Greener

Alright. Remember last October when I shared my attempts to get my skin a bit more chemical free? I have stuck with it. And I would love to get all of my recommendations into one place.

I want to note though… don't panic. I feel like transitioning to chemical free is super overwhelming. The good news is, you can take it slow and just replace products as you run out. You can also rest assured that once you have switched, buying products is much easier. Congratulations! You have less options! In a good way! No more standing in front of a wall of stuff wondering which one is the best. And the best news, perhaps, is that you can totally just skip this post and write me off as crazy!

But this is what I'll say… chemical-free has been VERY good for my skin. Some of the products I have been purchasing cost more than I have spent in the past, but a little goes along way. And the deeper I get into this, the less product (both variety of and amount of each) I seem to need.

Skin

I shared this cheat sheet in my first post, but here it is again. It's from There's Lead in My Lipstick and I still carry it around in my wallet and check products against it. Please note, not everything I am sharing here today is perfect; a few items contain fragrance which is considered a no-no because it's not regulated. I have starred any product that has at least one ingredient on the chart. All of these products, though, have been a step in the right direction for me because they are paraben free.

Skincareeveryday

For the morning : Trader Joe's shaving lotion, Unite shampoo, Unite Conditioner, Zum Bar body soap, Kai deodorant, Pangea Organics body lotion, Josie Maran body sunscreen, Josie Maran facial sunscreen, Burt's Bees Pomegranate lip balm.

There are a few stars on this section for obscure long named chemicals, but I am pretty happy with everything here. I was very nervous to swap out my deodorant and then I made an impulse purchase and blew it. I saw that it was paraben and aluminium free (and smelled amazing) so I bought it despite the ridiculous price tag. Then later realized it does have a few toxins from the no list. The good news is it works great and it has much fewer chemicals than the Dove deodorant I've been using for years. Once this one runs out, I'll be trying the Lavanila Healthy Deodorant.

Skincaremakeup

For when I wear make-up : Tarte mascara, bareMinerals bronzer, bareMinerals blush, bareMinerals well rested, bareMinerals Pretty Amazing lip color in "courage."

I really don't wear make-up that often and when I do it's usually it's just sunscreen, a bit of bronzer, under eye powder and Tarte mascara. If I am going to something fancy, I'll add normal face powder, a bit of blush, eye stuff and lip stuff. But that's rare, folks, and my application is somewhat tragic so it's probably useless anyways. Seriously though, that mascara is fantastic. Just that and Josie Maran sunscreen and you're well equipped for life, I think.

Skincarenight

For the evening : Avalon Organics Vitamin C cleansing milk, Pangea Organics toner, Pangea Organics face lotion, Burt's Bees almond lotion, Trader Joe's organic coconut oil.

I joke to Paul that my nighttime routine involves about 15 steps (thankfully my morning rountine is super quick). My favorite part is spriting the toner. I am obsessed with the smell. The face lotion is great too. Lately, I have been trying to save my feet from complete a summer/running breakdown and so I apply a heavy coat of either Burt's Bee's almond lotion or coconut oil (on the suggestion of my friend Jessica) right before hopping into bed. I have noticed great improvement on my dry skin, but I am sure that's more from diligent application than chemical-free product.

Skincaretravel

For when I am traveling : yes to carrots body butter, yes to blueberries facial tissue + small bottles of my shampoo & conditioner.

When we take long or short vacations, I am all about keeping it simple. Love those facial tissues, but don't love the waste that would come with daily use. I use them just on trips because they are super easy to pack and include a wash, toner and moisturizer all in one. That body butter is great and not too greasy.

Weeklyskincare

For about once a week : Pangea Organics face mask, no-miss base coat, Bert's Bee's cuticle cream, Essie's ole caliente nail polish.

This mask is amazing. When I remember, I wash my face, apply it, let it sit for about 15 minutes then rise it off and use toner and face lotion as usual. I love how it makes my skin feel, and again, a little goes along way with this stuff. I have sort of given up my search for fantastic nail polish colors that don't peel off or chip (I have found some that don't chip but they don't come in awesome colors and some in awesome colors that peel). I fully believe they are out there, but right now, Essie's ole caliente is my favorite. I like to think I am helping my cause by applying a no-miss base coat on top and bottom but who knows if that's legit or not.

It should go without saying, but I am not an expert on this and I can't guarantee what will be the best product for you or your skin! I just like to share what I find. Any chemical-free favorites you'd like to share? You guys always have fantastic ideas about this stuff and I learn so much from the comments.

I’m curious about your “no shampoo/conditioner” routine. Does your hair frizz at all without conditioning?

