enJOY it

an archived personal and craft blog from Elise Blaha Cripe.

I posted last fall about transitioning to natural skincare products. (You can read more about why I started making the switch in that post.) Four months later and I am still going pretty strong. I have stuck with some stuff, fallen in love with some stuff and added some new products to the mix. I thought it was time to share an update.

Pangeaorganics

I am still a big fan of my non-chemical mascara and everything Pangea Organics, including face & body lotion, mask & toner. I apply the face lotion every morning and night and if I miss it for a day (like when it's lost in my suitcase) and substitute with a different lotion, I can tell a difference in the softness of my skin. When I am consistent with it, I don't have visible white pores around my nose which was a chronic problem before.

Somewhat related : my skin has been rebelling a bit the past few months, especially up by my hairline. The placement and on and off frequency that it appears means its probably hormonal (perhaps TMI, but I am no longer regulating my hormones with a daily pill). I am going without harsh topical medication and am trying to just wait it out. I did a google search for natural remedies and it said you can take a daily zinc supplement to help with acne, so I have been trying that. Things are better than they were in November and December, but I am not sure if that is due to the zinc or just my body mellowing.

Minfusion

The big thing that I was on the hunt for last fall was natural nail polish & sunscreen. The hunt for a great liquid facial sunscreen continues, but I did receive a SPF mineral powder from Mineral Fusion that I love. It's free of oxybenzone and other toxins, offers SPF, evens out my skin tone & is easy to use because it's a powder in brush all in one. I will want a good fuller coverage sunscreen for spring and summer, but right now when I am not usually outside for extended periods of time (I wear a sunlight blocking hat to run) it's working great. I also use the Mineral Fusion lip gloss and love it. It's perfectly clear and gives just the right amount of shine without being sticky.

Nail polish wise, I am in love with a clear base coat from No Miss that I picked up at Whole Foods. Over the past few years, my nails have been a peeling, week mess. Since I started using this stuff, they don't break and are visibly stronger. I can't 100% say this is due to the polish because around the same time I started taking pre-natal vitamins and using Burt's Bees cuticle cream. 😉 (EDIT : I could not be less pregnant. The vitamins are just advance prep. I promise I wouldn't sneak a baby announcement into a 700 word post about skincare.)

Priti

I am still absolutely looking for good non-toxic (or less toxic) color polishes so I was excited to hear about Priti Polish from The Green Life. My friend Jessica (whose husband runs The Green Life) sent me some of their tester bottles. I tried both the metallic and the red and was super impressed with how smooth the color went on (one coat was enough!) and how long it lasted.

And finally, soap related. I tried Dr. Bronners bar soap and it was fine. But I also tried their big bottle of liquid soap as my hand-wash in the kitchen and that made my hands red, itchy and dry. Not great. It might have been due to excessive washing (this is when I first moved and was painting and cleaning and making up a storm) but still, ugh.

This has been quite an adventure! I was so thankful for all of your suggestions and ideas last time I posted about this. I still carry that little piece of paper about the bad chemicals (you can see it in this post) in my wallet and stand in the aisle and read the tiny-print on the back of products before purchasing anything. It's good times.

heads up : some of the products I mentioned here I received for free. I was not paid to mention them and I wouldn't endorse them if I wasn't a true fan.

Love love love the No Miss nail polish! I started using it when I was pregnant and wanted to avoid the (more) toxic stuff, and now I find I prefer it to my old nail polishes. Also, re: acne, I find that witch hazel with some pure essential oil of lavender does the trick for me! I use it as an astringent/toner & apply w/ a cotton ball. You’ve got some great recommendations here — thank you!

When my products start running out I’m going to be on the search for some more natural/less toxic alternatives as well!
I’m going for a 3 or below on the Skin Deep scale.

