Greener

Alright. Remember last October when I shared my attempts to get my skin a bit more chemical free? I have stuck with it. And I would love to get all of my recommendations into one place.

I want to note though… don't panic. I feel like transitioning to chemical free is super overwhelming. The good news is, you can take it slow and just replace products as you run out. You can also rest assured that once you have switched, buying products is much easier. Congratulations! You have less options! In a good way! No more standing in front of a wall of stuff wondering which one is the best. And the best news, perhaps, is that you can totally just skip this post and write me off as crazy!

But this is what I'll say… chemical-free has been VERY good for my skin. Some of the products I have been purchasing cost more than I have spent in the past, but a little goes along way. And the deeper I get into this, the less product (both variety of and amount of each) I seem to need.

Skin

I shared this cheat sheet in my first post, but here it is again. It's from There's Lead in My Lipstick and I still carry it around in my wallet and check products against it. Please note, not everything I am sharing here today is perfect; a few items contain fragrance which is considered a no-no because it's not regulated. I have starred any product that has at least one ingredient on the chart. All of these products, though, have been a step in the right direction for me because they are paraben free.

Skincareeveryday

For the morning : Trader Joe's shaving lotion, Unite shampoo, Unite Conditioner, Zum Bar body soap, Kai deodorant, Pangea Organics body lotion, Josie Maran body sunscreen, Josie Maran facial sunscreen, Burt's Bees Pomegranate lip balm.

There are a few stars on this section for obscure long named chemicals, but I am pretty happy with everything here. I was very nervous to swap out my deodorant and then I made an impulse purchase and blew it. I saw that it was paraben and aluminium free (and smelled amazing) so I bought it despite the ridiculous price tag. Then later realized it does have a few toxins from the no list. The good news is it works great and it has much fewer chemicals than the Dove deodorant I've been using for years. Once this one runs out, I'll be trying the Lavanila Healthy Deodorant.

Skincaremakeup

For when I wear make-up : Tarte mascara, bareMinerals bronzer, bareMinerals blush, bareMinerals well rested, bareMinerals Pretty Amazing lip color in "courage."

I really don't wear make-up that often and when I do it's usually it's just sunscreen, a bit of bronzer, under eye powder and Tarte mascara. If I am going to something fancy, I'll add normal face powder, a bit of blush, eye stuff and lip stuff. But that's rare, folks, and my application is somewhat tragic so it's probably useless anyways. Seriously though, that mascara is fantastic. Just that and Josie Maran sunscreen and you're well equipped for life, I think.

Skincarenight

For the evening : Avalon Organics Vitamin C cleansing milk, Pangea Organics toner, Pangea Organics face lotion, Burt's Bees almond lotion, Trader Joe's organic coconut oil.

I joke to Paul that my nighttime routine involves about 15 steps (thankfully my morning rountine is super quick). My favorite part is spriting the toner. I am obsessed with the smell. The face lotion is great too. Lately, I have been trying to save my feet from complete a summer/running breakdown and so I apply a heavy coat of either Burt's Bee's almond lotion or coconut oil (on the suggestion of my friend Jessica) right before hopping into bed. I have noticed great improvement on my dry skin, but I am sure that's more from diligent application than chemical-free product.

Skincaretravel

For when I am traveling : yes to carrots body butter, yes to blueberries facial tissue + small bottles of my shampoo & conditioner.

When we take long or short vacations, I am all about keeping it simple. Love those facial tissues, but don't love the waste that would come with daily use. I use them just on trips because they are super easy to pack and include a wash, toner and moisturizer all in one. That body butter is great and not too greasy.

Weeklyskincare

For about once a week : Pangea Organics face mask, no-miss base coat, Bert's Bee's cuticle cream, Essie's ole caliente nail polish.

This mask is amazing. When I remember, I wash my face, apply it, let it sit for about 15 minutes then rise it off and use toner and face lotion as usual. I love how it makes my skin feel, and again, a little goes along way with this stuff. I have sort of given up my search for fantastic nail polish colors that don't peel off or chip (I have found some that don't chip but they don't come in awesome colors and some in awesome colors that peel). I fully believe they are out there, but right now, Essie's ole caliente is my favorite. I like to think I am helping my cause by applying a no-miss base coat on top and bottom but who knows if that's legit or not.

It should go without saying, but I am not an expert on this and I can't guarantee what will be the best product for you or your skin! I just like to share what I find. Any chemical-free favorites you'd like to share? You guys always have fantastic ideas about this stuff and I learn so much from the comments.

