While I was up in Sacramento, I was able to make a few frames out of old fence wood.

My dad recently replaced the redwood fence in our backyard. When I heard the plan, I asked him to hang on to some of the old weathered wood so we could make some frames.

My dad liked the idea and he actually figured out how to make them and created a few before I got home.

We used a Miter saw to make pieces with 45 degree angle cuts on either end. Then we used wood glue and U-shaped nails to join the corners together. My parents used their frames to hang some large prints and I made a 5×7 and 11×14 frame to hang in our apartment.

The frames do not have a routed ledge on the backside for dropping in glass and art, so we used plexi-glass to protect the front of the prints. The plexi-glass is held into place with a few staples from a staple gun and the art is carefully secured behind that with paper and tape. The print in the photo directly above is from Little Brown Pen and it’s a new favorite.

Both of the pieces above are going to fit into a gallery wall that I am making in my office (since Paul is deploying and we will be moving as soon as he gets back, the office will soon be rearranged to make it better suited for one). I’ll share once it’s done!

I love the frames! I was skeptical when you mentioned it a few days back but I love the wood and the thickness of the frames! They turned out awesome! Im going to do week in the life also…a little worried about my dedication to it because I’m taking two graduate classes also so we’ll see how that goes. I think that until I can afford to make it into a book I’m going to just blog it. I’m excited to see your version because I know how great you are at working with what you have and making it all about the pictures and the words. Your version may inspire me to do the book version sooner than later.

Lovely project! There is just something about using weathered items from somewhere familiar. Brings back a whole new life to things and will rekindle memories for a lifetime.

I’ve always wanted to do that! My grandmother’s old farm has some nice old wood I’d like to use. Could you please, if you’ve got some time, make up a step by step instruction sheet?

Your dad seems to be pretty good at this fence replacing thing… Hehe, good thing he did keep the old ones from your previous fence for all the projects you have in mind. That frame you made can be a good start for an online business, probably in etsy or just in a backyard or garage sale. πŸ™‚

Love the frames but I would love to the back side of one of the frames just to see how you did it.