Definitely check out Acure organics! They have an amazing line of skincare products that have gorgeous packaging and are affordable too. Also, I will never, ever buy another line of natural haircare products. Their shampoos and conditioners are great, and everything is clean! For nail colors — have you checked out RGB? I just started using their colors, and so far, no chips or peels!

Hey Elise, I just signed up for goodebox which is a monthly sample service that provides healthy/eco/green makeup and skincare samples. I thought it might be a good way for me to try to incorporate greener products into my routine. I’ll have to let you know how I like them once my first box arrives. I have picked up that jar of coconut oil WAY too many times. Next time, I’m taking it through check-out! Thank you for that little nudge. These are great suggestions. We phased out chemicals since watching the documentary “America the Beautiful” – I highly recommend. Also, I’m a big fan of the crystal deodorant, but it’s such a personal thing…good luck on your quest + be well!

I have been reluctant to look at what my ‘go to’ beauty products have in them. Each item has at least three! Very good tip, to do one product as it runs out. Otherwise it is super overwhelming! Off to make my baby steps.

Huge bummer. 😦 I sweat a lot and the only natural deodorant I’ve tried (Tom’s of Maine) did not work at all. I’ll keep looking, and maybe I’ll switch to a more natural deodorant with antiperspirant for now- as you said with your switches, at least it would be a step in the right direction.
I also forgot to mention how refreshing it was to see how little makeup you wear! I don’t wear it daily either and feel overwhelmed when I see people’s elaborate daily routines. Glad I’m not the only one who saves it for special occasions. 🙂

Thank you so much for this post!!
I have been inspired to switch up some of my products. I just some Pangea Organics, and was happy to see it is a local product for me. I am also going to try some of the Dr. Hauschka products. I am very interested in switching to a deoderant…but will read through everyones recommendations before I try one!!
    Thanks Again!

I’m still in the process of switching over my beauty routine to be 100% natural, but here are a few products I’ve tried so far:
Weleda Rose Deodorant – This is a spray-on deodorant (not antiperspirant). Even though I did sweat, the odor was definitely nonexistent. I would prefer a roll-on, but for now this works. Sometimes I do cheat and use my regular Dove for important times where I want to ensure I’m not stinky or sweaty. I will be trying Soapwalla Deodorant Cream next.
Avalon Organics Volumizing Rosemary Shampoo and Conditioner – These are nice. They smell a little too herbal for my tastes, but they seem to do the job. I was my hair every other day with these two. I will probably try something new after they run out.
Juice Beauty Oil-Free Moisturizer – Love this! Smells vaguely like grape juice and is nice and light. This one is a keeper. It also comes in a glass bottle, which means it is recyclable! Yay!
Coconut Oil – I slather this all over my body after I shower each day. It’s so simple, yet so effective. Also a keeper.
Phoenix Botanicals Wild Rose Lip Balm – This is a really nice lip balm. It doesn’t really have a scent, but it is very moisturizing. The tube is biodegradeable, too, which I love.
I will also be trying soon:
    Juice Beauty Blemish Clearing Cleanser
Apple Cider Vinegar as a facial toner
    Alima Pure Mineral Foundation
    Alima Pure Shimmering Eye Shadow
    Jane Iredale Eye Liner Pencil
I would love to hear recommendations for mascara, too!

I love your post Elise! I’ve also been working this past year on re-vamping my products too. I have to penny pinch, and but I’ve found that you do not need as many products when it is natural. And my hair does not need to be washed as often either.
I’ve fallen in love with tarte mascara and have been a fan of bareminerals products for years.
I’ve been looking for natural deoderants and have a few more options now, after reading this post. A few of my friends have been making their own deoderant and sunscreen (found on pinterest) and they say they will never stop using it. I think that I will give them a try, once I’ve used up my current one. I’ll re-use the deoderant container.
I’m not sure if you have rocky mountain soap in the states, but ALL of their products are natural. I use their body butter for dry feet, acne stick, lotions and soaps.
For the shower I use green beaver mint products and they tingle as you use them. For shaving, I use peace or Dr. Bronner castille soap. And it’s true, my razor lasts a lot longer now.
The best hydrating, non-oily lotion I have found is Weleda sea buckthorn hand lotion. A little goes a long way.

more on lavanilla deodorant – i have two friends who use it, one of whom swears she is “sweaty” and it works for her. i think it’s just a personal body chemistry thing – we just have to keep trying til we find something that works for each of us. will add the A&H Essentials line to my growing collection next and see how it goes! 😮

Thanks for posting! I’m going to try Trader Joe’s shave gel ASAP. I’ve been using Kiss My Face. It’s fine, but I don’t LOVE it and I think it’s a little pricey.
Also, if you want to cut down your night routine, try olive oil as a makeup remover/cleanser. It’s wonderful! Even gets off waterproof mascara and won’t clog your pores. It can be used for a moisturizer too, but I don’t want to smell like olive oil so I use coconut oil instead. 🙂
    Great post!

