×4 I’m going to lose my mind. I’m sure you’ve shared before how you do it… can you please tell us again?
    THANK YOU SO MUCH
Keep on keepin’ on with PL, Elise – we’re inspired or we wouldn’t be on this blog ride with you. 😀
Blessings of the Season as well. 🙂

You are welcome. 🙂 I love my photo printer, but I do not know if I would recommend it. It is six years old. I am SURE there are better things on the market, but this is all I use so it is all I know. And sorry to say, but I do use photoshop to resize my photos to print both 4x6s and 3x4s. Again, I am sure there are other programs, but for me, Photoshop Elements works and gives me a lot of flexibility.

I have been doing a 12×12 PL album in 2012 and I have been making it a family album without doing anything additional for my baby who is now 3.5 months old. My friend recommended scanning the pages and shrinking them down to 8×8 and just spiral bounding that and give it to my kids. I think that’s a great idea. Although some of the text may be hard to read…

I love your idea of including cards from the baby edition in your main PL. I started PL this year because I had my second baby in Feb and wanted a way to document our life and her first year. There are so many fun things to do that it’s nice to not limit ourselves to one medium! I am so excited to be starting my third year with PL and waiting with baited breath for the Seafoam kit to show up on Amazon!! I have loved your pieces on your design process (as a designer and former project manager myself!! Totally appeals to the geek in me!)
My biggest goal that I have not met this year is to blog more and include my PL albums and other projects on my blog…any advice ???? That would make an awesome post (Please and thank you!!)

But I also love the idea of photobooks – another great, stupendous answer to the documenting question. For me now it’s Project Life and/or photobooks. Done.

Elise, you were actually part of the crowd that convinced me to try PL. In the beginning it annoyed me, because all the lovely paper blogs I followed showed no more layouts or minis but page protectors.
Over time I saw a few gorgeous examples (yours included) and it began to grow on me.
I started in October and after 9 weeks scrapped, I am very much in love with he system. Bought the dugi version of the Sea Foam edition today and can’t wait to use it. I cannot even remember when was the last time I scrapped that many pages in a few months.

I started Project Life at the beginning of 2012 and didn’t follow through. I plan on doing so this year. One thing I read on someone else’s posts about Project Life (I cannot remember who!), was that they did their week Monday through Sunday, keeping both weekend days in the same week spread. I thought that made SO.MUCH.SENSE! I will be starting mine on Monday, December 31st, as we do stay up to greet the New Year at a family member’s home, so that party will be included. Just a suggestion, as I think making my weeks Monday – Sunday will work better for our family album =)
