enJOY it

an archived personal and craft blog from Elise Blaha Cripe.

I posted last fall about transitioning to natural skincare products. (You can read more about why I started making the switch in that post.) Four months later and I am still going pretty strong. I have stuck with some stuff, fallen in love with some stuff and added some new products to the mix. I thought it was time to share an update.

Pangeaorganics

I am still a big fan of my non-chemical mascara and everything Pangea Organics, including face & body lotion, mask & toner. I apply the face lotion every morning and night and if I miss it for a day (like when it's lost in my suitcase) and substitute with a different lotion, I can tell a difference in the softness of my skin. When I am consistent with it, I don't have visible white pores around my nose which was a chronic problem before.

Somewhat related : my skin has been rebelling a bit the past few months, especially up by my hairline. The placement and on and off frequency that it appears means its probably hormonal (perhaps TMI, but I am no longer regulating my hormones with a daily pill). I am going without harsh topical medication and am trying to just wait it out. I did a google search for natural remedies and it said you can take a daily zinc supplement to help with acne, so I have been trying that. Things are better than they were in November and December, but I am not sure if that is due to the zinc or just my body mellowing.

Minfusion

The big thing that I was on the hunt for last fall was natural nail polish & sunscreen. The hunt for a great liquid facial sunscreen continues, but I did receive a SPF mineral powder from Mineral Fusion that I love. It's free of oxybenzone and other toxins, offers SPF, evens out my skin tone & is easy to use because it's a powder in brush all in one. I will want a good fuller coverage sunscreen for spring and summer, but right now when I am not usually outside for extended periods of time (I wear a sunlight blocking hat to run) it's working great. I also use the Mineral Fusion lip gloss and love it. It's perfectly clear and gives just the right amount of shine without being sticky.

Nail polish wise, I am in love with a clear base coat from No Miss that I picked up at Whole Foods. Over the past few years, my nails have been a peeling, week mess. Since I started using this stuff, they don't break and are visibly stronger. I can't 100% say this is due to the polish because around the same time I started taking pre-natal vitamins and using Burt's Bees cuticle cream. 😉 (EDIT : I could not be less pregnant. The vitamins are just advance prep. I promise I wouldn't sneak a baby announcement into a 700 word post about skincare.)

Priti

I am still absolutely looking for good non-toxic (or less toxic) color polishes so I was excited to hear about Priti Polish from The Green Life. My friend Jessica (whose husband runs The Green Life) sent me some of their tester bottles. I tried both the metallic and the red and was super impressed with how smooth the color went on (one coat was enough!) and how long it lasted.

And finally, soap related. I tried Dr. Bronners bar soap and it was fine. But I also tried their big bottle of liquid soap as my hand-wash in the kitchen and that made my hands red, itchy and dry. Not great. It might have been due to excessive washing (this is when I first moved and was painting and cleaning and making up a storm) but still, ugh.

This has been quite an adventure! I was so thankful for all of your suggestions and ideas last time I posted about this. I still carry that little piece of paper about the bad chemicals (you can see it in this post) in my wallet and stand in the aisle and read the tiny-print on the back of products before purchasing anything. It's good times.

heads up : some of the products I mentioned here I received for free. I was not paid to mention them and I wouldn't endorse them if I wasn't a true fan.

    Hi Elise
I have been a long time follower and love reading your blog! I was so happy to see the Priti polish in your post. I was going to recommend that to you! I just started using it also, along with the Priti Soy Polish Remover. You will have to try the remover, it takes a little more scrubbing to get off, but leaves your nails smooth and soft, not dried out like the other stuff and the smell (or lack there of) is so much better!

Hmmm, I was actually disappointed in the mascara when I tried their volume mascara a few years back. I found it very flakey. It went on smooth and looked great, but was off in about 2 hours. Did you find that with this particular version? Cause I really like the idea of non toxic mascara but have yet to find one that I really like.

So glad for this, I’m starting to make these changes as well. Question if you don’t mind sharing – what prenatal do you take? I’m on the hunt for one that I can actually swallow and at the same time does not require a million pills a day.

