When we lived in Maryland, I commuted from our apartment in Bethesda to Georgetown to work at Paper Source. In the early days, this meant I drove to the nearest metro stop (Grosvenor-Strathmore), then rode for seven stops on the red line to Farragut North where I hopped on the Circulator (a bus that ran about every ten minutes). It took about an hour each way on a good day. Eventually, I wised up and realized if I cut out the bus and walked from Dupont Circle to Georgetown, I would not only get a bit of exercise, but I spend less time dreading the wait for the bus.

Last Thursday, while we were in DC, we took the same walk from Dupont to Georgetown. It's crazy how quickly everything – even the fast paced, cutting back and forth to avoid stoplights mentality – came rushing back. At the time, the driving, parking, metro riding and bussing, I could do absolutely do without. But I totally remember that walk as a highlight of working in the city.

All photos this time around were taken
with my iPhone in the middle of a very humid, very gray day. See all photo walk
posts here.

What a fun photo walk! Until a couple years ago, I always lived within a couple hours of DC, so that was the city I got to most often. (Now it’s Philly.) But DC will always hold lots of memories for me!

I am coming round to the idea of photo walks, it’s interesting to share with others but also over time to see how things really have changed! I love it.

Walking in D.C. is something I always enjoyed. I probably walked at least 1.5-2 miles every day on my commute, even when I was 9 months pregnant! I miss the hustle and bustle of the city.

what a walk down memory lane! our last duty station was at the marine corps barracks and we lived at 15th and I NW. I also relied on the Red LIne and took it from Farragut North to Shady Grove and took a bus. great post today, Elise! xx

Very cool that you went back and documented this! I love that you are able to remember it and see it in perspective of then and now. As usual, highly inspiring!

I feel that way about the city and commuting, but at the same time I couldn’t imagine my life without. I really do love DC, even though I could see myself as a west coast girl!

I love this idea! So many memories are encoded in the spaces we frequently travel, and it blows my mind how much a commute that aggravated me every day has become something so beautiful to me now that’s in the past.

How fun!! I love the idea of doing a photo walk of your commute! And I love the metro and DC. Whenever we visited our grandma in Maryland we took the greenline from the very last stop all the way into DC. It’s the best!! I could totally ride it every day.

I’m Italian, been to Georgetown and DC last summer. I’ve been only to ONE Paper Source in my life, THAT one. So fun. I’ve even bought a couple of stamps.
