I downloaded the Instagram app and started taking snapshots of my daily life while I was in New York visiting with my girlfriends shortly after Paul deployed. On the day Paul came home, I had taken 601 shots. To keep from going crazy that morning, I uploaded all of them to Blurb and then used about 550 of them to make a 230 page 7×7 book.

TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY PAGES.

It arrived while we were on vacation. And it's awesome.

Blurb will auto-fill all the photos for you, but I wanted to create little grids and I wanted a say over what pictures took up a full page, so I took the time to arrange it all myself. It took a few hours and I mostly just followed a chronological order.

Instead of agonizing over photo placement, I just picked my favorites to be full page images and other detail shots to set in a 2×2 grid. On Saturday, after we got home, it was on the doorstep. I opened the package and wrote allllll over it with a black pen.

Bookintro

I didn't think at all about where the text would go or what I would say. I just paged through and wrote when I had something to add. I used an American Crafts Slickwriter to write and that dried well even on the glossy pages.

Some times I just wrote notes about the photos, other times I wrote text about how I was feeling.

This book is my photo diary of a full life while Paul was deployed. I am so happy to have it made and resting on my shelf for when I need a "you got this" pep talk.

Bookback

heads up – I used an affiliate link to blurb.com throughout this post. Use that link and code 15OFFBLURB to save 15% on your book order. Because the quality of instagram shots isn't always awesome, some of the full page images are a little grainy looking. The book making app told me this would happen and I just ignored it. For me, having the image – poor quality or not – was worth it. The images in the smaller grids are perfect.

This is freakin’ amazing. I love how fearless you are! I keep thinking I want to add my handwriting to images but I was thinking “inside the box” and never even thought to write all over the pages after the fact. I would be so afraid of “ruining” it which is really ridiculous when you think about it. I think you should do a blog post on NOT agonizing over things… you seem to be really good at that. Anyway, I. love. this.

    hi Elise, this looks superb!
I just finished a book but went over 240 pages which means I can not choose the premium paper.
So just curious which paper quality did you chose for your book? Thanks!

hmmmm, I do not remember for sure, but I doubt I would have paid extra for premium paper. 🙂

When you Use instagram is the only way to save the filter on the photo is to post it on instagram? Sometimes I want to use the filters but don’t necessarily want to share the photo. Is there a way to save the filter on the photo without posting it? By the way I LOVE this idea!!! Thank you for the inspiration.

turn your phone on airplane mode so you are not online – then upload and filter as many as you want. they will show up in your photos, but not your stream.

I love this idea. I have the toughest time knowing what text to put in photo books.. I am working on some for my family right now. I just don’t feel inspired to spend a lot of time on the computer typing in stories, comments, titles.. but I can DEFINITELY see myself writing them in later by hand like you did! Genius! Thanks for the inspiration!! ~Frances

I love Instagram as well and set mine up to be private since the majority of photos I take are of my kids and don’t see a need to share that. I tend to take just the regular photo on my iPhone and then process the ones I want later in Instagram and I like having the option of maintaining the original photo too.

This is absolutely incredible. I made a book for my 21st birthday party, which I absolutely loved and look through quite often, but I could totally see the fun of doing it with instagram pictures. I even more so love the fact that you have it for a designated period of time – a little chunk of your life in a little book. MORESO – I LOVE the fact that you wrote in the book, it looks incredible and makes it so personal.
This will definitely do the trick for the next “you got this” pep talk. Happy St. Patty’s Day!!

    Hey Elise,
I just tried to order a book on Blurb through your link and with the promo code, and it says the promo code has expired! Is this true? I didn’t realize it was tied to a use-by date!

I turn 40 this summer and have been taking random photos since January and will continue through December. Thought it would be a fun way to remember what we were doing the year I (and my hubby) turned 40. The bummer part is that I have to wait till January 1st to order it… Oh well it will be worth it!!
You said you book was 230 or so pages… Numbered pages or actually had 230 pages?
Thanks for posting your awesome projects!

i absolutely adore this book. i’m in the middle of completing a blurb book from when my daughter had brain surgery in July to remove a Colloid Cyst from her third ventricle (non-cancerous). i can hardly wait to order this but i want to know what kind of paper you had your pictures printed on? they give you 5 choices… 1) standard 80# 2) premium matte 100# 3) Premium lustre 100# 4) proline pearl photo 140# 5) proline uncoated 100# Thank you again for so much inspiration.

Hi Elise, can I just ask how you created the 2 x 2 grid so you get the 4 photos on a page? I love the look of this and want to create it for a Blurb book I’m working on – did you do it in photoshop or was it a template option within Blurb?

Revisiting this…..did you use Bookify or did you download the Blurb software? I need it to be fairly simple or I’ll never get it done! I fell apart on Project Life this year and have plans to make a book out of all of my Instagram shots, since that’s been the bulk of my photos this year. Thanks! As always, you do great work! Cheers!

I realize that you put this together over a year ago, but I’m just wondering if you remember if you used the online Bookify tool or if you used the software on your comp to lay out your book. I want to use the tool that uploads straight from your instagram stream, but when I do that I am unable to find how to make a 2×2 grid of the images. I hope they didn’t take that option away! There is no way I’ll be able to do a 365 in one book without it. I just love your book and hope I can figure out where the heck the grid option is!