I love when you share things you find and love! I also love all of your posts about green skincare. I really want to go green but worry because I struggle with acne AND dry, flaky skin. And also the expense, eek. But if I introduced it one product at a time, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad.

These are all such good suggestions! I’ve been using Neutrogena Naturals facial cleanser, and while I’m not 100% satisfied, it’s a huge step in the right direction for me. I was using the Yes To Cucumbers wipes, but I agree the waste was making me a bit sad!
Once this cleanser is done, I’m switching to the Avalon cleanser you recommend. I’m also going to need to seek out a heavy-duty moisturizer for the fall/winter – my skin is SUPER dry and I’ve always used Lubriderm, but I’m hoping to find something a bit more natural that’ll still keep me from breaking out in psoriasis patches all winter long.
    Pinning this post asap!

i stopped using shampoo back in early June and my curly hair is doing great, it can get a little dry sometimes so I use Bert’s Bees Avocado Butter Pre Shampoo and it seems to do the trick. for shampoo, I am using baking soda & water and sometimes just water. For my “conditioner” I am using apple cider vinegar & water
i have thick and very curly hair, i never thought this would work for me. it takes some time to get use to. And, i never comb my hair anymore. I use to comb my conditioner through my hair with a wide tooth comb but i stopped that all together too.
going green doesn’t need to cost so much!

After experimenting since last December I finally settled on my favorite products. I use Dr. Hauschka make-up, Shikai everyday shampoo and conditioner, unscented vegetable glycerin soap from Whole Foods (I think the brand is called 365), and MyChelle facial products. The facial products took me the longest to figure out because I have super oily skin, but I use their normal/oily line and their “teen acne” face wipes. It’s annoying to use teen acne products at 26, but whatever, they work. I also use mineral fusion shine-free blotting tissues, which are great.

I’m recommending Weleda Almond Gacial Lotion as a favorite! I think it’s around $16 for a small tube but it lasts me a couple of months of daily use- sometimes twice a day 😉
We’ve also replaced our liquid soaps with Dr. Bronner’s. I love simplifying!

Love these recommendations! I’ve been trying to transition to more natural products as well. So far have not found an effective deodorant so maybe I’ll try that Lavanila that you’re going to try. I’m the same way with makeup, super simple and when I do put it on I wonder if anyone really notices! 🙂

I love the product recommendations – thanks for the update on your switch! I’ve actually stopped using shaving cream in favor of castile oil (I use Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap in peppermint: http://www.drbronner.com/DBMS/LS.htm). Aside from the soap being veggie based, biodegradable, and fair trade, it’s also helped save the lives of my razors! My blades don’t rust or dull as quickly as they did when I used foamy shaving cream brands. The soap is so tingly and you’ll feel so clean afterwards. And the smell of the peppermint is amazing. AMAZING.

Thanks for putting this in one spot! I agree that it’s tough to change everything at once, but little by little improvements really end up making a big difference.
I’ve also been trying out the Neutrogena Naturals line. It’s decent (and I think the night cream will be great when the weather makes it drier out) even though it also has “fragrance.” I use a combo of Mineral Fusion and Bare Minerals when I wear makeup (not often because I’m a wash-and-go girl). I have some dandruff issues so I use a combination of Jason anti-dandruff shampoo and Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat shampoo and conditioner, but I’m planning to try baking soda/vinegar when it runs out. I use Dr Bronner’s liquid soap in the shower and love it. I gave Toms of Maine aluminum free deodorant a shot, but smelled absolutely awful at the end of each and every day, so I’m back on Dove and a little nervous to spend $25 on something I don’t know will work well.
Something super handy I’ve discovered is the Good Guide app and web site (goodguide.com). It gives a rundown and rating for a lot of products, and also factors in the company’s environmental and social policies!

I am a big fan of the Pangea face mask. And it lasts forever. I like Weleda’s almond face cream & Yes to Blueberries face wash (though inrealized it has fragrance in it) & Burts Bees radiance night cream. Its a bit heavy butni have extremely dry skin. I put that TJs coconut oil in my green tea in the a.m.

