I am going to be bringing a few new features to the blog this summer – two that are photo based.

Weekly, I'll be sharing the "around here" shots, which are photos that I take mostly in my workspace throughout the week. Then every so often, I'll be sharing posts titled "photo walk : ______." These will feature photos that I took with a specific theme over a super short period of time (like 20 minutes to an hour). I love the idea of shooting just one color (photo walk : yellow) or something more general (photo walk : pattern). Not all will be in my neighborhood (this is such a fun activity while traveling) but some will.

For the first one, I put on my flip flops and headphones and walked around my block taking photos of succulents. They grow like … wildflowers here and I am in love with the various varieties and patterns they create. Sometimes it seems like they belong under the sea or back in dinosaur times. And the colors… OH THE COLORS. If we eventually settle down near the beach, I'll cover our backyard in them.

There was a time when we attempted to keep a collection of succulents here, but they died off on us one by one over a period of time (not too quickly). I still am drawn to them. Maybe someday we’ll try again but only after learning how to make our area conducive to them.

I was surprised how many photos there were, I just kept scrolling and scrolling. They are certainly prolific in your area. I love the colors and variety. Plants are amazing. Great post idea, too.

Excellent idea for a blog post! The first one is one I grew when I lived in FL, I never knew the name but it just trailed along everywhere. Third from the bottom looks like a pencil cactus.

Thank you for this great idea! I happened to do something similar last week around my yard, but it never occurred to me to do a “yellow” walk or a “pattern” walk, so thank you for shifting my perspective. If you have a moment and wouldn’t mind sharing the camera and settings you used when taking your pictures, I would appreciate some more information. Your photos are stunning 🙂

Love this “new” post type on your blog. Can’t wait to see what else you capture. Beautiful pics — I love the ice plant. It’s my favorite when I walk every day on my lunch break at work 🙂

These are fantastic, Elise! Wish I had enough light in my place to keep them alive. I loved seeing them everywhere in Italy last year. One of my strongest memories of my trip there. Can’t wait to see what your other photo journeys reveal this summer 🙂
Oh, received my stamps over the weekend. So love them! Can’t wait to get out the hot pink embossing powder!

Lovely pictures! And a great idea – I like the idea of a focused walk.
We can grow succulents over here in the north, though we grow them in pots with very free draining compost – otherwise they would rot in the rainy weather.
It’s lovely to see them growing so freely.

hey! I have a canon rebel xsi and I shot most of these with the kit lens that came with it. I kept the ISO around 100 for most because it was bright out and the aperture was usually at 5.6 or one lower. I took a TON of shots, probably at least triple what is here and looked at them all when I got home and out of the sun. 🙂

Lovely shots – there’s nothing like that here; in my head, succulents only grow in little pots on windowsills so I love seeing pictures of them running wild.

Love your ideas. I had been thinking about doing weekly series titled “Creative Space” basically documenting what I’m working on that day or what my work area looks like. I was also trying to figure out a weekly post of photos but I just haven’t been able to come up with a title. I love yours “Photo Walk” and the concept. Your pictures are beautiful..I may need a couple of succulents in my life.

Your pics are amazing! I especially love the second one, with the red rimmed leaves… The colours are amazing! I’ve been debating whether to start a cactus garden or grow succulents instead… I love cactuses, but the colours on succelents are amazing as well. I’m just not sure if they’d survive too well here.

Hi Elise! You said that for most photos you shot with your kit lens, what other lens did you shoot with for these?