@Kimberly… I hated prenatal vitamins, between the smell, the taste and the SIZE, I found them hard to swallow. My doctor told me to take two kids vitamins instead, and I’d be getting the same thing, in a much kinder dosage. ?? Just a thought. I’d sometimes take them at the same time, or one in the AM, one in the PM.

I’ve been trying to use more natural products myself! I don’t know why I didn’t discover them before…the non-natural brands are advertised so much more so maybe I was swayed by all the TV and magazine ads – ? Anyway, I have been loving Jason shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, and Kiss My Face olive oil soap. We also use Tom’s toothpaste and I started used Tom’s deodorant (but it’s not as odor protecting as it claims so jury is still out!). Rachel at smallnotebook.org has some good recommendations and I always like hearing others, thanks!

elise: i’m sure the prenatals are playing a huge part in your nail quality. mine have always been pretty strong, but they are growing like weeds while i’m on the prenatals!
@kimberly b: i take citranatal (rx) and they taste fine, maybe even a tiny bit sweet! they are huge, though, as most multi vitamins are.

I’m obsessed with nail polish from Zoya – it’s free of toluene, formaldehyde, phthalates and camphor, and they have hundreds of amazing shades. If you’re considering switching deodorant (going aluminum free) I’d also recommend the natural deodorant from Arm and Hammer. Losing the aluminum means there’s no antiperspirant in it, but their formula smells nice, you can get it at most major stores, and it works much better than the “just baking soda & coconut oil” varieties you can pay up to $12 for online. Having just made a switch to natural products myself, I’ve been through a lot of trial and error with some good, bad & ugly products. It’s a great change to make, though!

Thanks for the update, Elise. Just recently I printed out that list of “bad” ingredients and stuck it in my wallet. Now I’m lingering in the natural bodycare aisles and squatting down to look at all those tiny ingredient lists! Haha. I’m trying the Avalon Organics Vitamin C facewash you last recommended and the scent is SO GOOD- I can’t get enough of that citrus-y scent. Thanks!

You should check out Zoya nail polish and remover. They are free of most of the nasty chemicals found in other brands and they offer promos all the time, which is a great way to try some colors. I’ve been using their brand for a year and the colors and wear time haven’t disappointed. There’s also a color called “Elise” and it’s in the orange family! 🙂

You should also check out Butter nail polish. I’ve tried a few different colors out and am a huge fan. I will warn you they are pretty expensive, but the quality makes it seem worth it.

I love it and have not noticed it flaking off. I do not wear it everyday and so it is a few months old at this point. I can tell a difference when I put it on and it is not as smooth so I should probably repurchase.

I love this information! I’m (slowly but surely) trying to work towards more/all natural beauty products as well, so it’s great to hear honest opinions on them – thank you!
For hand soap, we use this one from EO in our bathroom and it’s significantly less drying than any other hand soap I’ve found…and it smells great! We’ve even had guests comment on how much they like it: http://www.eoproducts.com/Products/EO-Products-Liquid-Hand-Soap—12-oz__HANDSOAP-12OZ.aspx

I have been taking Trader Joes’s brand prenatals for about 5yrs now I started taking them a year before we were going to start trying and have continued taking them since having a baby. I brought them in to have my OB-GYN look at them to make sure they had the right amounts of the important stuff and she said they were great, that they are the ones she normally recommends to her patients.

yay for these types of posts!!!
how funny you mentioned the pills – about 4 months ago I ran out of ‘em, right as I was changing health insurances. decided we’re close enough to “make-a-family” time so i went off it too. first few months my skin also rebelled, but it’s evened out quite nicely so give it time.
one of my tips for great skin, especially when you haven’t been eating well or if you’ve been traveling: chlorophyll! i add a few drops to a glass of water, once a day, and 3 days later, my skin is smooth, clear and glowing. i don’t do it daily and obviously i try to eat well in the first place to avoid that, but it really is a good fix.
glad you liked the priti samples – just wish we had more on hand to send your way. they’ve been selling like crazy!
weird about the dr. bronners – I love the liquid soap. we dilute it though, as it is thicker and stronger than needed out of the bottle. so 1 bottle gets separated into 2 and filled with water. that may help cut down whatever was drying out your skin.

