Headboards
In August, Paul and I bought a new mattress. It was a big purchase, but something we had wanted to do since about three years ago when I moved in. And since August, I have been dreaming about buying an actual bed. Something with a headboard and legs. Something that isn't just a metal frame with wheels.

But come to find out, beds, like mattresses, are Very Expensive. Plus there is the fact that our tastes are bound to change in a few years and we'll want something completely different.

For awhile we thought we would buy a new headboard and frame as a Christmas gift to each other. So that just left the problem of figuring out which one to buy.

And then I saw this post in the archives of Design Sponge about building a headboard. Oh for sure : this was the new plan.

Ours is going to be simpler in shape (probably rectangular) and come off the ground only about four feet. We'll see, I have to take some measurements and see what's available at home depot. But our local fabric store sells upholstery foam by the yard and quilt batting should be easy to come by.

Right now, the plan is to cover it in fabric and I think I am going to use this method to accomplish a chevron print. (I am going to make the strips much wider if possible.) I might be able to find chevron fabric, but I think the dimension added from the seams is pretty cool and might work well as a headboard. The best part about the fabric is that in a year, when I realize I am over chevron, I'll just rip out the staples and recover it with something new.

Changeability at it's best. In theory.

So this whole plan might be crazy. I am fairly certain Paul thinks I've lost my mind (nothing new). But, I am hoping to get it made and behind our bed by November 1st. I'll keep you posted.

we did something like this a few years ago – it’s a lot easier than it seems! we simply cut a piece of wood to the correct shape, added a layer or two of batting, and then wrapped our fabric of choice around it. voila! headboard!

My mother made my headboard for my first college apartment. It was really easy! Just like Robyn, she just cut the shape out of a piece of plywood from Home Depot, added a layer or two of batting. Then she covered it with plain white fabric, then added another fabric over top. Putting the plain fabric on first allows you to easily change the fabric as your style changes!

this has been on my to-do list for years as well. we have a very low, sleek bed + so i filled the wall above it with a gallery wall. i can’t have both, so until i’m sick of the gallery wall, i’ll probably put off this project too! cannot wait to see your version though!

This has been on my list of things to do for over a year! I just haven’t taken the time to search for fabric that fits in with our bedroom decor. Perhaps you have inspired me to get going on this project 🙂

I’ve been meaning to make a headboard too.. when it was back to school season, I bought a mattress topper (the egg carton looking ones) to use as batting, but that’s as far as I got. can’t wait to see how the chevron print turns out!

i’ve made 2…after doing the first 1 w/just batting i did the 2nd w/3 inch foam wrapped in batting. it looks ALOT less homemade…which was key for me trying to have a “grown up” bedroom;)
it’s easy though! i can’t wait to see!

Love your headboard ideas. Prints make all the difference, don’t you think? I had to tell you I just finished a “J” diary book, using a J card from Oblation Press. I was in Portland a few weeks ago and picked up 2, then found a pack of 6 at my local book arts center last week! I’m stocked up now. This is definately a project I’ll revisit a few times a year. A great one to get pictures printed for and use papers I love at the moment. Thanks again for a fantastic class!

Ooh, we have been planning this for a while but not got round to it, so I’ll be watching with interest 🙂
Our bed is up against a white-washed brick wall which looks great but is pretty cold in winter so I really need to stop procrastinating and get it done!

thanks for the link! I think mine will be a bit thicker – going to use foam padding underneath the fabric, but yes – general idea! and I love that blog, thanks for sharing!!

I love your headboard idea and how well it turned out. I saw an idea of using an old wood door as a headboard so a couple of weeks ago my hubby and I stopped by The Green Project in New Orleans and they have isles of doors. All kinds of doors. We found one we loved and are going to use it as a headboard. I can’t decide if I want to paint it or leave it as is, it’s grey right now and wood on the other side. I’m loving the gray.
I also found an old wooden shutter with just the right amount of paint missing and I’m going to use it as a shelf over my art area.
    You make the greatest things.
