27MATERIALSPLANTS

Driftwoodside

As mentioned last week, I am finally getting our bedroom decorated. I am so ready to wrap up this room, figure out a few more details in Paul's office area and call this house done – just in time to move again in ten months. 😉 I'll share the whole room early next month (when I hopefully have it "ready"), but in the meantime, this is one of the projects I created for the wall above our DIY chevron headboard. Am totally considering it one of my three "just for fun" projects. And it was.

Driftwoodinspo

It was inspired by this image in a recent West Elm catalog. I loved the natural look of the twisted wood and thought something more organic would be a fun contrast to the graphic headboard. I didn't have a piece of twisted wood, but I did have some leftover driftwood that didn't make it into my wreath. To hold the wood pieces together I just attacked them with a staple gun. (Yep – you can totally see the staples from up close, which I know would bother some. Me, not so much.)

Driftwood

It was more difficult to put together than expected. But tons of staples helped. (To prove to Paul it wouldn't break apart on top of us in the night I had to shake it for a few minutes. Pieces kept falling off and I kept stapling them back on. Thankfully, it's pretty sturdy now.)

Driftwood2

I added two little hanger triangles to the backside and hung it up with two nails. To embellish it, I added five air plants, picked up at our local nursery.

Airplant

The unofficial theme for this bedroom is "plant paradise." (No, seriously.) I have a ton of potted plants that will sit all over the place, but I was excited to work some air plants into the mix (sounds like they are super easy to care for… just take them down and soak them in water once a week).

I'm stumped though for what to put all over the rest of the walls. We are dealing with a gigantic space, which is awesome, but sort of why I've spent the past six months mulling over ideas instead of acting on them. We'll see what develops…

ps : wall color is Valspar's beach blanket.

This is project 7 of 27. I am attempting to complete 27 craft projects using 27 different materials before I turn 28 on 02.22.13. You can follow my progress here on the blog or on pinterest. Birthday challenges are my favorite. You can see the 26 Projects I completed while 26 here and the 27 materials I have used so far here.

Plant paradise is a great theme. I’ve been longing to have a bathroom big enough (and with enough light) to do a plant paradise bathroom, full of ferny type things and mother of pearl tiles. Ah well – I can dream!

This project turned out great! I love that you saw something you liked in a magazine and just went for it on your own. I know in reality that isn’t such a huge deal, but I admire your “let’s do this” attitude!

How about hanging some kind of canopy to lower the ceiling? Could look horrific. You might just rock it though. 🙂

This is so much cooler than the air plant my grandma used to have. Of course, I thought it was neat when I was a kid, but it was an air plant in a seashell stuck to the fridge with a magnet. Haha.
Also, I’m curious how the email boundaries are working out for you!

I love how you saw something and it inspired you to create it. I love fun projects like this. Thanks for sharing. I am tempted now to find some air plants myself and create something. I love it Elise!

Once again, a brilliant idea! I really love the colour of the driftwood against the blue stripe. This gets me thinking…

that’s so cool! loved seeing your progress on twitter and instagram. i imagine this would be great on an outdoor patio area as well. i thought you could just mist air plants, which may be easier than taking them down. but don’t take my word for it – i’m sure you’ve done far, far more research!

I actually think yours is prettier than the one you copied it from. Cool idea!

It looks beautiful on top of the light blue stripe and above the black and white headboard! Can’t wait to see what else you come up with for the room. I usually get so overwhelmed I never finish decorating (not exaggerating- I lived at my last apartment for 25 months and never finished!) so I’m super impressed by your fortitude! 🙂

This looks awesome! I’ve never really looked at air plants before… I think I’ll be taking a trip to the nursery to see what sort of cool ones there are and try and come up with some cool ways to display them! Great use of the extra drift wood though!

Just gorgeous, and goes so well with the colour that you chose!
I know all about moving constantly as well. I’m just hoping we get to stay in our current home for at least a few years this time…

Elise, let me suggest a product that holds like crazy-I have even used it to hold large tiles on the wall-so it’s definitely not going to come apart. It expands slightly as you apply it, so go easy-a drop on each driftwood piece would be plenty. It’s called Gorilla Glue. I have purchased it in the paint section at Home Depot. Love your blog!

    So awesome! I love this.
Before even seeing this post, I actually crafted up something almost exactly like this. Instead of glue, I just wrapped the sticks together with Jute String and Hemp Thread. It works perfectly!

I love this concept, and the comparison between the shiny colour shade and visual head board and the organic plant/wooden walls clinging is fantastic too!
