Paul and I have adopted a family of geese.
Except now two of the babies are missing.
(I should be clear that we are technically not responsible for their well-being. We are, however, very interested them and spend a lot of time observing and discussing them. They have become our pets that we do not have to feed, walk, water, or bathe. The Pet Rock of the 21st century.)
The geese live in the grassy lot that is next to our apartment. They have their own little woodsy environment there – complete with a lake giant puddle. Normally we can spot them eating and swimming around.
Yesterday, we saw a fox try to attack them.
Seriously.
The Papa Goose noticed the fox hiding in the tall grass and alerted the rest of the clan. As a little family unit, they waddled quickly up a big grassy hill. The fox, who probably is the reason there are now four goslings instead of six, just waited and watched.
We too waited and watched until it looked like the geese were far enough away that they would be safe for a little while.
It was right about then that I realized I should have bought a HD video camera. The Planet Earth folks would have fallen all over themselves to get this footage.
