Probably the very last thing I expected from the internship was friends. But I found two of ’em. And they are hilarious. Katie & Betty. My partners, confidants and comic relief. We are so different but get along so well. And they know all my secrets. Nine hour days get pretty long unless you are telling secrets.
And on the job front — It is a tennis match. Or better yet, a boxing match. "In this corner, Elise works for Target." "In the other corner, Elise doesn’t." And everyday the two boxers battle and battle. And I am supposed to be the referee, but really I am just the girl who went to get popcorn and is missing the fight. I am the girl who cannot remember which boxer is which.
But it is like this: Target Rocks. As in Best Company Ever. As in I really want to work for them. As in I need to. Yet, I do not think that the right position for me is In-Store. It is at Headquarters. But I talked to a recruiter yesterday and she said that they may be able to accommodate me. I just have to interview. And then we will discuss options. Which is scary in itself. Discussing options seems very serious. It means making decisions, not eating popcorn.
And on a completely different note — I finished A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby. It is about four people who meet for the first time on a rooftop on New Year’s Eve. They are all there because they were planning to commit suicide. But then they start to talk and form a bond. And they keep going with life. That is the short of it. The long of it involves much more contemplation and fights with themselves and each other. Overall…I was a fan. I was extremely impressed with Hornby’s ability to get inside the head of the four characters. Each character told their own story in a completely different style. And there was a ton of dialogue. Which I think is hard to write. So I appreciated that.
I did not really see the book to be uplifting. Or depressing. It seemed a lot like Kristen’s senior quote in the yearbook: "In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: It goes on."
And so it does. Oh my.