Ava Anderson has a sunscreen that is chemical and nano-particle free. A friend uses it and really likes it. They are a company that uses consultants to sell their products (like Avon or Pampered Chef) which is a bit of a turnoff for me (I am not a consultant nor is my friend), but it is next to impossible to find sunscreens that do not contain either of those things so I have been thinking of trying it this year for my family. Also, to the best of my knowledge, they don’t test on animals. Good luck – I know how hard it is to get rid of all of these chemicals.

Hi Elise, I use tea tree oil on my occasional break outs. I buy the little jar at Trader Joe’s about once a year and put it on a q-tip and dab away. It says on the bottle to dilute it, but I don’t and it’s not been a problem for my skin. But my skin isn’t sensitive.
I’d highly recommend that as a natural anti-pimple solution!

I use these too! Actually, I’ve been using them for my wools and delicates, and I’m switching to Ecover whenever my current detergent is all done. Anyways, I really like the soap nuts, they kind of have an odor of their own, but I’ve noticed that once the clothes (and the nuts) dry, everything just smells clean and like itself (i.e. wools have that wolly smell).
Also – I’ve used the Ecover dishsoap detergent, and found I loved it – lasted a long time too.

I have fair, sensitive skin (as you probably saw in November at Cafe Italia) and hormonal breakouts around my chin and cheeks. My aesthetician recently gave my Tizo Solar Protection Formula and it is a victory for my skin! It is magic that is a 40 SPF, non irritating and you don’t really need makeup afterwards!
I am loving Avalon Organics vitamin C wash too 🙂
Dr. Bronner’s had been a nightmare for me in the past too; it is drying and rash forming 😦 I suggest staying away from that brand for sensitive skin.

Elise-Coming off birth control without a doubt messes with your face, amongst many other things. It is honestly so much healthier for your body to be off of it, but is an important thing, so I get it. Give yourself a few months, and your hormones should regulate themselves. Also, I was on fish oil and folic acid the whole time before I was pregnant and while I was pregnant. If you aren’t taking these, you should consider it. There have been studies done about how important they are for women, pregnant or not. However, once pregnant so good for unborn babies. So excited by your natural choices for products and for your upcoming journey on adding to your family. What an utterly life altering but amazing experience.

You could also try a progesterone cream for your face. The owner of my local no chemical bath and body shop recommended it to me when I switched to all natural products. Some of the bad chemicals act like estrogen receptors, which also causes a hormonal imbalance (another reason these chemicals are often found in samples of breast tissue). I used the progesterone cream for about 4 months and found it helpful. After awhile I no longer needed to use it.
I’d also recommend zoya nail polish and badger sunscreen. If you are removing chemicals, you should take a look at your deodorant and your toothpaste. Deodorant is tricky to find one that works and does not contain aluminum or sodium lauryl sulfate. I’m still looking for one I love. Most toothpasts, including Tom’s, contain sodium lauryl sulfate too.

    Hi Elise!
Just wanted to share the sunscreen I use, http://www.invisiblezinc.com/benefits.htm – it is from an aussie company and I love it! It is just made out of zinc.
On my skin it can be a bit thick and leave a white sheen if I don’t rub it in properly, so I mainly use it when I know I will be in full sun (ie at the beach, or swimming etc) but it offers really good protection, I used it a few weeks ago when we were at the beach near on our summer holidays here, and missed a spot on my neck, and OMG could you tell where I had used the sunscreen and where I had missed, the sunburt spot was horrid! The invisible zinc totally did the trick.
I then use a good facial and body scrub at the end of the day after piling on the sunscreen, and I don’t get breakouts.
Thanks for sharing you skin products too, I’ll be keen to see what I can source out here in Australia.
    Cheers,
    Lee L. 🙂

I know it’s not a “natural product” but I’ve been using the Olay Pro-X (little hand-held facial thing) for almost a year now. I’ve used it with both Olay AND natural products (whatever I’ve had on hand at the time) and my skin has never been better. I feel like the brush gently scrubs off the dead skin and that keeps my pores from clogging…It’s been like a miracle for me 🙂 Just a thought…
And, if you find a natural deodorant that actually works, I’d love to hear about it…anything without an antiperspirant leaves me stinky (TMI, sorry!).
