Fanscinated by the idea that companies have information that allows them to target me as a consumer. Like amazon.com. They knew to email me when Jack Johnson released his Curious George CD. They knew I would care when Sophie Kinsella came out with a new book.
Learned today in Personal Selling that the data collection concept is just a part of Customer Relationship Management. Which is essentially: "letting the customer know that they are the most important person for the company." It involves calling the customer by name. It involves paying attention to buying patterns so you can anticipate what else they may be interested in. It can get pretty intense. And it all falls back on data. On information.
In addition to putting information out into the world, I constantly take it in. Some I do not retain. But the important stuff gets filed away. It becomes part of my knowledge base that helps me to understand ideas, situations, people. I collect data that will hopefully help me to interact. To listen. To understand. To form stronger relationships. To make those in my life know that who they are and what they say is important to me. It is more than trivia. It is data.