I think one of the most difficult switches for us was deodorant. We spent a lot of money trying different kinds, and all of them were pretty awful. I was reading a post by Tsh on Simple Mom a while back, and she had suggested Arm & Hammer Essentials Natural deodorant, so we gave it a go and it’s been working wonderfully for us. We have found that the unscented kind works best (it does have a smell, though… my husband always jokes that it reminds him of Fruit Loops). When we tried one of the naturally scented kinds, we were both a bit stinky at the end of the day. So we stuck with the unscented and we both smell great all day long. I’ve also noticed a difference in the amount I sweat after having used a more natural deodorant for a long period of time, which is pretty awesome!

elise, i am so glad you took the time to write this! i’m in the process of migrating to all natural, chemical free skin care. i’ve already majorly revamped my food, household cleaners, etc… skin, hair and make-up are now. and, i’m doing it as i run out. have you heard of the skin deep database? http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/
it’s what i use to check products and it rates the effect the product can have on different bodily systems. it’s interesting. not everything is in there but the common products are. i used mary kay for years and was happy but, w/ skin being our largest organ and having a direct link to the blood supply, i don’t want to mess around. plus, i want to have this figured out when my daughter is of make-up-wearing-age (never!). 🙂
i use the berts bees acne cleanser and lotions but i don’t love them. i use acne products b/c i’m prone to oily skin and i like that they dry it out. i also am a huge fan of berts bees lip balm. i love the ultra conditioning one b/c it sort of has a glossier look when you apply it – but not sticky like gloss and still kissable. i use the yes to body butter you mentioned. my daughter uses the shampoo, conditioner and body wash. we both have sensitive skin. she also uses aveda summer products: sun care hair and body cleanser and sun care after-sun hair masque, specific for de-chlorining since she is a big swimmer and we are beach-goers. i use aveda’s smooth infusion™ style-prep smoother to tame frizz – whether i let my hair air dry or i blow dry.
you have answered questions for me on some other products to try so i am thrilled to check them out. so wish we had a trader joe’s!! thanks!

Thanks so much for sharing this! I too have been slowly replacing skin-care, as well as cleaning products throughout our house over the past two years. I’ve found a few fabulous products, and learned about some “green” but useless products along the way. A great resource that I use as a reference is EWG Skin Deep Cosmetics Database (http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/) Not only can you search for green options by product type, but you can see information about companies and products you already use. We’ve used this to replace our toothpaste and deodorant with Tom’s of Maine. Like you, not all of the products we use are 100% chemical free, but they’re a step in the right direction, and because they are more expensive I’m more conscious of the amount used which is another benefit for not only use as consumers but the environment as well!

It seems to work pretty well now at least! I checked on a random sunscreen and it listed Oxybenzone as an ingredient that is an issue (and got a 2 for health, but the overall score was higher thanks to above average environment/society ratings). I make sure that I look at the reasons behind the rating, since a product with a bad ingredient(s) get a boost if the company is very committed to fair labor and environmentally friendly practices (also important to me). It generally lists out all ingredients and notes any that are questioned even a little bit. Sometimes it’s hard to pick (do I get the thing with fair labor but one mildly concerning ingredient, or no concerning ingredients but a track record of labor violations), but at least I’m choosing because I know those things.

I’m a little obsessed with this deodorant from The Body Shop: http://www.thebodyshop-usa.com/body-products/deodorant/deodry-dry-effect-deodorant-fresh-floral-stick.aspx It has some mixed reviews, but I think if you go into it knowing it doesn’t have an anti-perspirant it can change your expectations. I was thinking of trying the Lavanilla next, but I really LOVE the way this one smells and wears through the day. And it’s only $5 AND available at Sephora. Too easy!!!

No: Animal Testing, Artificial Colors, Parabens, Phthalates, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or Sodium Methyl Sulfate, but I just noticed it does have Dimethicone? and a few other toxins on the list 😦 bummer.

It comes in different tins which you can reuse for other things, storage for buttons or pins or crafty stuff. They are very collectible.
It’s a light cream, and serves more than one purpose, so it really cleans off that cosmetics shelf and the screw lid and lightweight tin means it’s ideal for travel, nothing to break and no leaks.
Check out the London Buses tin! They have a Liberty Stars and Stripes too.
No affiliation etc etc, it’s just a seriously nice product at a good price with no nasties in it.

I’ve switched to natural for mostly everything over the last few years. Some of my favorite products are Dr. Bronner’s peppermint soap (I use the bar because I couldn’t get the hang of the liquid soap – Elise, maybe you would find the bar soap less drying? I’m not sure how different they are), Alba Botanica acnedote deep pore wash (at 25 I suffer from acne on my chest and back, and using this in the shower helps – I find it too drying for my face, though), Everyday Coconut body lotion (I also like Everyday Shea), and ShiKai Borage SPF 15 facial moisturizer.
My problem is deodorant. I haven’t come across a natural one that includes antiperspirant, and that is what I really need. Does anyone know if one exists?
