Shehejuly

They made it through his first rotation.

Lots of long days.

And a bunch of over night calls.

She realized that on the nights he's on call, "dinner" is peanut butter on a spoon and some cereal.

No good.

He's enjoying being a doctor though.

The patient interaction is interesting & challenging.

The monitoring two cell phones is lame & challenging.

And let's be honest, the work phone rings waaay too often.

And let's be more honest, "too often" means "in the middle of the night."

Her productivity is way down.

And even without the night phone calls, she's not sleeping.

But that usually means a new idea is on the way.

So in general, morale is high for E & P.

They even managed to get out for two date nights.

AND!

They are both bike riders!

It's awesome!

And they still have just the one car.

They'd like to stick with one car forever.

But something tells them once their kids have to go to soccer cheer practice a second car (but not a minivan) might be in order.

They are very serious about settling down in San Diego for the rest of their days.

She's hoping they never have to leave their two bedroom apartment in downtown.

Check back in July 2011 to see how well that plan worked out.

Never a minivan…I drive a black Suburban and it is so much more respected by other motorists than a minivan. Sure, it eats gas, but it is safe, big and unstoppable.
I WILL NEVER DRIVE A MINIVAN. EVER.

We also have one car in SD and it’s been tough, but we didn’t plan ahead as well and move to a walkable neighborhood. Our lease is up soon and we plan to remedy that — and get bikes, too.

How did you take that picture and the picture of you and your dh on the hiking expedition, friend, tripod, someone on the street. Just curious!
Really like your kitchen, I like the contrast of the dark cabinets with the lighter wood floor. Looks like the counter top is how it is all tied together.

I set the timer for 10 seconds and put the camera on a fence post and then ran to join Paul. Thats pretty usual around here. I never ask people to take a photo because Im never happy with the framing – ha! thank you!

We SO should/could be a one-car family. But it’s nice to have the two cars with having the baby….
Great picture! I started doing this same wrap-up of our months…but it’s a bit more difficult with having two Hes (hubby and baby). BUT it’s fun! Love how you do it!

I have pictures from this past weekend taken by a well-meaning stranger, and I (sadly) don’t like the composition either. More timer and run shots in my future as well.

My husband and I have always only had one car. We bike most places and now have four kids so a larger vehicle was necessary. We are committed to cutting our carbon footprint so a mini van was the route to go to be able to haul six people + gear. I don’t really understand why/when mini vans became so uncool – I guess it depends on who you are trying to impress. We base all of our purchases on functionality, necessity, cost-cutting and trying to be green.

I am feeling a strong need to defend the mini van. I don’t now, nor will I ever feel the need to be too cool for a mini van. I am a mom, I have three kids, they have friends, my mini van has 7 seats and easy access doors fit our budget and is better on gas than an SUV. It fits my life right now. It does not make me less of a person because I want to make room for friends, I think it makes me a fun Mom. When it was just me, I had a convertable, now I drive a mini van there is no shame in that.

love the sharing one car! we moved from the bay area to la and are surviving with one car for now… cross our fingers we’ll manage with one car until the minivan days are upon us, as well.

I’m glad you mentioned the one car thing. My boyfriend and I share a car and I always thought that was…differnt. We’ve never needed a second car, but lately I’ve been thinking we needed to get one, just becasue. This really reminded me that we DON’T HAVE to have a 2nd car. Thanks, Elise!

This post makes me happy. Glad you guys made it through your first rotation month AND managed to go out on some dates. (and strike something off your list, no doubt!)
I think it’s a super goal to stick with one car, especially if you live in a city. It’s a really great stance in general, and for the earth. Love the posts! I do hope you keep them up for as long as you can.
    Happy Tuesday! 🙂

    Elise!
I think one car is a great idea. Dan and I lasted about 1.5 years with that plan. We live in an incredibly awesome neighbourhood for walking… but an incredibly not-awesome climate for walking in the winter. Especially not with tots. I have a Honda Pilot that is literally a super hero Transformer. It seats up to 8 and 4 of those can be carseats. On our latest road trip I had two dogs, two toddlers, $4000 worth of IKEA goods, a bathroom vanity, a double stroller, a dog kennel, 4 months worth of clothing for myself and my toddlers AND ONE ARCHITECT. And I used the same amount of gas as our CRV.
I love that you have peanut butter for dinner, too!
xoxo – we goventure again soon!

Love the she & he monthly wrap-ups. It will be quite fun to read them again once a few months/years have passed.
I like the simplicity of it, because it feels like real life. Very inspiring !
We make it with one car as well here, and though it is sometimes a tiny bit frustrating, I wouldn’t change it. I hope we can keep it to just one as long as possible. So, on car-less days, I have my feet, and that’s awesome !

Aww you look so happy 🙂 By the way what’s a minivan? I take it it is something different from what we call a minivan in the UK?! That’s like a MiniCooper but a van version – tiny!

I’m thinking it’s what we call a ‘People Carrier’ in the UK. Like all things concerning kids, the reality always turns out to be different than your intentions 🙂
