I have never really lived in a city that generated a lot of tourist action.
I mean there was St. Paul, Minnesota in the pre-MOA days. A.K.A. the frozen tundra. A.K.A. the place where the jacket is actually required for survival.
And then there was Santa Rosa, which, to be honest, should be the most flocked to city in the entire world. Unfortunately, it is not. Perhaps marketing is to blame?
Next came Sactown, Holler back town. Obviously, the slogan is strong, but again…extreme temperatures and lack of excitingness keep it off the main tourist loop.
You might be thinking, "Wait, didn’t you live in LA?" And to that I say, "No. I lived in South Central, Los Angeles." A tourist destination for high school seniors and their parents who are looking at colleges. I only went into the "L.A." part in order to shop. Or get cupcakes. Or to attend a sorority event that might have well been at the 9-0.
But Washington DC…well…it is the place to be. Especially if you are seeking information about the founding fathers. Or about history. Or about the government. Or if you just really like cherry blossoms.
This week and probably for the next couple weeks my town will be filled with people who are lost. People with maps. People with cameras. People who are taking it all in.
To these people I say…"Enjoy it." And also, "when entering a metro station, please, please stand only on the right side of the escalator."
