Trunk5

This was not supposed to be the 26th project. I had it all planned out, remember? But then I found an inexpensive wood trunk and realized that what I had intended to do for #26 would be WAY better if I waited for Paul to get home to complete it. So I'll still be making it and sharing – just not before my birthday.

Trunk6

And really, this trunk is the perfect project to end on. It's so classically me for three reasons :

  1. decided with little to no thought so there was no opportunity for second guessing.
  2. uses just two colors & simple shapes.
  3. perfectly imperfect.

I can usually tell when a project isn't right for me because it sits on my list and I hem and haw over how to complete it. The projects that I am meant to do are rushed and rarely thought through. That is exactly how this trunk came to be.

I bought this trunk on Saturday to use as a coffee table in our upstairs loft area. It was rad to begin with. I think it could have just been cleaned up a bit and worked as just a stained trunk. But I already have a stained brown coffee table. I wanted a bigger impact and I figured an $18 whim purchase was a good way to do it. If I grow out of this pattern or the color scheme no longer works in a year or so, I'll just repaint on top of it – OR – it will make a rad toy chest for our future littles.

Dimonds

(excuse the blurry & dark iPhone photos)

To get the look, I took off the hardware (except the hinges) and sanded the whole thing. I then painted two coats of ultra white satin finish wall paint. I let it dry then freehand taped off diamond shapes. I wanted the corners of them to be touching so with my thick tape I had to do them in stages. I added pink wall paint (I bought a small tester of Valspars Pink Burst at Lowe's) and then peeled up the tape and let it try again completely.

Concern

Then I added more tape to connect the corners of the already painted diamonds. When it started to look like that photo above I began to panic a bit. It looked like the diamonds were going to be totally wonky.

Finished

And of course, they are. But when you look at all of them together, they somehow work (at least in my head).

Trunk7

Once the top was done, I started going around the sides to fill it up. It wasn't too hard, but the corners got a little messed up because it was tricky to know what diamond points needed to match up.

Trunk3 Trunk2

I imagine it might seem a little odd? Crazy? Circus themed? But I am so pleased with it. Makes me smile and is totally different yet is going to fit with the rest of the place. (I think when there is more furniture in that room it won't be quite so loud.)

Trunk1

I have been having a hard time figuring out how to make the most of the space up in the loft. Now that I have a coffee table, my mind is whirling with ideas for the rest of it. I will share as progress gets made, but right now, I am waiting for our new couch to be delivered so our old couch can come upstairs.

And with that, I completed the 26 projects! I will be preparing a wrap up post to talk a bit more about all of them soon. Anticipating a question here… YES! I am absolutely doing a birthday project for 27. It's along similar lines but even better than the 26 projects. I'll be sharing the rules for it soon.

And can I just say that I love how you write these up? It’s not a DIY-let-me-teach-you-how-to-make-crafts post. It’s clear that you make these items for your real life, not just for your blog, and I love that you share your inspiration for each project and a little bit of your process. I love that. You have such a unique voice.
    Happy Tuesday 🙂

That’s what I thought, too! This looks so rad. I am really bad at diving into projects head first – or rather, my head going into loop thought mode is the actual problem, so your constant project flow gets me every time. Kudos, Elise!

I love it! I would stress out so much about making all the diamonds straight and perfectly aligned that I would end up never finishing the project. I wish I could have your carefree whimsiness because your finished project is wonderful!

This looks GREAT!!! Have you ever tried Frog Tape? It’s the green paint tape. I love the stuff because there is rarely any bleeding under the tape, and it doesn’t peel away paint if you stick it on top of a painted surface. It’s a couple bucks more, but I love the stuff.

haha, I actually love that rug. I have learned that not everything in my house can be graphic and two colors or it starts to look a little wonky. Hopefully with more stuff in the room it will fit together better. 🙂

Beautiful job Elise… you know what would look really cool in your project life? If you painted the palm of your hand a color of your choice and made a hand print on a 4×6 paper. Let the paint dry and then journal a little bit using your hand print as your template to write in about your 26 projects. Just a thought. I know I want to do something like that for my project life.

Super cool, Elise! And congrats to you on finishing up the 26. . .can’t wait to hear what you’ve got planned for 27 🙂 I’ve been curious as you’ve started Project Life – will you still be making seasonal minibooks? I’m very behind on posting the end of 2011, but last year I started a Mini A Month project for myself and did PL, too. All the books are done, just not all blogged about. Doing both again this year. Loved it. Thinking about making it into an e-course. . . http://jill2009.blogspot.com/search/label/a%20mini%20a%20month

I love this project, it’s so true doing things in the moment is great, not allowing yourself to think too much about a project more often than not leads to great results. The painters tape technique you’ve used is refreshing and inventive… I love the colour too!

hey Jill, I am going to be releasing a minibook this spring that is not seasonal related (I will be using it for something else and sharing it here). Summer minibooks are always the most popular, so if there is interest, I will be making those. I personally will be sticking with just PL. I will be doing a holiday minibook again this year though. Hope that answers a bit!
