EDIT! I've gotten a lot of questions about this project and shared some extra tips here!

This project was completely inspired by this. I loved the huge size. I loved the black and white. My original plan was to make my handwriting messy and almost not readable just like that inspiration image. But then I got started and knew I would mess it up if I tried to do anything other than write my normal way.

Art1

The canvas is huge. The second largest one that Michael's sells. I "primed" it by painting it with a combination of white acrylic and water. The next night, I started writing with a mix of black acrylic and water. At first, I tried to make the words dark and perfect the first time around. And then I realized that was messing up my letter flow and it looked strange. So I went down the whole canvas with one or two dabs of paint per word. The color, of course, didn't look good, but the words appeared more naturally written, which is what I wanted.

Art3

Then I went back and retraced all my words with a good coat of black paint.

Art5

The words are lyrics from Swing Life Away by Rise Against. Long ago, when Paul and I first started dating, he had me listen to this song. Then one weekend when we were headed out with some of his friends, I slipped him a piece of paper with one of my favorite lines from the song. (I think he still has it in his wallet.) When we were in Maryland we especially liked the line "let's pack our bags and settle down where palm trees grow" because of course, San Diego was the goal. This was the song we chose for our first dance at our wedding.

Art6

Of course, I didn't measure or plan (or even have the lyrics written down in advance) and so I sort of ran out of room and didn't get to fit the palm tree line into it. But I finished with maybe the most important line of the whole song : "If love is a labor I'll slave 'til the end."

Art4

It is one of my favorites. It hangs right in our front entry way area (which will make more sense when I share a downstairs tour soon) so it's the first thing you see when you walk in. It might be a little intense for for that, but I love it and happily Paul does too.

as you can kinda see in the photos, that happened to me too, I had to go back over them again to make them dark. I just used a cheap brush and the second cheapest acrylic at michaels. It also helps to add some water to the paint.

Hi Elise, do you have a setting that disables pinning to Pinterest? I tried pinning this project of yours, but I get an error saying that there are no images here. I understand if this is the case, just curious 🙂
    Thanks!

    Hey Elise –
I’ve been thinking about doing something along this line since this post. Question about going over the script again to make it darker: was that super hard? I find when I go over writing with a pen to make it darker, it looks weird and non-flowey – like I wasn’t writing it normal to begin with. Any tips you can share about keeping the integrity of the look of your natural writing when you added more paint?
    Thanks!

hey! the key is to go fast the first time to make sure your handwriting looks the most natural. And then the second time, when you are making it darker to detach from the fact that it is your handwriting and just look at it as a detail painting. You are just recover the lines that are already there, dont think of them as letters – just lines. That helped me make it clean and clear. 🙂 good luck!

Crazy thing… I saw this pinned and immediately clicked on it because I’ve been wanting to do something like this for awhile now… The whole time in my head I was thinking how I wanted to do this with the Swing Life Away lyrics because it’s my favorite song in the whole wide world (I have ‘let’s compare scars, I’ll tell you whose is worse’ tattooed on my foot). So imagine my shock and excitement when I got to looking at the tutorial a bit closer and realized it was the same song!!!! I love it and it’s beautiful! I can’t wait to try it out myself. 🙂

Love this! I’m gonna do an Avett Bros song that my hubby and I love. Quick question… You said you primed then painted with a mix of your acrylic and water. What was your paint to water ratio? And… When you went back over your text, did you use pure paint? Sorry for all the questions, just wanna get mine right! Again, love this!! Thanks for sharing!

About half water, half paint for the primer and then I used just a tiny bit of water with the black while going over the letters so the paint flowed well.

So when you primed it with acrylic white paint and water… how much water to paint ratio? What was the consistency like? When you added some water to the black was it thicker or runnier for the script?

You know, I could not tell you. Probably almost one to one for the white. It was definitely more watery with the white than the black. If you are new to painting with acrylic and canvas, I would try orin something small to get a feel for what you like and what feels most comfortable to write with. 🙂

What is the water/paint ratio that you used for the primer and then the script lettering? was it still thick or a little runny? (I tried posting this question earlier and it didn’t work, if this is repeated I apologize!)

I tried my hand at giant script art tonight and it was a disaster. Do you have any other tips? I primed my canvas 4 nights ago. Tonight I wrote my words out with a dab or two of paint and I loved the direction I was heading in. When I went over my words, my letters began to thicken. A lot! Then it looked like a big meas. Did you use a specific brush? When you went over your words, did you mix your acrylic paint with water or was it strictly acrylic. Help me, please!

    hi Natasha,
I am sorry you are having trouble with it! I am glad you took the time to write your words with just a bit of paint, that keeps your handwriting more natural and should help make the final result look more like YOUR script. As for the second coat… I used the exact same brush for both coats. Just a small cheap brush … I am not sure on the size (though bigger than a watercolor brush). I find acrylic paint VERY had to work with on it’s own, so I mixed some water with it so I felt comfortable working with it. Then I just went super slowly over all the words.
I wish I had more advice than that.. .but really it’s all I did. I think, for me, most of it was about having good brush control! I had practiced writing scrip a LOT before I attempted this project.
    Hope that helps! elise

The water made it easier to work with the paint. It thinned it out just a bit and that helped. I would practice a lot to get comfortable! 🙂

I totally love this, I made my own a few weeks ago, but it didn’t have the loose fluidity of yours. I think I’ll try something a bit more informal next time. I do, however, wonder what paintbrush you used. Do you remember?
