Weeks ago, I mentioned I was trying to think of a way to document this year. I considered a lot of ideas and for awhile thought I was going to go entirely digital with an album or book. But printing all those digital 8.5×11 pages seemed expensive and waiting until the end of the year to have book printed through blurb or somewhere did not appeal to my impatient side. I wanted something I could work on at the end of every month.

I finally decided to go with a Kolo photo album. The one I chose, has two photo sleeves on each page that are about 4×7.75 and are designed to hold a 4×6 photo. Slipping a 4×6 photo into each sleeve felt a bit too basic (left image above) so I decided to have my photos printed 4×8 (with scrapbookpictures.com) and then at home trim off that extra quarter inch so they would fit in my book (right image above).

IMG_0932

At this size, the photos take up the whole half of the page which makes the book seem more full and less like a traditional photo album. I first mapped out how my pages would go then adhered the photos that would be sharing a sleeve back to back. Next, I slipped the photos into the removed page protectors and punched three holes through both photos, using the existing holes in the sleeve as a guide.

I created a few 4×7.75 inch canvases in PSE in order to share multiple photos on one print. On the prints with two images, I sewed a zig-zag stitch with my sewing machine down the dividing line to separate them and add extra detail.

As mentioned in my earlier post, this is my book. It is not about Paul and I, but more about the things I will be doing. Right now, this means the book is about a lot of craft projects. And I am happy with that. I love the idea of having a book full of what I made over the course of the year.

I am planning on doing a monthly "here's what happened" write up in addition to the photo pages. The fonts on this page (and for the months that will follow) are bead chain & optima. And yep – just saw that "workhsop" typo. Oops.

Above are the pages I have completed for January & that last right page is the start of Febraury. You can click any image to enlarge. I have decided to include odds and ends that are appropriate in the photo protectors as well (like the paint chip & fabric samples). I also included the text from the blog for the 40 loaves project. I made canvases in PSE for the bread images so I could include four photos of each loaf.

I'm excited about this so far and hope it is fun to keep up with. I store all my photos in iPhoto and at the end of each month plan on just going through and picking the ones that best represent the big stuff. It's helpful that the 4×8 photos are just $.25 to print. I am trying to limit each month to about four to six page spreads, but that may change.

If you have any questions, please ask in the comments and I will answer them there. And PS – I shared ideas for building a 2011 album on Here's Looking at Me Kid earlier this year if you want to try something like this on a smaller scale.

I really like this idea. It would be easy to take your plan and modify it in years to come to document whatever you want. I have been toying with the Project Life book, but I like to have more control, which you offer here. And you can probably stick ephemera into the pockets, too. Nice job!

Love this idea, Elise! I often look at albums like this and disregard them because of the “extra” paper in the photo pocket – I get that it’s for labeling the photos, but still – sorta boring. Love how you’ve adapted this – great smaller size too. The Project Life album is big – I love the project, but I am wondering where I’m going to put all these binders in my home after a while. Hooray for minis for easier storage 🙂

elise, i don’t know who made you so brilliant, but seriously. i have been trying to think of a way to document our year, but scrapbooking just takes too much time for me (never gets finished) and i hate boring regular photo albums. this is so nice & clean, straightforward yet still creative, and in a hardbound book that you will be able to have forever. thank you SO SO much.

I really like this idea. It’s so much less pressure than creating actual scrapbook pages.

Love the idea of documenting all that you create in a year! Also love the format and photo sizes… I usually go for non-traditional. Thanks for the idea!

This is awesome. I just had to pop over from my reader and tell you how inspired I always am by your blog and ideas. Your monthly pages from your first year of marriage inspired me to go back and design digital photo books from each of our three years of marriage. (It helps that I have all my photos organized by both in iPhoto and that we got married at the tail end of December, so each book with be January – December.)
I’m almost finished with 2010 and then will work my way back to 2009 and 2008. It’s been so much fun to relive the memories and I’ve left an area for handwritten journaling on each page so I can document some notes throughout the digital book.
Thank you for the inspiration! You made me realize that I want all those memories in print and not just on my Mac(even the small details like things we made, dinners we ate and rooms we painted).

This is such a good idea – documenting as you go. Every year at the end of the year I plan to make a huge photo album for the whole year…and it never happens. Breaking it up seems like such an obvious and brilliant way to do it.

Really like Kolo albums but always got frustrated with your same point on the 4×6 looking less “done” in those holes. Wonderful, very artistic yet simple solution!

I’ve abandoned printing photos for the past couple years and just have a box where I keep mementos (ticket stubs, birthday cards) and then back up all my photos on my computer, but now I want to put them in an album again. Yours is adorable!

I love you album! It’s a off to a great start. I do the same thing every year, but in a scrapbook form. It works better for me, because I enjoy the process of picking out the different color card stock. I might try your method one year, it’ll be so much cleaner. Keep on sharing your book…we love it!

I am doing something similar, but I am waiting until the end of the year. Since I just started my blog this year, I have been saving all the photos I use in a “blog” folder in iPhoto. I make little notes on the images in descriptions and at the end of there I will have a little inspiration book of things that appealed to me enough I wanted to blog about them. I hadn’t thought about how I will bind/contain them so I might have to look into the kolo album. Thanks for sharing 🙂

Newbie question – do you need photoshop elements to lay out your pictures like that, or is there a free/online alternative? Thanks!

  27. elise blaha Avatar

hey Ana, I know there are some free online options but I dont know if you can layer photos with them the way I did. I know with Picnik through flickr you can add text, crop, etc – but I dont think you can get two photos layered. Good luck! e

Elise, Your 2011 album is so incredibly brilliant and beautiful! I currently use the same kolo 2up album to store the older photos that I know I’ll never scrap. I never ever ever thought to use it the way you are using it now. I am crazy in love with your approach – printing 4×7.75. Omg, GENIUS!! The album takes on a completely different look – so polished and gorgeous.
I can’t wait to give your system a try. I recently just bought a 12×12 binder and was going to give the project life system a try but the format is just too big for me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great system, the size is just too unwieldy for me.
Your system is the perfect solution. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful work!

I am a little late in this game, but I’m wondering which of the kolo albums this is. It looks like the Catalina album, but the pages in their photos look like the protector part ends at 6 inches while the paper goes to 8 inches. Also it looks like the paper isn’t removeable. Any thoughts? Thanks!

hi Mandi, it is the Catalina. Mine has plastic that extends through the rings. Not sure if they have changed it. And the paper does slide out, its a bit harder on the top, but it works. Hope that helps! elise

I just got my Catalina album in the mail, and they did indeed change the pages. (It even says “New and improved!” on the cover.)
I’m going to make it work, but I haven’t figured out how yet. I may have to nix the album pages entirely and just use my own photo printouts.
