Basil

There is a pesto pizza in our near future…

Edited to add : Don't worry! I didn't just dig up those plants to make one batch of pesto! I trimmed them using the healthy herb trimming techniques shared in this great article.

I have basil envy!!! A friend of mine lives in Tennessee and has the most amazing basil plants. She makes basil jelly that is SOOOO delicious! You might end up with enough crop to do something similar.

Awesome! Pesto rules. Do you use a mortar and pestle to make it? I was thinking, it might be cool to make your own cheese for one of the pizzas! Maybe some mozzarella or ricotta?

Ah!!! That’s amazing. My poor lone basil plant is so sad right now, I need to read the herb resources you posted earlier to help it along 🙂

Hey Elise– did you know that you can actually not pick the whole plants and instead just pluck the big leaves? Also, another trick someone told me– to encourage leaf growth, pinch off any blooms you see forming! I am totally jealous– I kept telling my husband it was too early to start basil, but he didn’t believe me. Well, now we have no basil…. YET! I’m still hoping we can plant some seeds next weekend or the first weekend in June. Until then– so jealous of you!

Hey Jessika, I read this article : http://skinnygourmet.blogspot.com/2008/05/ten-mistakes-new-herb-gardeners-make.html and it was crazy helpful. I have been trimming off blossoms, but as the article says its actually better to NOT just pick off the big leaves. encourages more growth that way. 🙂

I hope it is clear – I left TONS of plant. Just took off the top so each plant would continue to produce. I am new to this, but not that new. 🙂

I love the article that you posted with this blog! My parents were avid gardeners, but I never had an interest until I got married and wanted my own garden. Living in an apartment with only partial sun has been interesting for creating an indoor garden but I think the article will help. Thanks!!

Ohh! Now that is some pretty basil. I haven’t made homemade pesto before, you’ve inspired me. Every year I end up with unmanageable amounts of basil (so sad, right?) so this will motivate me to use MORE of it. 🙂
Just came over from A Beautiful Mess today & am loving your pretty blog, now I’m off to check it out some more!
