One of my big goals for this year is to be more careful with my business expenses to help raise my bottom line a bit. The first major transition was to order my packaging supplies in mass quantities from an online retailer instead of doing multiple shopping trips every month at a major chain store. On Monday, three big boxes arrived on my doorstep. It took about an hour yesterday to rearrange my office and closet to make space for 50 mailing tubes, 250 bubble mailers and 1000 pieces of chipboard.

To give you an idea of what sort of savings we're talking about : I was paying about $15 for 25 size #0 bubble mailers. Now I am paying $37 for 250 of the same. Can't really beat that. Totally worth a bit of reworking storage.

I have been making lists of other things I am constantly restocking (mailing labels, plastic sleeves, book rings) and will be purchasing them in large quantities too. It feels like a big cost up front, but the overall time and money saved is totally worth it.

This whole ordering and receiving packages from uline is like déjà vu. When I worked in retail, it was one of my responsibilities to order supplies for the store. Realizing that I am now ordering mass quantities supplies for my own shop is pretty surreal.

And please note : This post is totally not sponsored by uline. I just try to be honest with my experience as a small shop owner, and knowing stuff like this would have made me change my spending months ago.

I am currently the featured entrepreuner on the new website, StartUp Corner. I think this site is going to be an amazing resource for new businesses and I am excited to see it grow. I also have another fun interview up on Tea Talk this week.

I love buying bulk. It is one of my favorite pastimes 😉 I am not sure if you have a Costco or Price Club, but those are my best bets. The negative is stores like that do not always have the same items in stock, but you may want to check it out to see if they carry anything that would be of use to you. You might have good luck with things like ink (although maybe you already have a place you like to get that). Best of luck!

I will be forever grateful for you sharing where you purchased your shipping supplies. I am just starting my little side etsy shop for fun, & have gone to walmart, target, etc. trying to find the cheapest tubes & help save as much money as possible in the end, but it just didn’t seem to feel assuring! A bulk shipping idea makes sense & Thank you for sharing this!

I started using online resources for supplies for my Etsy shop a few months ago and it made a huge difference. And, I order one day and it’s usually here in the next day or two. Totally worth the wait.
Congrats on your feature, going to check it all out now!

I love U-line products and their service. The non-profit company I use to work for ordered products from them all the time.
Congrats on the two interviews. Loved them both!

I love U-line as well, when you call a person answers the phone, and the they know who you are and what you have ordered in the past – excellent customer service.

Ha! This looks like the shipping material storage in my studio (which is actually stored under my work table). I’ve always bought shipping supplies in mass quantities – even when my shop was just beginning because it is SO much cheaper! Also http://www.clearbags.com is a great places to get those clear plastic envelopes for packaging artwork.

when my hubby was selling things online, he found that purchasing bubble envelopes (and other misc. office supplies) were super cheap on ebay! of all places, ebay was actually the cheapest. Not sure if it beats Uline, as I have no clue how much it is on ebay, but it’s worth checking out 🙂

Packaging looks great! I just started my shop but have been thinking about this. I priced some items at a big box office supply store, and they were stupid expensive and had some crazy pricing.

Good interview. I liked the part about you sharing how you had to pay people to take your shifts sometimes. That’s real life right there, and I appreciate the honesty! As I continue to carve my way as an independent it’s been helpful to read what others have done, thanks!

Can you buy book rings for less then 6 for one dollar? Oh my, I would die and buy one ton if I’d see something like this. Here in Brazil they cost one dollar EACH, and they are really hard to find. That is the reason why I use them only in very special projects.
You are being smart for buying in large quantities. That is one of the easiest ways to spend less money.

Awesome Elise. I too started buying in bulk from uline (for the ribbon jar), but eventually switched to a local supplier. I couldnt believe they were cheaper than uline, but they are and they deliver (for free). It’s something you might look into for the next round, usually they are called box companies (at least up here, some times also listed under paper products). Well done conquering the little goals already. You are going to kick 2011’s ass!

I am also a list maker. I love to make to-do lists and get such a thrill of seeing things checked off. It’s my little visual boost to see what I’m accommplishing and keeps me “up” to see everything through.

I’m so glad you’re now using mailing tubes! Despite your efforts to keep the post office from bending or folding my ‘enjoy it’ poster print, it arrived with two creases. The mailing tubes are definitely a better shipping container for posters (vs. the photo/dcoument mailers) and should prevent transit damage to your future orders.

hi Marianne, do you need a new poster? I now use tubes when posters are the only item in the shipment – but when its a poster and a print I still ship in the flat mailers. Not ideal. Let me know if I should send you a new one! Thanks for the feedback, elise