Hi! Thanks for posting this! Sorry I’m a little late to the comments but I had a couple questions! First, did you try any of the “discovery” (smaller size) Pangea products before ordering a larger size? Second, I see a lot of discussion above about aluminum and antiperspirants. Do you find that the kai deodorant, even without that, still keeps you pretty dry and sweat-free (or at least clean smelling 😉 ) on a day when you’re maybe running around or might be outside a lot? Thanks!

hey! I think I just dove in with some of the Pangea products and got samples of others. I found them via an old sample sale site so the prices were reduced and I felt good about trying them. I am really happy with the Kai. That first day was strange, it took me awhile to get used to the different scent and texture, but I really love it now… even on heavy sweat days. 🙂

I’ve been turned onto a great nail polish company that is eco-friendly – I got a manicure at a 4 Leaf Resort a few weeks back. It was very thick (I chose a glitter polish and it took only ONE coat), it doesn’t smell much at all, and the great thing – it lasted about 4-5 times longer than any other polish I’ve ever tried. http://www.bynubar.com

I love your green skincare posts! Tarte is the best mascara i have ever used, and mascara is the only makeup i ever wear. I’ve been using the Dr. Bronners peppermint bar soap. And a face and body acne scrub on my face from Alba. And i also use the yes to wipes when traveling. The toughest switch was deodorant. Arm & Hammer smelled nice, but i got a giant ingrown hair in my pit! So i’ve been with Tom’s for about 5 months. Tom’s has an anti-perspirsnt with naturally derived aluminium so that may be a good compromise for some. I’ve been on the lookout for Dr. Harushka deodorant because Martha uses it and i bet she’s a researcher! But havent seen it in any stores. I’m currently trying the “no poo” curly girl thing and while i love the curls, my hair looks filthy only using conditioner (Giovanni Argan Oil). I’m not sure how much longer it will take my hair to adjust, its been about 3 weeks now. The homemade washes suggested above sound great- will definitely be trying those! Thanks Elise!

I totally agree, the Josie Maran SPF in seriously fantastic. I splurged on the big 4 oz. bottle (I wear it everyday) and it’s lasted about 5 months.
Great post, I found though a link. I love green skincare.
For paraben and fragrence free shampoo, conditioner and body wash, I have been using the 365 line from Whole Foods. Husband & I share it, so it’s nice to not have too many girly products in the shower and it’s cheap, making my splurges more justified.

Just a note….I just moved to Germany (high five to military wives!) and noticed the deodorant from The Body Shop was on sale. Buy 2 get 1 free. That makes it around $3 a pop! I don’t need three bars right now, but maybe that price would entice you to try it out?
Also, just a thanks for posting about this. Your decision to switch over to natural products seemed so effortless and cool (as opposed to confused and afraid of getting the wrong thing/not liking the new product) so when my shampoo ran out this week I grabbed a natural replacement. Thanks for the nudge to do better for myself and my fam. : )

I just arrived at this post from an old shutterbean link. It’s terrific — thanks for the great suggestions!
I have been looking for the right natural deodorant for years and have tried just about every brand that whole foods carries 🙂 A few months ago I read about Soapwalla Deodorant Cream and can’t speak highly enough about it. It’s a little strange to apply — it is really a cream and you put it on with your fingers. But hands-down the most effective (nice smelling and not too sweaty) stuff that I have ever tried. I’m finishing up my second tub and it works just as well as the first day.

Hi Elise! I know this is an older posting…but thought I’d try asking my question here anyway.
First – thanks for the natural skin care posts! I read them ages ago, and when I recently made the decision to switch to greener/natural skin products (as my current ones run out), I immediately thought of you and your recommendations. I am loving the ones you have suggested so far, but wondering if you have any shave product recommendations. I live in Canada, but shorts/skirts season will be upon us soon and my pale, stubbly legs would appreciate a recommendation if you have one!

In the latter, I use a lot of natural products. But I still have some skin care products that are a mixture of chemical knowledge. It does not use chemicals, then 100% sure in the beginning. We face may look not so good as it might be fine, but if the first condition for a while, your face, it will be very good and I am still in fine condition. I have some cream with chemical compounds.
