Pretty sure "wax into candles" is as obvious as it gets, but I'm not concerned. This was a totally fun and simple (and useful!) project. I saw a beeswax candle tutorial on Oh Happy Day last week and immediately ordered a beeswax kit from Amazon.

Candles4

I made up a bunch of eight inch tapers and a few smaller (about 2.75 inch tall) wide ones to fit in our reindeer candle holders. (Note, the color of the wax is much more accurate in these photos versus the top two.)

I was impressed with how easy the wax was to work with. I rolled the candles on our cold stone floor and was careful to roll them as tight as possible. According to the directions that helps them burn for longer.

I also loved how clean the beeswax burned and the subtle but sweet scent they put off. Totally rad. We only light tapers around the holidays, but I could totally see myself using some of the short and wide ones throughout the rest of winter and into spring. This was not a cheap project (the kit was over $30 with shipping) but I am totally pleased with how it turned out.

Candles3

Since my brother and I were little, "candle nights" as my family called them, have been a BIG tradition. We would light around 50 candles plus the tree and sit and chat about our days about once a week throughout December. As a kid it was pure magic. This is the first year we have had so many candles (it's taken me a while to build up a holiday decor box) and I am getting Paul excited about candle nights. I'd LOVE to continue this tradition with our little ones in a few years.

if you are curious, basically all of our decorations are from Target or Crate & Barrel holiday clearance with a few exceptions : those wood candle holders from Peg & Awl, and glass taper holders from CB2 a few years ago. Here is the ampersand string art tutorial.

Candle night sounds really awesome! I love the way the beeswax taper candles look! I’m curious/excited to see what you end up doing with cork! I love doing making things with cork. Actually just shared some easy ones on my blog recently. http://leonalane.typepad.com/my-blog/2012/12/quick-diy-projects-using-cork.html

    HI Elise
Congrats on the baby news. Just an idea for you about recording baby’s progress. I was planning on doing Baby’s own album on top of Project life but with feeding, no sleep and everything else involved with Baby it didn’t turn out that way. Instead when Baby achieved something I would do a separate page for him in my Project album so in years to come if they wish to have all their milestones in one album they can remove them from Project life album without any difficulty.
Hope the rest of your pregancy goes smoothly.

The candle night tradition sounds so sweet! I think that’s something awesome to do with your little ones when they come along! Candles make everything magical. Beeswax candles are fun to make, I’ve done it once or twice when I was a kid

Thank you for the ‘Candle Nights’ inspiration! Candles, Christmas lights & my kids are at the top of my favorite things list 🙂 We did this the other night as our countdown to Christmas activity of the day. I will admit that there was some grumbling and eye-rolling from my two oldest (16 & 13) and my youngest (7) couldn’t figure out how this was going to be fun… However, it was perfect! We spent 30-minutes with NO distractions (phones, iPods, etc.) just talking and laughing and remembering. It was exactly what our family needed to really get into the spirit of Christmas. The kids (all 3 of them) walked away saying ‘that was a lot more fun than I expected’! Thanks again for the idea – we are definitely going to continue this new (to us) tradition!