Thanks heaps for this post Elise. I am currently using Dr Hauschka facial products (which I find fantastic- my skin has never looked better – although my pregnancy may be helping with that ) but they are just a little to expensive for my current budget, so I am on the hunt for some slightly cheaper alternatives. I have just printed off your “Toxins to avoid” list and am putting it in my wallet! And thanks so much for all the suggestions, i have been reading through the comments too. 🙂 Very exciting to hear of upcoming family plans – I have only recently been at “that stage” was very exciting. Meeks 🙂

I made the more natural move a few years ago, after my bout with breast cancer and learning that only a small percentage is genetic. What’s left? Environmental exposures.
I focus my attention on being paraben-free, one line I haven’t seen mentioned here that is wonderful, with a wonderful foundation is 100% Pure. They have their own site and is also sold at QVC.com. Tarte is paraben-free, I like their stuff too. Korres is another brand to check out. I also have to throw out Ole Henricksen, which is my latest and I’m enjoying their products too.
For nail polish, like the others, I’ve gravitated toward Zoya and Butter, they’re “3 Free” – no formaldehyde, toulene or DBT, and have cool, fun colors.
For anti-perspirants, nothing “natural” out there, Clean has something out there they’ve tried that uses some kind of cotton something or another instead of the aluminum compounds you usually find. Unfortunately, for me, it didn’t work. There are tons of natural deodorants…take your pick.
One thing, everyone, try to watch out for anti-bacterials that use the active ingredient Tricolsan. Its technically a pesticide and can be found in some anti-gingivitis toothpastes. Its also in Bath and Body Works anti-back soaps and lotions, but funny enough, not their hand sanitizers.
7th Generation for home products as well as good ol’ fashioned baking soda and vinegar both scrub, clean, and disinfect.
I’ve gone through several cycles now, I really have tried to find items readily accessible, if anyone would like any more info, just DM me!

I started using all natural (or as natural as I could find at my local drug store in London) face wash/lotion products a few weeks ago. My acne has been slightly worse lately, but that could be hormone issues, so I’m trying to wait it out a few more weeks before giving into the chemicals. My skin does feel healthier and softer (though I try not to touch my face–acne). I’m glad that you posted an update with other products and I know going all natural isn’t some quick fix to perfectly clear skin.
I’m excited to slowly branch out and include more natural products in the rest of my life. Is Lush a good brand? (I know they have a store here).

Excited to hear you are making the switch too. Lush was talked about in the comments of my last post on this. I think they use chemical dyes and fragrances. 😦

My brother-in-law runs the manufacturing of Burt’s Bees-can’t go wrong! I’ve also heard that Skin Authority is supposed to be good.

about the dr. bronner… i’ve been using it for years, and 1 large bottle lasts me for about 1.5 years. i get a bottle of regular foaming soap (cuz i want the pump that makes it foamy). after it’s gone, i fill it with about 1/4″ of the bronners liquid soap (i like the orange one). then i fill the rest with water. it’s so concentrated that you only need a little, and the pump foams it for you. perfect cuz those pumps will only work with watery type soaps. this is just for hand soap. i don’t use on body cuz it’s a little drying.

just started following them…thanks for that. the products i’ve been using lately are drying out my face. looking forward to trying something different.
we use the dr. bronner’s soap bar as well. my daughter has such sensitive skin that this is the only soap that works well for her.

I added some water to mine and am going to keep doing that as it goes down. I think reducing the concentration will really help. thanks for the tip. 🙂

I’m so excited about this post! I read “No More Dirty Looks” in November and I’ve been slowly switching to all natural products. I’ve never been much for makeup and beauty stuff anyway, mostly just the basics and my one weakness- self tanner….so it shouldn’t be too hard to switch.
May favorites so far are the Lavera mascara and the Lavera self tanner. I checked out Sephora and their natural lines were so expensive, but Target’s selection was huge and their prices were really good.
I’m really impatient waiting for my shampoo, body wash, and face wash to run out so I can switch them out….
And my gummy vitamin regimen is pretty ridiculous: multi-vitamin, omega-3/DHA vitamin, and caramel-flavored calcium chews. The caramels are my favorite. And I liked the pre-natal gummies best before I tried the cheaper multi-vitamin.
Thanks so much Elise, I’m glad to read so many people’s suggestions. But it does make me wonder how companies are still using nasty chemicals when so many of us are on to them!

Yes, definitely dilute the dr bronners! You can use just a tablespoon or two in a soap dispenser, and fill the rest with water.

hey marta, I do not wear perfume too often, but the ones I do wear have chemicals. I cannot give too much advice, but I am sure a google search for green or natural perfume would turn up some stuff! 🙂 good luck! elise

I know this is kind of an old post but on the deodorant front, I actually really love the salt crystal stuff. I use a bottle of lavender water, spritz then rub the salt stuff on. It works great for me.

Our skin, being the largest organ outside the body, is very important to be taken cared of. There are many products there available saying that would help our skin become healthier. But we should be more careful in applying one because the skin is very sensitive.
